“…Banhart was born in Texas in 1981, and named by an Indian
mystic whom his parents followed. When his folks divorced
two years later, he moved with his mom to Caracas ,
Venezuela , where he was raised amidst the shanties and
sweatshops. Though his family had enough money to stay
above the poverty line, life wasn't easy.
" Venezuela was insane," says Banhart. "You don't go out
after 8 because it's too dangerous. You don't wear nice
sneakers because, while here you may get assaulted, there
you just get killed."
When Banhart's mother remarried, his stepfather moved the
family to Los Angeles . In the fall of 1998, having written

this is only my opinion. but when i listen to this song it creates a creepy yet beautiful atmosphire. its a chilling piece of music but one that once you have herd it you are compeled to her it again and again.
a very simple notes played on a guitar along with a beautiful voice.
when i listen to this piece i can picture corn fields and sunshine.
a truly wonderful piece of music.
darkening but divine.
I'll be 67 soon and I'm glad I was introduced to Banhart by my daughter who just graduated from UVM after I encouraged her to pick up a CD by Willie (SP) Mason.
I'm sending another daughter his newest CD for Christmas, she's in Granada , Spain, and she'll appreciate the Spainish lyrics. I'm send ing the lyrics before the CD because I think it will peak her curiosity.
Banhart is unique!! but I immediately felt a connection to other great artist ie. Paul Simon,
Tom Waits, Laurie Anderson, Prince, Phillip Glass, and yes Elvis Presley.

------ About artist/band Devendra Banhart
I've only been listening to Devendra Banhart for a few weeks, but he is suddenly one of my favorite singer/songwriters ever. The simplicity and beauty of his songs remind me of Cat Stevens (another love of mine *swoon*) but he also has a knack for writing about ANYTHING. There seem to be no limits to this guys lyrics and I can't help but smile to hear the creative ways he fits his words into the melody. To not hear this guy's music is to really miss out on a big part of folk music today.
