Do What You Have To Do Lyrics - Sarah McLachlan

Review The Song (6)

What ravages of spirit
conjured this temptuous rage,
created you a monster,
broken by the rule of love?
And fate has led you through it.
You do what you have to do.
And fate has led you through it.
You do what you have to do.

And I have the sense to recognize
that I don't know how to let you go.

Every moment marked
with apparitions of your soul.
I'm ever swiftly moving,
trying to escape this desire,
the yearning to be near you.
I do what I have to do.
The yearning to be near you.
I do what I have to do.

AND I have the sense to recognize
that I don't know how to let you go.
I don't know how to let you go.

A glowing ember, burning hot,
AND burning slow.
Deep within, I'm shaken by the violence
of existing for only you.

I know I can't be with you.
I do what I have to do.
I know I can't be with you.
I do what I have to do.

And I have THE sense to recognize
But I don't know how to let you go.
I don't know how to let you go.

A woman I have been seeing sent this song to me saying I could relate to it. I can. It spells out her feelings of love for me exactly like the song says. Since I just lost my wife of 32 years to cancer I can not say I love her but she doesn't get it. Thus she identifies with this "un-love" song. Thanks for nothing Sarah.

Such a powerful theme... | Reviewer: musicdude | 7/2/11

I keep wanting to think this is about unrequited love. She can't have her hottest (the ember burning hot) desire, and she struggles knowing that she can't be with this person. Whether I'm right or not, this is an absolute beauty.

I remember the first time I heard this song, I was going thru such a rough time, it made me cry so hard. It has soo much emotion & feeling in every single word that she sings, it's incredible. I listened to this to come to peace w/ myself, to stop hating myself for something that was far from my control. You can't make anyone love you, you just have to let go, especially when it's the hardest thing to do, it's almost always the solution to a broken heart. Thank you Sarah, you're a beautiful person inside & out.

This song is incredibly sad..reminds me vividly of a recent relationship...what i like about this song is it doesn't blame the other person...not an easy thing to do...it's about acceptance of the other person but recognising the relationship cannot work and the hardship of trying to get over someone when perhaps you weren't quite ready to let them go but felt you had to for your sanity/survival of self.

this is a beautiful song, but i think she has so many depressing songs its hard to say this is the most. I love wintersong, its such a meaningful heartbroken song, but its beautiful. Music is pointless unless it really touches you, and Sarah McLachlan is one of the very few that can take your feelings and spell them out when you have no words to describe.

I can't believe how good this song is ... it's probably one of the sadest song she has written to date
