Deep inside these burning buildings
Voices die to be heard
Years we spent teaching a lesson
We ourselves had never learned
And if strength is born from heartbreak
Then mountains I could move
And if walls could speak I’d pray
That they would tell me what to do
If you see me, please just walk on by, walk on by
Forget my name and I’ll forget it too
(Simple lives)
Failed attempts at living simple lives, simple lives,
Are what keep me coming back to you.
No signs of life here, save the embers, the occasional flame
We know the way but can’t remember, conception to the grave
Shout confessions from the greatest heights, where no one can hear
All my fears, my insecurities are falling like tears
If you see me, please just walk on by, walk on by
Forget my name and I’ll forget it too
(Simple lives)
Failed attempts at living simple lives, simple lives,
Are what keep me coming back to you.
The drones all slave away
They’re working overtime
They serve a faceless queen
They never question why
Disciples of a god
(I won’t come back!)
That neither lives nor breathes
(I won’t come back!)
But we have bills to pay,
Yeah we have mouths to feed!
(I won’t come back!)
I won’t change back!
And if you see me, please just walk on by, walk on by
Forget my name and I’ll forget it too
(Simple lives)
Failed attempts at living simple lives, simple lives,
Are what keep me coming back to you.

Rise against has alot of music that really gets you thinking, you may not realize it with the first listen, but it has true meaning. They are not afraid to give their message to everyone, and i praise them for that. some of the best lyrics you can get.
Simpler lives | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/27/09
This song seems to speak about how life is just one repetitive motion and how humanity has become "drones" of not a government nor a God, but of something much simpler - of the life we live and the complacency that we have, our unwillingness to change our ways of living, etc.
"Failed attempts at living simple lives, simple lives, are what keep me coming back to you."
We need to try and live simpler lives not so complicated by technological advances or things that will ultimately cause us to become emotionless drones, incapable of thinking or feeling for ourselves and needing people (or machines even) to tell us what to do, how to feel, etc.
wrong, wrong, wrong | Reviewer: Michael | 4/7/09
All I am going to say is that (1) If you are a true fan of Rise Against you need to read a book called Ishmael by Daniel Quinn, and (2) This song is talking to Mother Nature, and specifically the agricultural lifestyle. This song describes how we are all captives of a story being enacted by our society, and if I say what is I will ruin the whole book. So please, before you analyze Rise Against's lyrics, you need to read Ishmael.

big difference between ppl that work just because "that's what u do in America" to pay bills and feed their faces, and people like me that slave away for a purpose. 8 months I got in trouble for weed. I live in a town that's really tough on herb. now i'm on probation, and I work over 70 hours a week. I go to work, work 8 hours, leave work, go directly to my second job, go home, put in a movie and pass out. then wake up the next day to do it all over again. I don't remember the last full day I had off. but once I have my fines, fees, etc. paid off, i'll keep the same routine for the rest of my sentence. i'm about to move out of my house and live in my car to save the money. why? because as soon as I get off probation, I want to move to colorado, where people like me are accepted and loved. I have dreams and goals that i'm more than willing to slave away for. 6 months into living in colorado, i'll no longer have a real job. i'll be growing marijuana for medicinal patients, truly living the life I love, and loving the life I live. I used to be a huge spendthrift. now I make more money and i'm a minimalist. all for my passion and dream.
Ridiculous | Reviewer: Chris | 1/28/09
I love Rise Against they are definitely my favorite band. But I disagree with everyone who said you have to serve a god to be living. But I agree the song is about people slaving away at their jobs mindlessly without enjoying life. We are so lucky to have this life we should enjoy it as much as possible, and not worry about what may come after for then we are not truly living.

It's not just this song...rise against has not yet made a song that I don't like. All of their songs have meaning behind them that makes them unique from an age where songs are made just for the recording studio. They truly believe what they sing and it makes them enjoyable to listen to the contadictions of society in song.
The drones all slave away

Disciples of a god
That neither lives nor breathes
(I won’t come back!)

so true and it's stupid. we all have forgotten God, no matter what religion. we just serve the government now.
Deep inside these burning buildings
Voices die to be heard
Years we spent teaching a lesson
We ourselves had never learned
the rebels are all being smothered by the government. they teach to not kill, not lie, or anything else that's bad when they are sending troops over other countries and demolishing them for oil.
I... just dont know how to explain my feelings. I am too confused so ill just say that rise against make very... different music, it has something hidden that neither the text neither the music show. I like them. That song is very urban i like it. Its great.!~
good description mark | Reviewer: some dude | 11/13/08
i agree wit mark, i think we should just, destroy everything that has grown in technology in this life, this song is about people who ridicuolisly live the exact same life, doing things the same for 365 days out of a year. Wake up, go to work, work, go home, eat dinner, watch tv, sleep, wake up, go to work etc... we should take away everything, make the WHOLE world primtive again. just to see how some TOTAL LOSERS that dont have lives would make it through life.

It's true... People nowadays don't have a reason to live, they don't serve a god no more, they don't need to hunt to survive... We live to work, and work to buy. All we do is working and killing time. It ridicoulous, people should start living again
