Dogs Lyrics - Pink Floyd
Review The Song (18)
You got to be crazy, you gotta have a real need
You gotta sleep on your toes and when you're on the street
You got to be able to pick out the easy meat with your eyes closed
And then moving in silently, down wind and out of sight
You gotta strike when the moment is right without thinking
And after a while, you can work on points for style
Like the club tie, and the firm handshake
A certain look in the eye and an easy smile
You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to
So that when they turn their backs on you
You'll get the chance to put the knife in
You gotta keep one eye looking over your shoulder
You know, it's going to get harder, and harder, and harder
As you get older
Yeah, and in the end you'll pack up and fly down south
Hide your head in the sand
Just another sad old man
All alone and dying of cancer
And when you lose control, you'll reap the harvest you have sown
And as the fear grows, the bad blood slows and turns to stone
And it's too late to lose the weight you used to need to throw around
So have a good drown, as you go down all alone
Dragged down by the stone
Gotta admit that I'm a little bit confused
Sometimes it seems to me as if I'm just being used
Gotta stay awake, gotta try and shake off this creeping malaise
If I don't stand my own ground, how can I find my way out of this maze
Deaf, dumb and blind, you just keep on pretending
That everyone's expendable, and no one has a real friend
And it seems to you the thing to do would be to isolate the winner
Everything's done under the sun
But you believe at heart everyone's a killer
Who was born in a house full of pain
Who was trained not to spit in the fan
Who was told what to do by the man
Who was broken by trained personnel
Who was fitted with collar and chain
Who was given a pat on the back
Who was breaking away from the pack
Who was only a stranger at home
Who was ground down in the end
Who was found dead on the phone
Who was dragged down by the stone
Who was dragged down by the stone
You gotta sleep on your toes and when you're on the street
You got to be able to pick out the easy meat with your eyes closed
And then moving in silently, down wind and out of sight
You gotta strike when the moment is right without thinking
And after a while, you can work on points for style

Who was dragged down by the stone. The millstone, as in the Bible. Matthew 18:6 "But if you cause one of these little ones who trusts in me to fall into sin, it would be better for you to have a large millstone tied around your neck and be drowned in the depths of the sea."

Brilliant, nothing more to say, the best song, from the best album, and from the best band... If I have to chose best parts from the song that will be Gilmours solos, but other band members do not lapse also...
this world isn't beautyful. | Reviewer: a fan since 12 | 5/5/12
Waters is a genius. my english is not good enough to say, what everyone else knows anyway, who loves this music/lyrics. beeing a poet, musician, songwriter and a critic of society in this way is mindblowing. this man tells so much the truth. when i was 20, the lyrics weren't that important, it was the music. things change. btw, pink floyd let a big pic (it was a ballon) fly over england, when "animals" was released. officially it was by accident.

One of the greatest Pink Floyd songs, if not one of the greatest songs of the past 50 years. Do they make them like this anymore?
I think not.
Try to imagine a band this talented in 2011 churning out a masterpiece like this. Impossible.
This song reminds me of my dad, a former businessman who is now all alone in Florida. Talk about hitting the proverbial nail on the head.
The Pinnacle of Pink Floyd | Reviewer: Azgeodude | 10/18/11
Just listen to the song and read the lyrics along as you listen. It is such an emotionally strong song and highly visual, and the ending is almost overwhelming (I'm practically crying right now). It's like the climax to Inception (except I got full body goosebumps there). Every time this song comes on, I have to stop whatever I'm doing for 17 minutes!
Animal farm | Reviewer: C. Emily Play | 7/5/11
Indeed this song and the whole "Animals" album is based on Animal Farm. However, this song is about the cutthroat business world; egostistical businessmen who will do anything to get ahead; and the destruction of themselves and those around them. BTW, as amazing as Gilmour's guitar parts are in the album version, he apparently laid down an even better performance that was accidentily recorded over.
Interesting coincidence? | Reviewer: Lucifer sam | 5/26/11
I cant help but wonder if this was aimed towards syd barret, Take into account this was after wish you where here, a supposed failed apology attempt.
Reasons i think this:
1."A firm handshake"- Possible wish you were here reference, mechanical hands shaking are sometimes referred to as a metaphor for syd's physical presence but mental absence.
2. "a certain look in the eye"...like black holes in the sky?
3. "As you get older Yeah, and in the end you'll pack up and fly down south Hide your head in the sand Just another sad old man All alone and dying of cancer"-Possible reference to syd's seclusion?
4. "And when you lose control, you'll reap the harvest you have sown"- Syd's acid trips? possible regret?
I could go on but those are the major references that come to mind. I know roger was a rather angry person around the time this was made, and lyric choice was courtesy of roger.
Just something ive noticed and cant help but share

this song is based on the book "Animal Farm" by George Orwell... This books describes the different groups of men which exit in the society.....dogs are the police, the corrupt police....pigs are the powerfull and corrupt politician...and sheeps represents people who does not think, who follow the masses....
My favorite pink Floyd song! What does it mean? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/19/11
I love trying to find the meanings to songs and I know here's an undercover meaning to this one. Obviously it's about not being able to trust anyone but what else does it mean? Can anyone help me here?
Quintessential Pink Floyd! | Reviewer: There is no spoon | 1/3/11
Incredible visuals and David Gilmour at his best. Makes my hair stand up every time. 17 minutes of four guys pouring all their hearts into what they love... goes by too fast. You’re reading these posts because you know there’s something special about this song.
Did you know.......? | Reviewer: KBc | 3/10/10
This song was developed from 'Gotta be Crazy' that the Floyd played on tour in 1974. On the same tour, they also previewed 'Raving and Drooling' which metamorphosed into the track 'Sheep'. Both songs were originally intended for the follow-up to DSOTM, but a bootleg recorded at a UK gig shifted so many copies that their record company feared that it might adversely affect sales of the forthcoming album. So, while 'Shine on you Crazy Diamond' was kept in, two new songs were written to replace Gotta be Crazy and Raving and Drooling. They were 'Welcome to the Machine' and the title track 'Wish you were here'. Thankfully, the Floyd didn't waste two great songs, but re-cycled them for the 'Animals' album .
e-Gold Theme Song | Reviewer: One Sad Goldbug | 7/26/08
This is the perfect theme song for e-Gold, the disgraced e-currency. This song describes the guy who started it perfectly. He was arrogant and gave the government the finger for more than a decade. In July 2008 he pleaded guilty to money laundering along with his two henchmen. This song reads like a biography of e-Gold. If your life is going to be a Shakespearean tragedy, at least make sure that it follows a great song like this one, and not some pop tripe.
The best | Reviewer: fairbank | 2/15/08
Dogs is the ultimate pink floyd and progressive rock song... the lyrics, the delivery of those lyrics, the atmosphere, the instrumentation... it's all perfect. This song moves me like an incredible book and a split-second emotional experience all at once. It doesn't get any better then this for this progger. As a previous poster said, yeah, Money is great and Another Brick is fun, but Dogs is really the apex of Pink Floyd as an artistic expression of the world around us, which is what all good prog tries to be.

I had at home this record on a tape, and it is really GREAT; some days ago I´ve seen it on the live version of "In the Flesh" concert and had to put my two thumbs up...impressive. Five stars.
