Don't Lose Touch Lyrics - Against Me!

Review The Song (7)

You're coming off kinda contrived and pretentious
You're not sayin anything we haven't heard before
You're caught up in an argument
oh oh You're so lost in modern art.
You will lose it all, and you will find again.

Don't lose touch. Don't lose touch.

SOS Texted from a cell phone.
Please tell me I'm not the only one
that thinks we're taking ourselves too seriously.
Just a little too enamoured with inflated self purpose.
Talk is cheap. And it doesn't mean much.

Don't lose touch. Don't lose touch.

I'm losing touch. I'm losing touch. (I'm losing touch)
well, I'm losing touch. I'm losing touch. (well, I'm losing touch)

Constant entertainment for our restless minds.
Constant stimulation for epic appetites.
Is there something wrong with these songs?
Maybe there's something wrong with the audience.
Manipulation in rock music. Fucking Nausea.

I'm losing touch. I'm losing touch. (I'm losing touch)
I'm losing touch. And it's obvious.

Tom is one of the greatest rock music writers of all time. His lyrics really seem to you. There should be a lot more real, honest music like this being heard. I'm so sick of the commercialized radio top 40 garbage that we are bombarded with constantly. The Ramones said it best; "We need change and we need it fast, before rocks just part of the past, cause lately it all sounds the same to me.". That was in 1979. Look at how bad it has become now.

Keep it real | Reviewer: Christopher | 11/9/09

To me, the easiest enterpretation of the song meaning is:

"You're coming off kinda contrived and pretentious
You're not sayin anything we haven't heard before
You're caught up in an argument
oh oh You're so lost in modern art.
You will lose it all, and you will find again."

About young people. The young are naive and think they know everything, when in fact they know nothing. Somewhere along the line you realise this (losing it all and finding it again).

"SOS Texted from a cell phone.
Please tell me I'm not the only one
that thinks we're taking ourselves too seriously.
Just a little too enamoured with inflated self purpose.
Talk is cheap. And it doesn't mean much."

About our collective exaggeration of irrational fear. After all, if you have cel-phone coverage, how needy of SOS are you really? We all think of ourselves as the main character of our own little story, but most people only have talk to show for it at the end of the line. Stop taking yourself so seriously.

"Constant entertainment for our restless minds.
Constant stimulation for epic appetites.
Is there something wrong with these songs?
Maybe there's something wrong with the audience.
Manipulation in rock music. Fucking Nausea."

About the consumers of today. We need ten times the entertainment at no price and at the highest possible quality. People should be content with "real" music, instead of the "manipulating" marketed radio hits that we're being fed at an increasing rate.

Just a thought | Reviewer: Cody D. | 8/3/09

I have kind of played out a scenario in which this song is about a date gone awry. Especially the first few verses; it really describes a bad date, which ends with the two people saying, "don't lose touch."

Then, the lyrics go on to explain how the girl in the date, who is contrived and pretentious, texts SOS as if the guy is whats wrong with the date.

Then basically, Tom goes on to criticize the inflated personality that so many people are born with.
The next chorus, he says, "I'm losing touch", suggesting he doesn't recoginize himself as a part of the depersonalized culture that so many are embracing through entertainment and commercialized music.

The punch line is, "and it's obvious", which is really quite funny; in the midst of the satirical song, Tom finally focuses on himself, pointing out that he has no connection once soever with the modern ways, and he's sticking out like a sore thumb.

Sorry it's so long, I'm an English major, who loves to over analyze!

re: The meaning | Reviewer: John | 7/30/08

I think that they realize that people in society more and more day after day are not as humble as they used to be. People like to inflate themselves to appear bigger and better withough making contributions to society. "Talk is cheap, and it doesnt mean much" People convince themselves that they are great, to one day realize they have done nothing really GREAT and they are normal regular people then they breakdown and send out the SOS. Thats my interpretation.

The meaning... | Reviewer: Bernardo | 2/23/08

What's the meaning of the lyrics?
I had some reflections about it and i found it was some kind of an anwser to the critics they have been through when they turn a little bit the band style. They say "Is there something wrong with these songs?" and also that they're "losing touch". They comented the critics on the first verse and the critic is that they're "Lost in modern art", he makes an irony with that saying it's a cliche argument.

On the second verse the author talk about the movement they had been through, didn't it makes sense?
