Exit Lyrics - U2
Review The Song (8)
You know he got the cure
You know he went astray
He used to stay awake
To drive the dreams he had away.
He wanted to believe
In the hands of love.
His head it felt heavy
As he came across the land
A dog started cryin'
Like a broken-hearted man
At the howling wind
At the howling wind.
He went deeper into black
Deeper into white.
He could see the stars shine
Like nails in the night.
He felt the healing
Healing, healing, healing hands of love
Like the stars shiny, shiny from above.
A hand in the pocket
Fingering the steel
The pistol weighed heavy
His heart he could feel was beating, beating
Beating, beating, beating
Oh my love, oh my love,
Oh my love, oh my love.
Oh my love...
So hands that build
Can also pull down
The hands of love.

I believe throughout the late 70's 80's and 90's up to today the fellows have been trying to grasp such things as life spirituality (not to be mistaken for holier than thou religion). Especially with such songs as exit and running to stand still they are trying to explore certain "demons" that they themselves have not experienced. Running to standstill is about herione addicts and from what I understand exit is about murder.

I was asked to connect lyrics from a song to each act of "Romeo & Juliet". I think that this song goes well with the last act as this song pictures suicide "fingering the steel" (of a gun). It could have a different meaning to others but that part I think is about suicide.
Amazing | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/3/10
I believe this song shows the potential of rock itself to trap not only the deepest of the human emotions but the quintessence of our soul. It reaches me like a river flowing through my heart... simply perfect.
Haunting. | Reviewer: Laura | 4/25/10
I think that being a U2 fan, The Jousha Tree delievers an element in Rock 'N Roll that no one has been able to capture and Exit is one of those songs that capture the moment you hear Adam's bass lines and then you're introduced to Bono's voice in a very rasp way I've never really heard him sing. The drums were perfect and The Edge really just braught this really haunting effect that makes you think and really sinks you in while you're lisiting. Splendid Work.
ridiculous | Reviewer: newlyu2ed | 7/12/09
This song, I think, encompasses all the requirements of rock 'n roll legend and soul. The complete slowing down to the manic craze of the music does to your mind and heart what a several million dollar movie scene could never do. In the rattle and hum version of this song, the guitar strum that begins right after "So the hands that build/Can also bring down," etches an entire tale and experience (of the song's muse) in my head. ridiculous, simply ridiculous.
desperation | Reviewer: weldr | 5/8/09
The power of the music and the rising and falling desperation of the vocals gives me a background for the gunslinger, Roland of Stephen King's Dark Tower series. If a movie were made of the Dark Tower, I feel that this song must be included. Especially during the "Drawing of the Three" segment.
Amazing song about a hard subject ! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/5/08
This song is one of the best U2 songs !! The lyrics are hard, painfull, but in many cases true. The power in this song, is that it tells a story by lyric and instrument. Larry slams his drums, like shots out of a gun, and if you listen close, you can hear a heartbeat that pounds very fast, and gets slower and slower, until it stops. Amazing work from Adam !
A dark picture | Reviewer: K | 6/21/06
A song from a time when U2 was more sentiment than flamboyance. I can feel into this song, it gives you that sensation of being trapped, and although the lyrics are very straighforward in what they want to communicate, I feel it's simplicity what makes this song work so well.
