The seeds of ELP were sown in 1969, when both The Nice
(which featured Keith Emerson on keyboards) and King
Crimson (which featured Greg Lake on bass and vocals) did a
few shows together. Both bands had been at the forefront of
the British rock scene.
The Nice had enjoyed several hits, but were known more for
its wild stage show that was a showcase for Keith Emerson,
who had been tagged a keyboard wizard and "the Jimi Hendrix
of the Hammond organ." They were just beginning to build a
huge following in the United States. King Crimson, had
exploded out of nowhere in 1969. Moving, in a matter of a
couple of months, from club obscurity to big stars. The
band's debut LP, IN THE COURT OF THE CRIMSON KING, had
become an instant smash and established the band in the UK More...
Review about Emerson, Lake & Palmer Hard to pick ELPs best, but can't go wrong here | Reviewer: Gary
------ About the song Tarkus performed by Emerson, Lake & Palmer
The album version is definitive. I'm trying to memorize it all so I can play it in my head note for note. I don't play an instrument. If you can, download a torrent or trade for one of the live versions. Boston 12/73 is my fav. Jersey City 8/73 quality is not as good, but at 40 minutes, it's worth having and enjoying. Keith wears his Tarkus medallion 24x7. Guess that tells you that he thinks of this work as his masterpiece. Bummer he had to cancel his tour due to recurring hand problems.
A Three Part Symphonic Masterpiece | Reviewer: Karl Kotas
------ About the song Tarkus performed by Emerson, Lake & Palmer
Tarkus is truly a masterpiece of modern symphonic rock. It's uncool to like it now, but let's face it... it's opera, theater, comic books, poetry, drama, mythology, jazz and heavy cosmic symphonic synthesizer rock n roll all put together. Someday, this will be discovered by a new generation who will expand on these themes and the music will be incredible!
I met ELP one very busy and hot afternoon summer, the first song I listened, was C'est la vie, Greg voice, enchanted me, as well as Emersons performance, I was 24. When I decided to find out more about them, I could never again, stopped listening to them, they are the joy of my life, LONG LIFE TO THE KINGS!! Pass my days, praying for their return to Buenos Aires, Argentina, my country of origin, or Tokyo, Japan, where I do live, sometimes. Biggest kiss, to Greg, Keith and Carl, and all ELP fans, they surely know, as I do, what it best!!! The Best!. Kisses from Argentina.

Although I love the original album version..the one I really love, is the live one Greg Lake and I think all of ELP with the Royal Canadian Orchestra..it is vocally superb, with great Lake 12 string but phenomenal strings and real orchestration by Canadian Orchestra and I think then Emerson on authentic keyboard parts...tough version to find..think my one buddy still has it on lp...will try to find,,great tune like many of theirs like Lucky Man and another favorite of mine, Still YOu Turn Me ON...

------ About the song Trilogy performed by Emerson, Lake & Palmer
Hey. I'm 14 and love ELP. Stereotyping does not only extend to race and religion, but also to age. My music interests exted to Hendrix, Zeppelin, Floyd, and tons of artists that are just that: artists. So, I'd appriciate it if you laid off of the under 20 generation, because we'll be taking care of you when you're too old to get up and crap in a toilet.
Thanks.

------ About the song Tarkus performed by Emerson, Lake & Palmer
I listened to ELP from the first album on in the 70's. ELP was my favorite group when I was in my 20's. I am now in my 60's and have re-discovered and remembered how much ELP moved me. Tarkus is mind blowing and still moves me as much as it did then. The progressive rock they produced was fabulous. What a great sound.

------ About the song Tarkus performed by Emerson, Lake & Palmer
I'm now 36 and I love this song just as much I did (or maybe more -- not sure..) when I was 14. Nothing nostalgic here. It's just the timelessness of the piece...Man, I'm proud of my taste when I was 14 year old.
Ironic thing is that many of my disco "buddies" think I don't know much about 70's music. I tell them about ELP and others to no avail as to me, what made the 70's worth anything (music-wise) was progressive rock. Well such is life...

As a fan of this song I'd like to mention that Jordan Rudess has made a cover of Tarkus and it's on his 2007 album "The Road Home". It sounds perfect. And even though it's a cover it doesn't lack emotion and definitely not musicianship. Check it out if you like this song.

well i am 17 going on 18 and i have been into ELP and all the great prog, hard rock, and countless early sub genres of rock n roll since i was 10 or 11... well do you mean to tell me that i am the only kid that appreciates a good thing when i hear it? i mean i listen to more metal and electronic music... nuthin to mainstream most of the time... but is this the truth that this whole generation of lame ass kids hasnt been taught to appreciate a good piece of art?

------ About the song Tarkus performed by Emerson, Lake & Palmer
Electric symphonic music is paralleled by no other. The music of these guys and yes need to be more heard by the general public. What this music really is is modern symphonies. These songs also require a large amount of muicianship. I know, I am a muscian. More people just need to sit down and let music take them though the less-seen spaces of their minds.

------ About the song Lucky Man performed by Emerson, Lake & Palmer
I was playing a full G chord on the guitar and having not heard the song for a long time I went to the d chord with the added f# on the sixth string with the thumb, which is a no-no whith the fret hand, but it's required for the song, the full G and the D are the chords that would be used on the four verses. Then the A minor and the full G then the D with the added F# on the sixth string.
1 G full / D

!!!! 1 2 1 2 1 2 1 2 that's it but I still haven't heard the song in a long time and my voice sounded a heck of a lot like Lake's
I was making a new song with my acoustic guitar and it turned out to be Lucky Man. ooooh how lucky?!!!
the chords go full straight through on the guitar. as for the keyboards you need or should get an an1x...but that would be bad, they aren't made any longer. Bad make of keyboard, it had the voice called "Lucky" built right in the factory voices. Although it was authentic, the bass note on the keyboard doesn't cut it. It has to be doubled with an octave and doesn't work correctly. I'm not sure what the Motif by yamaha has to offer I'm goin vsti these days. Oh yeah if you're wondering why I explained that...it's because Keith Emerson is the best synth user in the world and I don't think he uses anything close to yamaha or casio. hm. analog is the road to travel with those days. 2007 peeps can't wait for my next song, I wonder what that'll be!

------ About the song Take A Pebble performed by Emerson, Lake & Palmer
This song is out of this world. If you listen hard enough in the middle of the song, you will hear a pebble dropping on a puddle of water. I think it is where you hear Lake playing his guitar softly before they start clapping.
Anyways, this song is truely inspirational.

Love the lyrics to this song. Is it new?! Has it been recorded by Emerson, Lake & Palmer? Are they touring this year and are they singing the song, I hope!!!

This whole song, not just the final impression is one of if not the most intense song I've ever had the pleasure of listening to! For car audiophiles the 3rd impression just before 2 min. is a very good bass test, it popped the mirror off my dodge daytona with just 600 watts and two MTX thunder 3000s in a sealed box, a few years ago. Please have anyone who loves music listen to this "symphony" or "rock opera"they will appreciate the intensity and relevance of the story, and music In my opinion E.L.P. are one of the best groups of our the last century, comparable in their work anachronisticly with Mozart and Beethovan.
