Easy Wind Lyrics - Grateful Dead
Review The Song (2)
I been balling a shiny black steel jack-hammer,
been chippin' up rocks for the great highway,
live five years if I take my time,
ballin' that jack and a drinkin' my wine.
I been chippin' them rocks from dawn till doom,
while my rider hide my bottle in the other room.
Doctor say better stop ballin' that jack,
if I live five years I gonna bust my back, yes I will.
Easy wind cross the Bayou today
cause there's a whole lotta women, mama,
out in red on the streets today.
And the rivers keep a talkin',
but you never heard a word it said.
Gotta find a woman be good to me,
won't hide my liquor try to serve me tea,
cause I'm a stone jack baller and my heart is true
and I'll give everything that I got to you, yes I will.
Easy wind going cross the Bayou today
there's a whole lotta women
out on the streets in red today.
And the rivers keep a talkin',
but you never heard a word it said.
been chippin' up rocks for the great highway,
live five years if I take my time,

The Greatest Dead Song? | Reviewer: Hondo | 6/14/2007
Most people might not think so, but think what it has (I'm referring to the studio version from Workingman's Dead, as well as the live versions on the remastered WD and Fallout from the Phil Zone, as well as other live versions available on-line - these comments hold true for all):
Great riff, pithy lyrics, hard-driving bluesy rock 'n roll (Thank you, Garcia & Hunter);
Superlative singing and harmonica - Pigpen at his peak (Thank you, Ron McKernan);
Outstanding riff playing and scorching lead-off solos - some of his very best - by Bob Weir (Thank you, Bob);
Great rhythm playing backing Weir and, especially, equally outstanding bring-it-home solos by Garcia (thanks again, Jerry);
Perfect bass playing balling that jack all the way through, just what the song calls for (thank you, Phil Lesh); and
A great example of the Dead's always strong drumming, dealing with a difficult time signature, and keeping the jackhammer hammering (thank you Bill Kreutzmann and - I think he was still with the band, certainly was to record WD - Mickey Hart).
So, all in all, a great, hard-driving song that shows every original member, plus Mickey Hart at least in the studio, of the Grateful Dead in top form. I can understand that the Grateful Dead probably couldn't play it after Pigpen died; it's such a Pigpen song. I would love, however, to hear RatDog give it a try. Mr. Weir could rework those great solos of his, and Mark Karan could more than do the bring-it-home solos justice.
Weir's playing on Easy Wind is so good, I thought he should have included it on Weir Here, even though he doesn't sing a note.
Along with Love Light, this is for me the ultimate Pigpen song.

Easy Wind is easy to listen to | Reviewer: Shari | 9/2/2005
Easy Wind has been one of my favorite Dead songs since the first time I heard it. Regrettably I never got to hear it live, as Pigpen passed away when I was three. He still remains my second favorite member of GD. This song rocks. He has a strong vocal, with harmonica to back it up, and Jerry throws in this fantastic guitar bit that makes you want to put on your hippie gear and dance!
