EDITH AND THE KINGPIN Lyrics
Artist(Band):Joni Mitchell
Review The Song (8)Print the Lyrics
The big man arrives
Disco dancers greet him
Plainclothes cops greet him
Small town, big man, fresh lipstick glistening
Sophomore jive
From victims of typewriters
The band sounds like typewriters
The big man he's not listening
His eyes hold Edith
His left hand holds his right
What does that hand desire
That he grips it so tight

Edith in the ring
The passed-over girls are conferring
The man with the diamond ring is purring
All claws for now withdrawn
One by one they bring
His renegade stories to her
His crimes and his glories to her
In challenge they look on
Women he has taken grow old too soon
He tilts their tired faces
Gently to the spoon

Edith in his bed
A plane in the rain is humming
The wires in the walls are humming
Some song-some mysterious song
Bars in her head
Beating frantic and snowblind
Romantic and snowblind
She says-his crime belongs
Edith and the Kingpin
Each with charm to sway
Are staring eye to eye
They dare not look away
You know they dare not look away

Review about EDITH AND THE KINGPIN

Incredible | Reviewer: Al | 4/11/09

One of the finest pieces I've heard. The mood is set from the opening bar. I think Herb & Tina's version is hypnotic, extremely emotional, and filled with a depth rarely felt. Joni's lyrics are beyond comparison.

Joni on Edith | Reviewer: james D'Addio | 2/24/09

Listening to the comparison to Tina
Joni has a tiny voice but pop swing is sweet and groovy nothing like listening to the creator however Tina is the big bomb for this tune in Herbies hands has it down.. If rerecorded I would want to hear a boost to Jon't beautiful voice as the main ingredient. amazing tune

don't sleep on Lionel Loueke | Reviewer: M. Forman | 10/21/08

I concur with all 'y'all that the Herbie/Tina version is sublime. Joni provided a superb piece of art and Herbie's crew hit it brilliantly. Don't overlook the amazingly restrained, subtle, nuanced and tasteful guitar work of Lionel Loueke. The wah-wah, the single note rhythm work, the sparse semi-reggae"chukka-chukka" feel. Everyone in the session is at their peak on this piece...I'm feeling the guitar right about now, until I listen again and register all the other instrumental "voices' that others have mentioned. I'm with Jeff on the question: "Is this the perfect song?" Whatever perfect means, this would be one exemplar against which it should be measured.

Melody Gardot and Hancock | Reviewer: Paul | 10/2/08

For the Sundance television series "Live at Abbey Road" Melody Gardot replaces Tina and edges her out in the interpretation. Like anonymous said (1/3/2007) the songs imagery is haunting. Mitchell puts you right in the club as the scene unfolds. Incredible.

I've loved this song for almost 30 years. I still have my Hissing of Summer Lawns LP. It's in great condition as is my turn table and I still use them both.

On the tribute album released earlier this year, Elvis Costello does a version of this song that is so musically and vocally outstanding, it will give you shivers. Give it a listen.

If I had to send a song to space | Reviewer: Jeff Markham | 9/27/07

I remember the items they placed inside Voyager before they sent it into space to show what humankind looked like, our science and our art. The Herbie Hancock version of Edith and The Kingpin (featuring Tina Turner) would be a late add (imho). Oh my goodness .. is this the perfect song? I think it comes darn close.

The composition of both lyric and melody are so elegant, clever. And Ms. Turners vox are simply amazing .. so deep and emoting in resonance with the tune. I have new respect.

The bassist is awesome .. anouncing changes .. he carries this tune like a concrete / steel infrastructure .. fantastic.

Shorter does what he was born to do ..

Dayam ...

SuperB! | Reviewer: The Guy | 9/25/07

I'm really feeling this song, It's HOT! Incredible lyrics. I must admit i never knew of this particular track until i learned Tina Turner has re-done it. Her version is so GREAT, it is on the Herbie Hancock Joni Mitchell tribute album. Here's a link to here it > http://www.livedaily.com/herbiehancock/

Hauntingly Visual | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/3/07

Possibly one of the finest songs ever composed. Wording so carefully chosen for the emotions they evoke and the vivid visual scenes they compose before the listener's mind. Much insight into the vulnerabilities and needs of the human species. I respect it, admire it and love it.
