Johnny's daddy was taking him fishin'
When he was eight years old.
Little girl came through the front gate
holdin' a fishin' pole.
His dad looked down and smiled,
said, "We can't leave her behind"
"Son, I know you don't want her to go,
but someday you'll change your mind."
And Johnny said,
"Take Jimmy Johnson,
take Tommy Tompson.
Take my best friend, Bo.
Take anybody that you want as
long as she don't go.
Take any boy in the world,
daddy please, don't take the girl."
Same old boy, same sweet girl
ten years down the road.
He held her tight and kissed her lips in
front of the picture show.
Stranger came and pulled a gun
Grabbed her by the arm said "If you do what I tell you to do,
there won't be any harm"
And Johnny said "Take my money,
take my wallet,
take my credit cards.
Here's the watch that my grandpa gave me
Here's the key to my car
Mister give it a whirl,
But please don't take the girl."
Same old boy
Same sweet girl
Five years down the road
There's gonna be a little one and she
says it's time to go.
Doctor says the baby's fine
but you'll have to leave
'Cause his momma's fading fast and
Johnny hit his knees and there he prayed
"Take the very breath you gave me.
Take the heart from my chest.
I'll gladly take her place if you'll let me,
make this my last request.
Take me out of this world
God, please don't take the girl"
Johnny's daddy
Was taking him fishin'
When he was eight years old

Don't take the girl | Reviewer: flea | 9/15/08
I think that the song is trying to tell people that there is good men out there, and that they are willing to do anything for their loved ones. In the beginning of the song Johnny was just a little kid. When your little you think that girls have cooties and that is what Johnny thought. In the end he was the love of her life and was willing to sacrfice his own life for her.
does the girl live or die? | Reviewer: ali | 3/4/08
the girl does die. the first and last verse are the same, so i think that both verses involve the same characters at the same point in time (the present). the parts about the picture show and the labor are flashbacks. johnny's daddy in the beginning is the same johnny as in the picture show and labor parts. the girl gives birth to a son and dies in labor; the boy is also named johnny. so at the beginning the younger johnny is the son and the older johnny is the one that the majority of the song is about. in the last verse, the younger johnny is again the son and the older johnny is the one who just had all the flashbacks about the picture show and his wife dying in labor. sorry to burst everyone's bubble, but the girl does die :[
I'm confused by this song..Not by like the lyrics or the meaning.. But my now ex-boyfriend sang it to me..And it became "our song." I'm kinda wondering if this is a good song to have as our song, and if it is, what the meaning would be if your boyfriend sang it to you..
SOOOO COnfused..please help
True Love | Reviewer: Emilee | 2/4/08
I think that this song is about true love, and how it comes when you least expect it to. He was just a little boy going fishing with his dad, and this girl came thru a gate and all he could think about was that he did'nt want anybody to come along, especially a girl. As the years go by he falls in love with that girl he never wanted to come. In the song it tells about what lengths that he has gone thru to keep the girl. At the end it just goes to show that if you truly love someone then you will go to all sorts of lengths to keep that love alive, even if it means giving up your own life. I think that all true love should be like this song.
all the girls ive dated have told me that this song fits me because it sounds like something i would do give my life to save some one i love every time i hear this song it reminds me of all my lovesmost especially my first and current girl friend
sweet song | Reviewer: country lover | 11/6/07
The lyric never said she went fishing but we can guess she did and as time went by they fell in love.I think is the same at the end of the song, I think she made it. I also think is Johnny's story but not in the current time but 23 years back in time, I think johnny is remenbering the first time he said "Don't take the girl" at very moment he is praying for the life of his wife.
