He was inspired by his Dad’s record collection of the Beatles, Sinatra, Van Morrison and Elton John. He cites the Beatles as his biggest influence, the way their lyrics and memorable melodies conjure up unforgettable songs. "The person who has inspired me the most is Elton John. I love the Beatles, but as I was growing up, I always wanted to play the piano like him. I've never had any lessons, so he has been my only teacher."

David studied music at school and won talent competitions. He played lead roles in musicals both at school and at PACE Youth drama. After attending Uni for a year, David decided to pursue a career in music. He was offered several opportunities – a Musical in London, a young boy band (Arena). He performed in Musicals and sang with bands in Scotland for several years. He also presented 'Inside Out' a children's show on Scottish TV. He was performing with John Kielty and the Martians bands, when he decided to give the Fame Academy show a go. (While acting Romeo he met John Kielty, and after doing some acoustic nights at the Arches in Glasgow in 2002, performing their own songs, they decided to start a band, and called themselves The Martians Band.)

In October David entered the BBC Fame Academy and went on to win over the public vote. He won the show with 3 & half million votes, beating 36,000 other applicants. As part of his prize he signed to Mercury Records in December 2002. He shot his first video at Abbey Road Studios. David's first single Stop Living The Lie, which he wrote when he was 17, was #1 in the UK Charts for two weeks in January 2003. To date, he is the only artist from a reality TV show to have a no.1 hit single with a self-written song.

The record label wanted him to do a Solo Westlife with a team of writers, but agreed to have David record his own songs with Elton John’s band. His debut album, "Seven Years Ten Weeks" which refers to David's seven years of struggling and his ten weeks on the TV show, was released in April and entered the UK album chart in the Top 5. The album was produced by Hugh Padgham, and recorded with Elton John's band; it contains all original material written by David, and some co-writes with Scottish pal John Kielty. There was a Scottish album launch, for the release on 27th April, when David did 7 gigs in 10 hours all over Scotland. In 2003 David and his band did a University tour, the Box Live and Summer XS tours, headlined at the 'Pop on the Rock' music festival in the Channel Islands, and supported Bryan Adams and Elton John. He also performed on TV many times; Top of the Pops, BBC Hogmanay show, the Lottery show, and GMTV. David was a guest presenter on The Saturday Show, the BBC's Glasgow Children in Need appeal, & appeared in on Avid Merrion's ' Bo Selecta' on Channel 4. David left Mercury Records for a Publishing deal with Universal Music in October 2003.
David said "I've loved all the music side of it, it's everything I hoped it would be - the recording, the studio, writing, but the other stuff..........?"[1]

In 2004 he did some performing with rock band the Sham, but now in a move back to his roots , he has returned to the piano again, performing the personal acoustic songs that brought him attention in 2003
He continued to concentrate on songwriting, sometimes alongside John Kielty, and in 2004 and 2005 he played gigs around London and Scotland with rock band The Sham. The Sham included Ed Carlile(drums),Si Jones(guitar), Jake Goslin(keys), John Kielty(guitar) & Jay Mein(bass). The band released their debut single 'Goodbye Baby' in October of 2004 ' on their website and the single achieved #1 on the 7Digital. The Sham did gigs in England and Scotland and headlined at Aberdeen’s hogmanay.

David has worked with new soul singer Nate James for his debut Album, Set The Tone. Nate will do his first European tour in the summer 2006. His first single release in Europe, The Message, co-written with David, is currently playlisted on MTV and radio stations in Italy, Switzerland, France & Portugal upfront of a July/Aug release.

David is a patron for Struan Charity for autistic children and in September he attended the opening of their new school in Alloa Scotland, where he performed a new song he had written for the children, called 'Heart.'

After encouragement from his publishing company and industry people, David decided to return to the Recording Studio for a new solo album. He has been working with Phonic8 productions at Windlesham, Surrey.

In 2006 he is back performing with Scottish mate and writing partner John Kielty, ( John also has his own band The Martians, and his musical the Sundowe in the final of the Highland Quest for anew Musical). their rapport on stage is obvious, with shades of Simon and Garfunkle. In March David put himself out there on Myspace. He says his new album has an 'acoustic indie pop' feel to it..., but most importantly it has some strong melodic songs.
