Donovan Leitch Lyrics

by Charles Carreon

Donovan was not of the sixties or seventies or of any other
time period. But thankfully, he has been with us since the
sixties, and against that backdrop of psychedelia, he looks
quite fine. The Gift From a Flower to a Garden album is a
tour de force of humanness. Gift was released as a
two-record boxed set featuring glowing color prints of
Donovan in fantasy attire alone and communing with the
Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, also of Beatles fame. One of the two
records was entitled For Little Ones and was filled with More...

Review about Donovan Leitch songs
I remember it differently | Reviewer: Marian McAfee
------ About the song Happiness Runs performed by Donovan Leitch

Happiness runs in a circular motion
Life is like a little boat upon the sea
All our souls are bigger than you can see
You can have everything
If you let yourself be
You can have everything if you let yourself be
(This is what I recall but may ave been sung by John Denver)
For what it's worth....

------ About the song Skip-A-Long Sam performed by Donovan Leitch

It's not a deep song but it brings back memories of being 15 and young and loving any song I heard of Donovan's. At the time it always lifted my spirits to hear it. Thank you for asking

Very Interesting... Really? | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song The Heights of Alma performed by Donovan Leitch

"Donovan's Universal Soldier song has the line "And he is the fighting for the Russians..."

That song mentions the USA, France, the Reds, the Jews, Catholics, Hindus... almost everyone EXCEPT for Protestants and the Great Britain."

Might have been an interesting point, except for the fact that it was written by Buffy Sainte-Marie, who is, of course, American...

The lyrics for Donovan's song are based on a broadside ballad written about the time of the battle.

The Mountain | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song The Mountain performed by Donovan Leitch

It is one of my favourite songs of all time from a man who has given so many beautiful songs... the spoken word still gets me in deep. So few people have ever heard it as at is not on the most listened to albums

Very interesting...

Donovan's Universal Soldier song has the line "And he is the fighting for the Russians..."

That song mentions the USA, France, the Reds, the Jews, Catholics, Hindus... almost everyone EXCEPT for Protestants and the Great Britain.

Now here is the song, clearly glorifying his motherland's bloody victory.

Very interesting......

------ About the song Season of the Witch performed by Donovan Leitch

"You got to pick up every stitch"

This era was the beginning in more serious introspection, meditation etc.... in knitting you can "drop a stitch" ie leave one out .... if you "pick up a stitch" you go back and fill in a missing stitch to correct the error.... seems like he may allude to the way we now sometimes go back to correct a missing or malformed part of our personality to become more whole .... as people began to do through psychedelics and or meditation.

Another world | Reviewer: Colleen
------ About the song Season of the Witch performed by Donovan Leitch

There is something about Donovan's music that instantly transports me back to the Summer of Love and the sounds, feelings and smells of patch and incense wafting on the breeze. His voice was mesmerizing and was like a soft caress bringing feelings of peacefulness. Not always understood but none the less one of the best ways to go back to those days. My wish is that we will have the world,I believe, Donovan wanted for us. Peace and love..Namaste

Donovan did not write this | Reviewer: KL Fan
------ About the song Donna Donna performed by Donovan Leitch

Just wanted to point out that Donovan did not write this song. It's an old Yiddish song from the 1920s and was previously included on the first Joan Baez album (where Donovan may have first heard it, he even had a brief fling with her one night)

Good Song, Not If There's Anything Wrong With That | Reviewer: KL Fan
------ About the song To Try for the Sun performed by Donovan Leitch

It is a shame people regard this as a homosexual song. The "gypsy boy" is not a lover but Donovan's best friend Gypsy Dave who was his traveling companion whom he hitchiked through the English countryside during his teenage years.

Beautiful song | Reviewer: Roo
------ About the song Isle of Islay performed by Donovan Leitch

I agree with everything Susan said, it's a beautiful song that lifts you up and carries you away to another place. It's all about the emotion he puts into his voice for me, it's to die for! If you like this, I recommend the entire "gift from a flower to a garden" album.
