David Sylvian (from February 23, 1958, Stone Park, Beckenham, Kent <ed.>) began his career as the lyricist, composer and vocalist with Japan, one of the most original and initially underrated British bands of the late '70's' and early '80's. Although for a number of years Japan attracted a devoted cult following, it was not until 1982 that they achieved widespread success with the seminal album Tin Drum Taken from that record, the poignant and reflective "Ghosts" gave them their biggest chart hit, reaching number three in the UK singles chart.
