i had a big idea
i had a crazy eye
i broke the sacred seal
i told a lazy lie
i've had my conscience bent
i've had my patience tried
i've been up in the desert and
down by the riverside
will the eagle fly
if the sky's untrue?
do the faithful sigh
because they are so few?
remember when i cried?
remember when you knew?
remember the look in your eyes?
i know i do
and count the stars to measure time
the earth is hard, the treasure fine
to the sea, i crawl on my knees
feel it coming in
feel it going out
water covers sand
blood covers doubt
so i begin again
again, the healing bow
there was a time when i might have surrendered
but not now
consult the cards to measure mine
the earth is hard, but the treasure fine
to the sea, i crawl on my knees
consult the cards to measure mine
the earth is hard, but the treasure fine
at the sea, i'll wait on my knees
at the sea, i'll wait on my knees
at the sea, i'll wait on my knees

I don't understand all of the song either. It seems to speak of sin and repentance.
The part with the cards seems occult to me, I agree.
Maybe the song is about how we sin and repent and then sin again and have to repent again, over and over again, because we are so weak.
I don't know.

my soul is in tears - both tatters and flowing salted streams... but what does Jars imply? "consult the cards to measure mine, the earth is hard, the treasure fine, at the sea I wait on my knees......consult the cards to measure my, ..."
I came from a love of the occult to find myself wrapped in HIS arms of love collapsed in resobbing relief in the safety of HIS BEING...
Does anyone out there know what these lyrics mean?
Nothing compares to my Holy Father, no thing.
May HE fill you as HE fills me...
I'm a suicidal brokenness without HIM.
I can praise nothing in me but HIS touch, HIS chosen designing of this clay...
And that will I do: All Glory to HIM, my KING.
