The Story In a story that never suffers from its retelling, Denali formed in 2000 when an unheard of singer named Maura Davis asked her brother, Engine Down's Keeley Davis, if he wanted to start a band with her. One could only imagine his surprise. Not only had the then-19-year-old enchantress yet to write a proper song, but no one knew she had a voice in her as powerful and as compelling as the one that would easily exhale the band's first dozen songs-all of which would lead to the recruiting of fellow Richmond, VA scene vets Cam DiNunzio and Jonathan Fuller, who under the name Denali would quickly became one of the hardest sought after bands in the underground. Denali formed in Richmond, VA in 2000 when lead singer and guitarist Maura Davis (Ambulette, Glos) approached her brother, Keeley Davis (Sparta, Glos), drummer Jonathan Fuller and guitarist Cam DiNunzio to form a band, much to Keeley's surprise. In 2001, the band signed to Jade Tree Records, an independent label founded in 1991 by Tim Owen and Darren Walters and home of bands Pedro the Lion, Joan of Arc and Paint it Black. The band disbanded shortly thereafter, Maura soon fronted Ambulette and Keeley joined as bassist for indie rock band Sparta, while Fuller and DiNunzio pursued other musical interests. "Lose Me" clearly re-ignites the yen for ethereal vocals and downbeat tempo music. In 2007, Denali announced their reunion, and siblings Davis continue to collaborate in Glos. Maura voice, as well as the catharsis of the lyrics, are surely one of a kind. They are great live, except the last show I saw them they couldn't find there kapo so they cut it short. I was dissapointed but I got my shirt signed, so its cool. I thought they had a lot of promise and I'm still hopeful for them to get back together and make some new tunes. I thought they had a good sound to them. -The story of how I got into them started when a guy on my b-ball team. He saw my Bjork sticker on my car and asked me if I'd heard of denali. I said no. He told me to check them out because the lead singer(MauraDavis) sounded like Bjork. Just the sound of her voice though. Their music, in my opinion is totally different. But turns out I liked what I heard and saw them in Cleveland both times before they split. I think they split due to Maura's brother. He left Denali to spend more time with his own band. Jerk. :/ Anyway, Maura needs to move on and get her own band again. Well, thats all. Good band. Basically if you like anything about Bjork, especially her voice, then you should like Denali.
