Dark Blue Lyrics - Jack's Mannequin

Review The Song (106)

I have (I have) you breathing down my neck (breathing down my neck)
I don't (don't know) what you could possibly expect under this condition so
I'll wait (I'll wait) for the ambulance to come (ambulance to come)
Pick us up off the floor
What did you possibly expect under this condition so

Slow down.. this night's a perfect shade of
Dark blue (dark blue)
Have you ever been alone in a crowded room when I'm here with you
I said the world could be burning (burning) down
Dark blue (dark blue)
Have you ever been alone in a crowded room well I'm here with you
I said the world could be burning 'til there's nothing but dark blue..
Just dark blue

This flood (this flood) is slowly rising up swallowing the ground
Beneath my feet, Tell me how anybody thinks under this condition so
I'll swim (I'll swim) as the water rises up, the sun is sinking down
And now all I can see are the planets in a row
Suggesting it's best that I slow down

This night's a perfect shade of
Dark blue (dark blue)
Have you ever been alone in a crowded room when I'm here with you
I said the world could be burning (burning) down
Dark blue (dark blue)
Have you ever been alone in a crowded room well I'm here with you
I said the world could be burning dark blue

We were boxing
We were boxing the stars
We were boxing (we were boxing)
You were swinging for Mars
And then the water reached the West Coast
And took the power lines (the power lines)
And it was me and you (this could last forever)
And the whole town under water
There was nothing we could do
It was dark blue

Dark blue (dark blue)
Have you ever been alone in a crowded room well I'm here with you
I said the world could be burning (burning) down
Dark blue
Have you ever been alone in a crowded room well I'm here with you
I said the world could be burning now there's nothing but dark blue

If you've ever been alone you'll know dark blue
If you've ever been alone you'll know (you'll know)

I think the song is about him being in depression ( dark blue ) he just feels numb. But then he might this girl, who snaps him out of it. When he's in a crowded room, he feels alone. Except when he's with her. & he says " what could you possibly expect under this condition?" meaning that don't expect him to be the life of the party. & "this flood is slowing rising up" meaning it's building up, he feels as if he's drowning. "the planets in a row suggesting it's best that I slow down" meaning that he met this girl & she makes him feel alive again, but he should slow down ( from falling in love ) .

Dark Blue Mood | Reviewer: Justine | 9/15/10

I don't think this song is about a girl insomuch as it is about trying to capture and preserve a mood. It's a glimmer of cautious hope against the tides of life that sometimes flow in our favor but just as often don't. This mood is a different "shade" for everyone ("a perfect shade of dark blue") but universally we can all associate with the feelings it brings. In essence we "box the stars" of life trying to hold on to such sensation. As the song says, "If you've ever been alone you'll know." Even though the mood may vary from person to person, it brings the same feeling for everyone.

A little something for everyone.... | Reviewer: Shasta | 8/28/10

I think this song is up for interpretation in many different ways....that is how Andrew McMahon writes...he is a genius! From Something Corporate to Jack's Mannequin- his songs are personal and personable. He is truly a gift!

Idea! | Reviewer: I <3 this song! | 7/24/10

I agree with the others that it is obviously about two people who are so helplessly in love that they see only each other. Just an idea, maybe dark blue is the color of her (the one he loves) eyes... it could happen. and it would make sense...

To all you who are confused | Reviewer: :) | 6/1/10

To the people who don't know how to interpret the meaning of "I'll wait for the ambulance to come, Pick us up off the floor". It means that they might have been in a Bonny and Clyde kind of romance maybe? Maybe both were on drugs or had mental illness of some sort or maybe even had some disease of some sort? I don't know, just my five cents on the song.

dark bluep-to the extreme | Reviewer: allan | 4/19/10

its all perfection, every bit of the song.that what McMahon sings. about a love so extreme, the lovers are obsessed with each other that their love plunges them to a realm that cannot be understood. They see things differently, what sinks is not them but the love is so strong that sinks them. The unattainable through love becomes attainable. Its quite simple though, its all love and in love they sure are

this night's a perfect shade of dark blue :D | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/17/10

I think this song is about two lovers who are really passionate about each other such that the guy can only see his love while the world revolves around. a PERFECT shade of dark blue seems to refer to how beautiful and pure and wonderful - perfect - their love is. Boxing the stars doesn't refer to them hitting the stars - rather, it refers to them being able to grasp the stars in the sky in their hands, controlling their fate, keeping their love safely in boxes. How the whole town is under water shows them being completely immersed in their love, shut out from the rest of the world. Wonderful song!

Why Dark Blue?? :) | Reviewer: Labani | 2/2/10

I love this song! It's amazing :))

I have read many responses here but I disagree with most of them..I agree with the last one though..
I don't think this is a song about someone under pressure, but yeah it is about 2 people in love...I imagine them in a party or something and then the guy cannot see anyone but his beloved..
"Have you ever been alone in a crowded room when I'm here with you, I said the world could be burning down" - They don't care about anything else outside their own bubble.

Why dark blue? Maybe yeah, it's something that represents calmmness or peacfulness..and it is something that can go with the flood image that runs through the song.

I feel the flood in the 2nd verse stands for the love he feels for that person. It is very overpowering..and strong..

And the last verse "We were boxing the stars, You were swinging for Mars, And then the water reached the West Coast, And took the power lines, And it was me and you, And the whole town under water, There was nothing we could do,It was dark blue". The flood is again a metaphor for the passion they feel for each other..It's overpowering and strong..It made the whole town disappear..the only thing that remained is them..( again goes with the line "have you ever been alone in a crowded room")..It didn't really destory the town or the outside world..Only metaphorically for them..They cannot see anything else except one another.
It is not said in a neagative sense, but it is something they welcome.

The only line I'm still not sure about is "I'll wait for the ambulance to come, Pick us up off the floor" :D But again I think he means this love is so passionate! And might as well kill them! :D

"Have you even been alone in a crowded room when I'm here with you?" | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/27/10

I've thought of this song kinda differently from a lot of the other responses here. I picture it like this:
The guy is standing in a room full of people. Lots of people. But then, he sees this one girl and feels an immediate connection with her. He starts to feel self-conscious- "I have you breathing down my neck." Amidst all of the chaos going on around them, these two are connected in a way. He wonders, "have you ever been alone in a crowded room when I'm here with you?" All he notices is her. And he hopes that all she notices is him. Because these two are feeling this connection, the mood in the room is different for them. It is a shade of "dark blue"- blue representing peace and calm.

I think that the beginning is about a person crashing under presure and the ambulance symbolizes their way of making things better. So the person is in this world of crap while the lover is saying that you can't expect everything to be fine and dandy when your lives like this. So the person is trying to fight the sittuation and is being pulled in deeper. The alone in the crowded room symbolizes the literal sense to me of not knowing or befriending anyone inthis big world. The lover says to him/her that he/she is there and that he is not alone. Then the lover says that the world could be burning dark blue as in their sittuation could be getting worse. After that their life seems to be getting worse and the person can't think just is under this presure of life. Then it describes how they used to be doing so good but life has taken it's toll and the water or the things that engulf us and bring us down has taken their powerlines or their motive. And there was nothing we could do there was nothing that they could have done to stop it from happening. Then the lover says that if you have ever been emotionally alone inside of all this pressure that you know how it feels you know what it's like do guess that's kind of saying that you shouldn't bring others down because you of all people should know what it's like to be engulfed In a emotional disaster.
