DWIGHT YOAKAM has enjoyed a remarkable career. The only
California-based country singer to rise to sustained
national prominence since the heyday of Buck Owens and
Merle Haggard, with more than eight million records sold,
two Grammy awards (and a total of 15 Grammy nominations),
not to mention stacks of accolades for his work as an actor
(in films like the Academy Award-winning Sling Blade),
Yoakam is clearly at the top of his form. His latest
release on Reprise Records, Last Chance For A Thousand
Years: Dwight Yoakam's Greatest Hits From The 90's,
provides an extraordinary overview of the Kentucky-born
country singer's recent achievements. While this is his
second collection of hits, Last Chance... also includes
three brand new tracks: "Thinking About Leaving," w More...

------ About the song Readin', Rightin', Route 23 performed by Dwight Yoakam
Hi Dwight,
Though I am actually from a town in North Carolina that Highway 23 runs thru, I graduated from Berea College in Berea, Kentucky in 1965, and remember well the never ending line of cars driving thru Berea (Highway 25) on Sunday nights on their way back to Ohio and Michigan from weekends in the hills. Your song makes me cry every time I hear it. I also read "The Doll Maker" about a family that moved from Eastern Kentucky to Ohio or maybe Michigan to find work. You must have seen the movie. I lived and worked in Ohio and was discriminated against on my job merely because I was from Appalachia.
I had never really heard your songs until you came to Seattle (Snoqualmie Casino) this summer. I attended with a woman who had an extra free ticket. Your music has made me love country music again, yours anyway. Ha! Ha!
Sincerely,
Fran

------ About the song Ain't That Lonely Yet performed by Dwight Yoakam
I heard this song just shortly after watching an interview with Sharon Stone who was discussing her terminated affair with Dwight. She described him as "worse than a dirt sandwich" which is probably not a perfectly accurate quote, but pretty close. I thought ( or rather, hoped) this song was written for her and it made me feel better. I still do not not know who the "spider" is, but I want to believe he is talking about nasty ole Sharon Stone. This song brought me peace after an awful break-up and so I will always love it! I will never like Sharon Stone due to her terrible comments about my hillbilly favorite Dwight Yoakam.

------ About the song Santa Can't Stay performed by Dwight Yoakam
Dwight's done it again; an instant Christmas classic! Great song, funny lyrics... and the ONLY Christmas song you'll ever hear that contains the line, "beat the crap out of"... HA HA!! (Note; that's missing from the lyrics here but it's in the song!)

The best Christmas song-EVER. If you get nauseous after the 3476th time of the Little Drummer Boy-Parumpa-pum-pum...play this. If you are sad-it will cheer you to hear someone who has it worser. If you are happy, quit smoking that stuff!

------ About the song The Back of Your Hand performed by Dwight Yoakam
This woman and man have obviously had a LONGTIME relationship. Some "DUDE" has come into her life. The woman tries to hide the fact that she's being torn to do something she shouldn't (or already has) by being very distant and sometimes defensive; therefore every word said and everything done between the woman and man now comes under constant scrutiny. They fuss and fight all the time, because they can't understand what's happening to them; and when it seems like the end for them is near, he reminds her of what they have together. They are not only in love and have a lot invested in this relationship, they are reminded that they know each other "like they know the back of their hand(s)", even down to the smallest details like how she likes her coffee, and how she looks when she needs to be held and loved. And he reminds her and reassures her of where HE stands in making it work, regardless of what's happening or has happened.

This happens to be Dwight Yoakam's best album, in my opinion. Just look at the track list! This Time, Fast as You... they're the greatest songs.
