He had alot to say.
He had alot of nothing to say.
We'll miss him.
I'll miss him.
He had alot to say.
He had alot of nothing to say.
We'll miss him.
I'll miss him.
We're gonna miss him
We're gonna miss him
So long.
We wish you well.
You told us how you weren't afraid to die.
Well then, so long.
Don't cry.
Or feel too down.
Not all martyrs see divinity.
But at least you tried.
Standing above the crowd,
He had a voice that was strong and loud.
We'll miss him.
We'll miss him.
Ranting and pointing his finger
At everything but his heart.
We'll miss him.
We'll miss him.
We're gonna miss him.
We're gonna miss him.
No way to recall
What it was that you had said to me,
Like I care at all.
But you were so loud.
You sure could yell.
You took a stand on every little thing
And so loud.
You could be the one who saves me from my own existance.
"I'm too smart when you're invisible by the bone and the symbol on you. So he bashes his skull through the window while over looking the sea. Twilight amber ego. We were amused by this"
Standing above the crowd,
He had a voice that was strong and loud and I
Swallowed his facade cuz I'm so
Eager to identify with
Someone above the ground,
Someone who seemed to feel the same,
Someone prepared to lead the way, and
Someone who would die for me.
Will you? Will you now?
Would you die for me?
Don't you fuckin lie.
Don't you step out of line.
Don't you step out of line.
Don't you step out of line.
Don't you fuckin lie.
You've claimed all this time that you would die for me.
Why then are you so surprised when you hear your own
eulogy?
He had alot to say.
He had alot of nothing to say.
He had alot to say.
He had alot of nothing to say.
Come down.
get off your fuckin cross.
We need the fuckin space to nail the next fool martyr.
To ascend you must die.
You must be crucified
For our sins and our lies.
Goodbye!!!

Review about Eulogy righteous! | Reviewer: Shane | 11/30/09
I think this song is about a charismatic self-righteous ass motherfucker...a wise-guy if you will. Someone who is somewhat of a know it all and what might be considered overly opinionated. Its about all the people who follow this person, happy that they finally have something to believe in and the dissapointment they feel when the guy doesn't deliver whole heartedly for whatever reason. And he looked so good on paper, I just don't understand why he couldn't practice what he preached.
And then in the end, life goes on because no one person can carry the weight of an entire human race no matter how noble their cause.
I like how the picture is painted of a character full of self-righteousness and answers. But isn't it kind of self-righteous to do so in such a sarcastic manner? Maybe I'm the wise guy asshole who thinks he has all the answers by observing this guy as douche bag, thinking his philosophies are inferior to mine.
Generalization | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/29/09
I could be wrong, but I have a feeling its another song about his mother. I know it says he but that makes no difference. Look, he has displayed both love and anger toward his mother in other songs. She has been a major inspiration for him (i.e 10,000 Days(wings 2), Jambi, and Judith in A Perfect Circle). I'm sure there are a lot more dedicated to her.
We need the wood | Reviewer: anewpairofeyes | 11/10/09
There is an obvious poke at religion here, but to reduce this song down just to a criticism on religion is missing the deeper point.
"Get off the cross, we need the wood" is a very common saying within 12 step recovery programs.
Within alcoholic family systems, there is often one person who plays the role of the hero, and this hero role more often than not doesn't actually help the situation improve. It just feeds the hero's self sense of being a martyr that is suffering for the cause.
This goes hand and hand with the lyric, "Learn to swim" from the song Aenima which is on the same album.
When I hear, "learn to swim" I interpret this as meaning, "learn to save your own damn self."
Those who have a desire to suffer for the mindless masses will be given endless opportunity to do so.
TO ALL CHRISTIANS | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/26/09
just thought i would add a little note to all the 'wishful thinking' god botherers. the song is clearly about the relationship maynard had with some won in his youth. it is also about the effect of 'God' or 'Jesus', which by the way ARE FICTIONAL CHARACTERS FROM A BOOK! hes saying that even though he was taught to believe all these things, he new the teacher was not honest, and how could he be when he didn't know the truth himself. The bible isn't proven, it's not even believable but the messages are good. Maynard is relating his personal experience(with maybe his father, who knows?) with the life we all live and the effects Christianity has on everyone. How do we know Jesus (if this person exists) was happy with what he was doing, if he really believed in it all? He did have a lot of nothing to say, so did maynards teacher. Jesus said in death there is life.... Prove it?? at which point do u become divine when u die, maynard sees the fault in this and even says "ranting and pointing his finger, everywhere but his heart. Did he know what he was doing was right? Are the Sep 11 Bombers martyrs? Are they 'devine' or in 'heaven'? There religion says they are. stupid you say? YOU ARE INTOLERANT! It is no worse.
Is the world a better place now because of Jesus? i say NO. but in the time he was supposedly living and showing people "the truth" his messages probably would have done a lot of good. The problem was people in the church back then became powerful and started to control the world in the way that they saw fit. At which point did the church prove its story? Romans believed in gods way before the christian church was around? Maynard states in the song; "He had a voice that was strong and loud and I
Swallowed his facade cuz I'm so
Eager to identify with
Someone above the ground,
Someone who seemed to feel the same,
Someone prepared to lead the way, and
Someone who would die for me."
this is the same then as it is now, people need something to believe in, its programmed into the human brain, if we didn't believe in something we would not get up in the morning because the risk of sudden death when opening the front door or driving to work would be to great. That mixed with the fact Christianity is drummed into us from an early age (T.V, parents, church, massive billboards) and taught at school (funnily enough run by the government) makes it extremely easy to believe and hold on to most of our lives. At least now the youth of today have more of a choice to see whats REAL. Finally jesus said he would die for us, "Would you die for me?" to save us all from our sins, Explain to me how we are saved please Christians please, please explain to me because look at the state of this world we are all saved in. ITS RUINED. war, poverty, hatred, EVEN PRIESTS RAPING CHILDREN. Monsoons, earthquakes all of which killing people who probably did nothing to directly deserve it. Is this Saved? To enter the divine heaven we must first have to die, matter cannot be created or destroyed only changed. Heaven is wishful thinking a good way of controlling people and pushing the actions of poeple in the world for a certain purpose. Funny, i dont remember seeing anything about money in the bible, why does the church of england need it so much now, dont they only teach the christian religion? Or do they want to brainwash and force us?
To ascend you must die.
You must be crucified
For our sins and our lies.
Goodbye!!!
TOOL ROCKS! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/11/09
with all the reviews i would just like to say that this song have blown my mind and the lyrics can mean whatever the fuck you want them to mean but as soon as you judge this song just think of the song being about you, and who put you in that position?...

The song is about his hypocritical step dad from youth who had very strong Christian views and obviously preached and pushed this on maynard. It was a very stifling situation for him I read. Also, I think he calls his stepdad a martyr probably because he said something very "selfless" and "for the greater good" to make himself feel like a good Christian but he didn't honestly believe in his own words. I'm really not sure who did it, but I know there's rumour that maynard was molested as a child and I'm betting it was the same guy he's talking about here.
maybe | Reviewer: chris | 9/3/09
maybe the song is about us? argueing about its meaning. feeling somewhat higher than the writer and feeling like we know what its all about. since every human thinks he knows the answer to everything and is alot better than anyone else.
...just an idea
This is obviously anti-god | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/29/09
if its not against God then why even mention the line "come down get off your fucking cross weneed the fucking space to nail the next fool martyr" there is no way yo can say something like that and say its not against Christianity and he did the same thing in Opiate when he called Jesus a liar and said "satan" 5 times. now i like tool's music its very inspirational but Maynard can will burn in hell unless some serious repentance is done and no one can call themselves Christian or even Pro God after saying that line. in 10000 Days he calls people hypocrites well he is the biggest one himself. and the line "ranting and pointing his finger, at everything but his heart is Maynard saying that Jesus was pointing out what was immoral and wrong and he wasn't seeing what was wrong with himself. In other words maynard was saying that Jesus was a hypocrite himself which is obviously anti-god
It's all a play on words | Reviewer: The Meaningless | 7/13/09
Sure, this song may make many refrences to 'christianity' but in all honesty, if anyone who gave a damn knew about this song, Tool would be in deep shit...
But I don't see it as a shot to 'god' and such, they're just using the cross and crucifixion as a metaphor against the people that try to take the blame for everything that goes wrong....
The song name being 'Eulogy' referring to someone dead... Meaning the endless speeches about 'It's all my fault'...'If I had've said...'
(on and on...)
i interpret this song with simplicity, i just think it relates to daily life, it can easily be dedicated to someone who you cant no longer bear anymore. a subtle way of saying: get the fuck out of my life!
anyway, i believe in the richness of multilple interpretations of something, it proves its value as culture.
