Echoplex Lyrics - Nine Inch Nails

Review The Song (2)

Nice and high and far apart
Just like they said
I built this place with broken parts
Just like they said
You chip away the old version of you
You'd be surprised at what you can do
I'm safe in here
Irrelevant
Just like they said

My voice just echoes off these walls

You feel me breathe
I am watching you
I see it all
The many ways you can't get to me
I see it all
I see the Hell you put yourself through

Oh the things I could do (if I wanted to)

My voice just echoes off these walls
My voice just echoes off these walls
I don't need anything at all
My voice just echoes off these walls

And I just slowly fade away

You will never ever get to me in here

It's not tragic, for once. | Reviewer: Ecnalubma | 6/21/11

The second-last lyric, "And I just slowly fade away," seems to me not to be raging against obscurity and dieing alone and unloved, but instead, taking it as a point of pride: He can live his own life to completion and oblivion, and no-one will notice. This is a plus. An advantage. A desirable way to live one's life, contrasted against the restrictions and obligations one's religion, family, or society can place on one's life. It's an interesting contrast, weighing the pros and cons of being alone and beholden to none.

This song somehow reminds me of the movie (and album) The Wall, by Pink Floyd. To me it speaks about a person who is willingly isolated from the rest of the world, just so he won't be hurt by others, or see just how nasty things can get outside.
