Does Everyone Stare Lyrics - Sting & Police

Review The Song (1)

Written by Stewart Copeland

I change my clothes ten times
Before I take you on a date
I'm in a cold sweat, my panic it makes me late
I know you never entered for this
I know
My shots will always miss
My shots will always miss

Does everyone stare this way at you?
I only look this way at you

I change my clothes ten times
Before I take you on a date
I get the heebie-jeebies, and my panic makes me late
I break into a cold sweat reaching for the phone
I let it ring twice before
I chicken out and decide you're not at home

Does everyone stare the way I do?
I only stare this way at you

I never noticed the size of my feet
'Til I kicked you in the shins
Will you ever forgive me for the shape I'm in
For the shape I'm in

Does everyone stare the way I do?
I only stare this way at you

I'm gonna write you a sonnet but I don't know where to start
I'm so used to laughing at the things in my heart
Last of all I'm sorry 'cos you never asked for this
I can see I'm not your type and my shots will always miss, always miss

Does everyone stare the way I do?
I only stare this way at you
Does everyone stare the way I do?
I only stare this way at you
Does everyone stare the way I do?
I only stare this way at you
Does everyone stare the way I do?
I only stare this way at you
Does everyone stare the way I do?
I only stare this way at you
Does everyone stare the way I do?
I only stare this way at you

The "Noisy One" Gets His Voice | Reviewer: The Doctor | 10/14/2005

Stewart Copeland, erstwhile drummer for The Police, has never made it a secret that he & Sting were constantly at odds for creative control of the band. Unfortunately, he was truly at a disadvantage when confronting the other force of nature in this trio; Sting, arrogant jerk that he can be, is a master songsmith with a voice to go along beside the tunes. The talent was all-inclusive.

However, there are a few times in The Police's history where Sting's ego took a backseat, acknowledging that the other members could write great songs as well. While Stewart & Andy didn't have Sting's vocal range or control, they were certainly not remiss in the songwriting category, and the Stewart Copeland-penned "Does Everyone Stare?" is a prime example.

From the outset, Stew's original scratch tracks (vox / piano / bass) sets the tone for this quirky yet endearing "love song through a glass, darkly", & Sting masterfully completes the picture, taking over the role of the bumbling, nervous hand-wringer.

It's a drag that more of these collaborations never saw the light of day, but, given the band's tempestuous history, sometimes it's a wonder that some of these tracks ever got recorded at all.
