Empire State of Mind Lyrics - Jay-Z

Review The Song (15)

Yeah
Yeah I'm out that Brooklyn, now I'm down in Tribeca
Right next to Deniro, but I'll be hood forever
I'm the new Sinatra, and since I made it here
I can make it anywhere, yeah they love me everywhere
I used to cop in Harlem, all of my Dominicano's
Right there up on Broadway, pull me back to that McDonald's
Took it to my stashbox, 560 State Strett
Catch me in the kitchen like a Simmons with them pastries
Cruisin' down 8th Street, off white Lexus
Drivin' so slow, but BK is from Texas
Me, I'm out that Bed-Stuy, home of that boy Biggie
Now I live on billboard and I brought my boys with me
Say whatup to Ty-Ty, still sippin' mai tai's
Sittin' courtside, Knicks & Nets give me high five
Nigga I be Spike'd out, I could trip a referee
sponsored links
Tell by my attitude that I'm most definitely from...

New York
Concrete jungle where dreams are made of
There's nothin' you can't do
Now you're in New York
These streets will make you feel brand new
Big lights will inspire you
Let's hear it for New York, New York,
New York

Catch me at the X with OG at a Yankee game
Shit, I made the Yankee hat more famous then a Yankee can
You should know I bleed blue, but I ain't a Crip though
But I got a gang of Niggas walkin' with my clique though
Welcome to the melting pot, corners where we sellin' rock
Africa Bambata shit, home of the hip-hop
Yellow cab, gypsy cab, dollar cab, holla back
For foreigners it ain't for they act like they forgot how to act
Eight million stories, out there in it naked
City is a pity, half of y'all won't make it
Me, I got a plug, Special Ed "I Got It Made"
If Jesus payin' Lebron, I'm payin' Dwayne Wade
Three dice cee-lo, three card molly
Labour Day Parade, rest in peace Bob Marley
Statue of Liberty, long live the World Trade
Long live the Kingdome, I'm from the Empire St. that's

New York
Concrete jungle where dreams are made of
There's nothin' you can't do
Now you're in New York
These streets will make you feel brand new
Big lights will inspire you
Let's hear it for New York, New York,
New York

Lights is blinding, girls need blinders
So they can step out of bounds quick
The sidelines is, lined with casualties, who sip to life casually
Then gradually become worse, don't bite the apple leaf
Caught up in the in-crowd, now you're in style
End of the winter gets cold, en vogue, with your skin out
City of sin, it's a pity on the wind
Good girls gone bad, the city's filled with them
Mommy took a bus trip, now she got her bust out
Everybody ride her, just like a bus route
Hail Mary to the city, you're a virgin
And Jesus can't save you, life starts when the church end
Came here for school, graduated to the high life
Ball players, rap stars, addicted to the limelight
MDMA got you feelin' like a champion
The city never sleeps, better slip you an Ambien

New York
Concrete jungle where dreams are made of
There's nothin' you can't do
Now you're in New York
These streets will make you feel brand new
Big lights will inspire you
Let's hear it for New York, New York,
New York

One hand in the air for the big city
Streetlights, big dreams, all lookin' pretty
No place in the world that could compare
Put your lighters in the air
Everybody say "Yeah, Yeah. Yeah, Yeah"

New York
Concrete jungle where dreams are made of
There's nothin' you can't do
Now you're in New York
These streets will make you feel brand new
Big lights will inspire you
Let's hear it for New York, New York,
New York

if Jesus payin' Lebron, I'm payin' Dwayne Wade - not jesus but JEEZY - it refers to jeezys song "23-24" Jeezy uses the players (kobe, Lebron)numbers to articulate the price he’s paying of a kilogram of cocaine. hova suggests that, while Jeezy may be paying $23,000, Jay-Z is paying a mere $3000 (expressed as Dwyane Wade’s jersey number)

excellent song | Reviewer: jim | 3/23/10

Jay-Z is aloud | Reviewer: evangaga | 3/16/10

god people leave him alone this is obviously a peice of art this song and for the record i enjoy it very much! Aleasha does add a sense of inocence to this song if you think about it and i belive it was a smart thing to do by having her sing. both of them did a great job.

A few things | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/14/10

1. Jay-Z, as a human being, has the right to say whatever he wants to say in his music.
2. But, that doesn't mean everyone has to be ok with it. I don't like what he says at all. I am a Christian. Jesus is nothing to play with, so I do take it seriously when things like "Jesus can't save you" are being said.
3. Nowhere in the Bible does it say you have to save yourself. It says you have to choose salvation for yourself. Jesus CAN save you - but only if YOU CHOOSE to be saved.
4. To all who assume every Christian is a radical "Bible Thumper", you shouldn't be so close-minded. At least take the time to properly understand what's being discussed and don't assume that because someone has an opposing view, they are trying to put you down. It's not the case. Just because a Christian person points out how something offends them doesn't mean they're intending to slap you in the face with a Bible. Just as atheists have the right to bash God (and that doesn't mean that all atheists bash God), Christians have the right to defend Him.
5. It's not "just music". Would you let your young children listen to music that praises gang behavior, violence, degredation, etc.? Everything has a message, good or bad. Whether you realize it or not, you take those things in by constantly exposing yourself to them. That doesn't mean you should never listen to music or watch tv. It just means you should be aware of what you're taking in and use your good judgment to filter out negative influences.
I could go on, but I just think everyone needs to learn to LISTEN to each other before jumping to conlcusions. Discussion is how we progress.

Another War | Reviewer: Papi Chulo | 2/10/10

2 topics:

Freedom of Speech allows you to speak/comment on anything, so the fact that Jesus/God is mentioned on this song doesn't mean that Jay-z shouldn't be allowed, I mean songs have covered every single topic in good and bad ways before. Some of the great wars from the past have been based on the biggest stupidity:RELIGION and at this point in time we still have you trying to go on one more time.

Second: Jay-Z chose to sing the song with Alicia Keys for a reason, to make the song better, so for those who say that if she wasnt there the song would have been shit, you are actually wrong, the song was always thought to be for them. Singing it by himself wasn't an option.

2) In the bible Jesus says repeatedly that you must save yourself and this is what Jay-z is talking about.

I've never seen this in the Bible. I agree people shouldn't expect Jay-Z to promote Christianity!

reality check for new york | Reviewer: FordPrefect42 | 1/13/10

There are a few issues on Jay-z's end in this song like:
Forced Rhymes
and a lack of metephor
Alicia is (as always) flawless. Eventhough there are some technical problems with this song you are missing the point of it. Jay-z is purposly being literal with this because in new york, you see metephors for life everywhere. He didn't need to add his own. This isn't a song, it is a story, a manifesto. This is the real new york, a place where the filthy rich and the dirt poor occupy the same space.

About his reference to God/jesus I have a few things to say:
1) I hate to be the one to brake to you christians but almost every talented artist is/was an atheist, I do not know if Jay-z is but you need to get over yourself. Most big names are not christian.
2) In the bible Jesus says repeatedly that you must save yourself and this is what Jay-z is talking about. He is referening the fact that you will see prostitutes and gangbangers and drug dealers in a pew every sunday and out on the courner monday through saturday. He is saying that asking forgiveness alone will not make you a better person.
3) as for the thumpers out there (the people who believe "if you don't have anything nice to say [about religion] don't say anything at all.)
Most art is sacreligious it is the nature of art to attack societal norms and religion is one of the biggest. For the people who think that Jay-z should not be allowed to talk like that because he has such a wide auidence. You need to understand that that is exactly why Jay-z and alicia say these things, because people listen to them but even if no one listened they would still express themselves. Sorry but no one will ever be banned from speaking ill of the church, at least in this country. But if that's what you really want feel free to move to Italy Ireland or Iran. In fact I'll help you pack.

Poor | Reviewer: Well | 1/9/10

The lyrics for this song are some of the mindless I've seen in...well, who I am I kidding, worse shit comes out every week. But what really gets to me is the chorus; it's one of the most annoying things I've ever heard! Alicia Keyes' voice is like fingernails on a chalkboard.

Nice Commetns | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/6/10

This song never relates to insult diss christianity.. Carefully look at the listen and you will understand the trend of the lyrics... Just be a little creative.. and dont be disappointed. So what will you say about those vampire movies who condemn God here and there.. THIS IS A SONG..LONG LIVE HOV.. LONG LIVE HIP HOP AND MUSIC. AGAIN DONT BE DISAPPOINTED

you dont get it. | Reviewer: m. | 12/27/09

this song is amazing. i think anyone who is proud of where they came from can love and relate to the song, even if you're not from new york.

as for jay-z's reference to god: nobody should be looking to a rap song for spiritual guidance.
