Elbow Lyrics

Or Who Are You - And What Have You Done With Elbow?

A lot of bands come roaring out of the blocks full of
youthful passion and claiming to be in it 'for the long
haul'.
They make a great debut album and then stall or run out of
gas. elbow have done it the other way round. Not that
they're exactly the Buena Vista Social Club of rock'n'roll.
But it took them ten years to write their Mercury
shortlisted debut album, “Asleep In The Back”.

Now on new LP, “Cast of Thousands” and with a weight of
experience behind them that is surely unique More...

------ About the song Grounds For Divorce performed by Elbow

I think a lot of the lyrics are simply painting a picture e.g. badly-sung karaoke at a local/nearby bar; some guys are playing poker; "to a chorus of supposes from the little town whores": local ladettes speculating as to which guys are loaded, perhaps also as to who is well-endowed. "A Chinese cigarette-case, and the rest you can keep": the cigarette-case is the one thing he wants in a divorce settlement; or alternatively "the rest you can keep" is cigarettes he means to stop smoking. As the flowers denote, this is a man who means well though he can't resolve his pub-going habit with his marriage. Hence however, "Polishing a compass that I hold in my sleep" might refer to his difficulty in resolving his direction between going down the local drinking-hole(s) and keeping his marriage together.

------ About the song Lippy Kids performed by Elbow

...part of the point of being a kid is that you don't know better than to try and be cool and smoke some fags and drink some booze. And then you awake... and come down from the trees. You EVOLVE. And it's only then that you can think about rockets...

This song is so awesome. Not only is it beautiful to listen to, but the message is so true. Don't waste your golden years getting in trouble, smoking, stealing booze, hanging on the street corners...Build a Rocket Boys!!!!

------ About the song The Everthere performed by Elbow

This song has amazing lyrics, totally different take on a love song. Elbow is one of the few bands that consistently writes songs that have genuinely good lyrics. Love the line 'more salt than pepper in my hair' especially, probably because I only just really paid attention to this song and got what it meant.

------ About the song One Day Like This performed by Elbow

I agree, this is a masterpiece, without nearly the amount of recognition it deserves... I've never in my life heard a song that's so filled to the brim with happiness and hope. The music, the voice, the lyrics.. They all work together to create something truly magical. Shouldn't be ignored.

I first heard this at the warm up gig they did at 'The Junction'prior to the Build a rocket Boys tour and thought it was the most beautiful elbow song i had heard,it sent a tingle down my spine.I was 6 feet away from Guy who was enrapt in the song. They are in a league of their own, this is as haunting as Scattered Black and Whites.enough said

------ About the song One Day Like This performed by Elbow

Why has this track never been recognized for the masterpiece that it is.I,ve herd it used as a backing track for many things (children in need being the most recent) but not once being played in it,s full glory on any radio stations. The production on this track is nothing short of phenominal and the violin score is probably one of the, if not ,the best i,ve ever herd. Elbow should sack thier promoter as this track is a potential number one at any time of the year.

------ About the song Grounds For Divorce performed by Elbow

i guess that this song is talking about the bands friend bryan glancy, who died. his nickname was seldom seen kid. thats why mondays is for drinking to the seldom seen kid. and in the end they hope that when they die also, they'll be drinking together. and most of the lyrics talk about his lifestile: drinking in bars - (...working on a coctail called grounds for divirce, ...twisted karaokee at the aniseed lounge (aniseed is taking the bitter taste of absinthe away, grounds for divorce is a drink that is made of absinthe and midori)) and playing poker - (...There's this whispering of jokers doing flesh by the pound: poker) and prostitutes (...To a chorus of supposes from the little town whores) and so on.

------ About the song Grounds For Divorce performed by Elbow

I think St.Clipper is pretty spot on with that interpretation. Just one thing to add. 'Grounds for Divorce' is an actual drink consisting of one part Absinthe and one part Midori. So the line "There'll be twisted karaoke at the Aniseed lounge" may be referring to the actual drink, as Aniseed is one of the spices used to mask the bitter taste of absinthe.

Basically he's saying 'I'm gonna get bombed out of my mind on Absinthe and Midori, and maybe sing loudly and badly and madly.' Which goes along with the rest of that verse, and the entire song in general: I love you, but i'm gonna get drunk no matter what. I'll try to win you back, but 'it does you no good.'

------ About the song Grounds For Divorce performed by Elbow

I do not think the song is all about drinking, I think the Seldom Seen Kid which is what the friend died, yes.
On the other hand the song itself speaks of two things, drinking and divorce, she left him 'cause he spent his whole time in the bar:

I've been working on a cocktail called grounds for divorce: He is aware that he will be leaved becaus of his behavior

Doubt eat in on sticks But Then He kicks like a horse: the sticks could be as well high heels, doubt comes subtly, but it hits hard.

There's a Chinese cigarette case and the rest you can keep it: its his treasure, the rest does not matter, that the rest of the things will stay with her. (Separation of property) she can't take away what he likes the most.

To a chorus of supposed from the little town whores
She assumes that he is going with whores

There'll be twisted karaoke at the Aniseed lounge
No idea, but could be a fight with her

And I'll bring you feather roses ... etc: He will try to return later to her side, but will not be good.

That is one of several interpretations could be given to a song, isn't it?
