Supertramp has to be an acquired taste for those songs beyond the top 40 hit parade, this song is one of them. The lyrics are indeed powerful and speak eloquently (if simply) of loneliness. The music is strong and stirring, particularly at the end with the drums pounding the slow rhythm of the beat. One of their best, IMO. Roger Hodgson's voice, the lyrics, the music and the way that saxophone blends in it... all add to the feeling. This song sounds just what it feels like when you've been left alone and abandoned. Having nowhere to go, losing the earth beneath your feet, starting over again, feeling worthless and devastated. Amazing but it makes me cry sometimes.
