Donovan was not of the sixties or seventies or of any other
time period. But thankfully, he has been with us since the
sixties, and against that backdrop of psychedelia, he looks
quite fine. The Gift From a Flower to a Garden album is a
tour de force of humanness. Gift was released as a
two-record boxed set featuring glowing color prints of
Donovan in fantasy attire alone and communing with the
Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, also of Beatles fame. One of the two
records was entitled For Little Ones and was filled with
music suitable for children. Many of the songs are
characterized by a mood of gentle fantasy, with exquisite
lyrics evoking brilliant and surprising images, laid over
smoothly-structured, elegantly simple acoustical guitar
arrangements. More...

------ About the song Isle of Islay performed by Donovan Leitch
I agree with everything Susan said, it's a beautiful song that lifts you up and carries you away to another place. It's all about the emotion he puts into his voice for me, it's to die for! If you like this, I recommend the entire "gift from a flower to a garden" album.

------ About the song Donna Donna performed by Donovan Leitch
Fantastic, I love this song - I've been looking for it for years. I fell in love with it as a 10 year old child and I sang it to my children. Now my 10 year old son has the same feeling that it aroused in me. I love the imagery and the story it tells. The music is haunting, the words a little sad and it has remained with me for the last 33 years. Thankyou Donovan for penning this soulful little ballad.

------ About the song The Tinker and the Crab performed by Donovan Leitch
I have always loved this song. I did an English project using this, it was a project that was to take a poem and do illustrations for it. The teacher did not expect a Donovan song, at first she gave me a hard time about it but, after she read it she agreed, it is a poem.
When in church in bootcamp (Parris Island), we would sing this every weekend, and we Marines would shout out the part (in caps) "the holy people SAID IT WAS A SHAME." I got the feeling it was a tradition that had been going on a very long time...

------ About the song Hurdy Gurdy Man performed by Donovan Leitch
EDINBURGH, Scotland (AP) ― Donovan, famous for '60s pop hits such as "Hurdy Gurdy Man" and "Mellow Yellow," has announced plans to open the Invincible Donovan University, where students will adhere to the principles of transcendental meditation.
"I know it sounds like an airy-fairy hippie dream to go on about '60s peace and love," said the 61-year-old singer, who was born Donovan Leitch in the Maryhill area of Glasgow. "But the world is ready for this now, it is clear this is the time."
He said the university will be located in either Glasgow or Edinburgh.
Donovan discovered transcendental meditation while visiting India and guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in 1968.
"The Maharishi told me during that 1968 visit that I should build a university in Edinburgh. I went to my room and drew a beautiful dome-shaped place of learning," he said Friday.
"I didn't know what to do because I couldn't do this on my own. But then I met David Lynch, who told me about the positive effects of TM in education. Although it's taken me 35 years, I will do what the Maharishi told me to do."
Dreams and memories -Isle of Islay | Reviewer: Susan Scarcella
------ About the song Isle of Islay performed by Donovan Leitch
I had a cassette of Donovan's greatest hits, and Isle of Islay was on it. It is a soft, evocative song, peaceful, a mix of happiness and sadness in the lyrics. You feel the isolation of the island and the time that passes without anything significant happening. "Felt like the tide left me here". Donovan also makes you feel that you are really something very small in the great scheme of things. "Felt like a grain on your sand". The song still brings me back to my late teens and still evokes the same feelings, perhaps a little more poignantly now as I have hit middle age.

------ About the song Lord of the Dance performed by Donovan Leitch
I danced for the scribe and the pharisee
But they would not dance and they wouldn't follow me
I danced for the fishermen, for Peter James and John
They came with me and the Dance went on:
Donovan is one of the people with a gift to share. He has a gentle heart - a quality lost in so many in this age of email and computers. The pace of life has gotten so fast, and the qualities of friendliness, enthusiasm, and sincerity are being lost. The soundtrack Donovan wrote for the Ziffirelli film, Brother Sun Sister Moon, has some of the best advice for our nuclear age (thank you, Pete Seeger). Check out YouTube for the movie name, and discover another gentle heart (Francis of Assisi) and Donovan's gift. Thank you Donovan, for reminding us of the world we live in.

oh my god i used to sing this in school (primary) - that was in the 70s.
starfish on the toast was another one....wonder if they're on you tube?
I enjoyed listening to this song when I was in my teens. I turned 58 a couple of days ago and still I enjoy listening to this song. In my opinion this is a beautiful love song.
I have heard another verse
I danced for the fishmen
for James and John
they followed me and the dance went on
I can't remeber any more. If you have heard it could you please e-mail it to me? I know it is not an official verse but it fits nicely.
