DEFTONES are not so much a band as they are a hyper-dynamic
musical experience. Imagine the world spinning of its axis,
and you'll have a good idea of what these guys sound like.
Or, as lead singer CHINO MORENO says, "It's sweet,
ruthless." With their wicked rhythms, sinister riffs,
speaking-in-tongues vocals and rabid lyrics, the
Sacramento, CA foursome build provocatively on their
Maverick debut album ADRENALINE with the new AROUND THE
FUR. More powerful than their first, it's a record that
consolidates all their strengths--the rhythmic dynamism,
the jarring use of melody, the industrial/rap
undercurrents, "the bracing blend of extremes," according
to the Los Angeles Times--and radically creates its own
wavelength.

------ About the song Xerces performed by Deftones
In the CD booklet it just says
'goodbye, safe, heaven, new
I'll be waving'
etc.
The fact that Chino has not even published the lyrics suggests that he doesn't have any 'fixed lyrics' for that particular part, or maybe that he just doesn't want us to know what he is saying. There is a lot of this sort of things with deftones, for example if we look at the standard-issue 'White Pony' printed lyrics, in many places Chino is obviously singing words other than those in the CD booklet, and on various live recordings he sings different lyrics also. Maybe he has various different sets of lyrics that he sings depending on how he feels. Who knows?
Anyhow, for my two pence worth, I would say that 'New, new world' is probably the closest, but then again whenever I listen to the song it feels like he has made a portomento of 'new' and 'universe' - 'Goodbye safe heave, newniverse, I'll be waving', or he could just be saying 'new, new verse'. Weird.

------ About the song Hole In The Earth performed by Deftones
I think this is a great song, and has deep emotions tied with it. I thought it was about judgement day and having to explain yourself to God.
After looking up the lyrics the message is probably different then I thought. That is a great things about music: that a song can mean different things to any listener.
This is one of my several all-time favorites. As everyone agrees, the vocals are outstanding! The whole album though, (White Pony) is really one story. Listen from start to finish. You'll see. This particular song is near the end, and he has picked up a hitcher. The sexual overtones are heavy, so it's a good bet that was part of the motivation. I think he kills his "passenger" Thus "Change in the House of Flies" the next song. The whole album is describing various murders, maybe only in his head, but doesn't sound like it. Check it out.

------ About the song Beware performed by Deftones
This song is awesome, but I don't agree with it being about consumerism and simple temptation. Deftones often appears to sing about abusive relationships in the eyes of the abuser. I think this parallels this in their normal, metaphorical fashion.
this song strangely, makes me think of the things i've done in the life, when i was coming home a couple of months ago after seeing my girlfriend, i was listening to this song in my mp3 and it felt so strange, deeply inside me, that day was like 1:00 am so i was walking alone the road to my house,in the night... listening to the song and thinking of my girlfriend... can't explain how it felt... so awesome

------ About the song Xerces performed by Deftones
I've been listening to the Deftones for a while and since i can remember, what Chino writes has been unintelligible.
Whether it's what he wrote or not, it doesn't make a difference. It's an excellent song.
He's written a million different things, whether he says it or not is a completely different story.
Everybody has their own idea of what they think he's saying and chances are, all of them are wrong in one way or another.
So everybody quit their posturing and kiddy little arguments.
You're ALL right children. Fight nice.
in hindsight, the whole angel demon love thing comes down to the sex theme. For a demon to have sex with an angel would mean that it would corrupt that being just by the act itself. Angels are pure beings, as are virgins. For a demon to have sex with an angel would be like taking the angel's purity which stems much from a state of innocence. Same thing with taking virginity. when you think about it, A virgin isn't the same after understanding the way sex feels, thus is the corruption of purity and innocence. Especially if he feels guilty about it, then that means that the act itself was corrupt by nature. but oh how sex makes you feel so alive. Aaaaaaah-ah-aaaaaaaaaah

------ About the song Root performed by Deftones
Perhaps Lonnie but this song was released at least 14 years ago (1995 or even earlier as this was a demo song I believe). I'm not entirely sure but I don't think that the immigration issue/problem was at the same height back then as it has been in more recent times. I prefer not to break down the lyrics when listening to the Deftones and just appreciate it for what it is...

------ About the song Passenger performed by Deftones
Always been a tool fan, deftones have grown on me in the past year, but this duo with chino and maynard... amazing. It's got the same soothing sounds or tool's Parabola. Nothing else to say than it rocks.
okay so some of you weirdo peoples are on the right page just not quite there yet.
It is about Chino hating the band members when he wrote it... He came up with Tabs and thought it would sound good for some random b/s that the were working on, but when the mates said "naw that would be no good," Chino wrote this. Came up with new tabs that had a message and chords that meant something.
This is the end means its the end of their friendship and no more Deftones. A hole in the Earth, i think not. His heart. Missing something... love.
and the obvious... I hate all of my friends.
Wow guys you really gotta stop making up rumors...
And i would know this for a fact because i actually happen to know them... I interviewed them but as a friend...
I actually heard what was really going down...

------ About the song Root performed by Deftones
This is a really great song but i dont really know what the song means. I think after careful reading that this song might be about mexican immigrants, i know but bare with me a few parts kinda confrim this, for example "To be forced under I look unto your home, because
We gave our eyes but no one will" this probably means that the mexican sees the american dream house and feels abit envious and maybe the mexican and other illegals built the house or did some type hard labor u know cuz illegals do the jobs that other people dont want to do. "To be judged by one or licked by three and your holes enclose" to be judge by one might be about a governer judging them ,or licked by 3 might be about getting a licking or a beating by 3 patrol units or cops, it also says the holes enclose that could mean the borders are tighting and its getting harder for the illegas to get in as they are no longer welcomed. And finally the song is titled Root maybe refering to chinos ethinic backroung and his roots. I might just be over thinking it but you never know with deftones lyrics as most of them are multi meaning.

------ About the song Digital Bath performed by Deftones
I honestly think this song is about a dude who is trapped in a relationship looking for some distance.. he meets a girl who is completely free from confinements, which he seems to envy slightly.. he wants to experience that, and share his experience with her, so she can see that he can be like that too.. she saw, and was taken away by this ability.. it seems to have humbled her into thinking that she could also maintain a relationship and keep a distance, or quite possibly, that she has fallen in love with this guy.. and he is relieved to watch her realization, which could possibly have been his goal from the very start.. I'm a schizo so this might not make sense to anyone but myself.. lol
What a GREAT imagination you have.I like your version. Even though I could say that he is taking to somebody who´s replacing someone he REALLY loved (I dressed you in her clothes) and he is trying to forget... that´s why he wants to go Far away doesn´t matter where, just far.
i think its about a teenager who's in love with a girl all he can do is be hers he's infatuated with her more dangerous and deeper than obsession even though he knows she's promiscuous girl the only time he feels like she's entirely his is when they're driving disowned by family because he chose her all he can think of is to leave with her get away from the life that he knows will end but is blind and chooses ignorance than to believe she's unfaithful even when its the most obvious so truly it feels good to know your mine

------ About the song Bored performed by Deftones
I think with most of Chino's lyrics you just kinda have to take it to mean whatever you feel it means....or maybe you feel when you hear it...in its entirety the song may not make 100 percent clear sense...but if you allow your self to shape the words into their own meaning....it can make sense....for me it symbolizes a rebirth, stepping away from a life that is "boring" and drenched in solitude...just what it means to me
P.S. Kat, if you don't like Deftones....don't look up their fucking lyrics

Kat has a point actually... Chino's lyrics don't make much sense, even on inspection... but the instrumentalism IS good. This is from someone who saw them before Around The Fur came out... and who was around at the start of Nu Metal...

------ About the song Hole In The Earth performed by Deftones
the theory that there is, quite literally, a hole in the earth near the region of the north pole, which leads into a hollow earth, containing an advanced society.
i'm yet to see it disproved, i'm not necessarily saying i believe it to be a fact, but i wouldn't doubt it.

------ About the song Change (In the House of Flies) performed by Deftones
I love this song (and DEftones.)
I t's on my iPod and I listien to it repeatedly. I think of angels " It's like you never had wings" and vampirism "I look at the cross/ then look away/give you the gun/ blow me away".
So it inspired a story ( Pitch Before Dawn). And maybe this song is about ( could be?) a vampire/demon in love with an angel/human and thinking he (or she) is tainting the one he ( or she) loves? ("I've watched you change into a fly" fits that part.) Did anyone agree with me?
