Dani California Lyrics - Red Hot Chili Peppers

Review The Song (156)

Getting born in the state of Mississippi
Papa was a copper
And mama was a hippie

In Alabama she would swing a hammer
Price you gotta pay when you break the
panorama

She never knew that there was
Anything more than poor

What in the world does your
Company take me for

Black bandanna, sweet Louisiana
Robbin' on a bank in the state of Indiana

She's a runner, rebel and a stunner
On her merry way sayin'
Baby watcha gonna

Just another way to survive

California rest in peace
Simultaneous release
California show me your teeth
She's my priestess; I'm your priest
Yeah! Yeah!

She's a lover baby and a fighter
Shoulda seen it comin' when
It got a little brighter

With a name like Dani California
The day was gonna come
When I was gonna mourn ya

A little loaded she was
Stealing another breath
I love my baby to death

California rest in peace
Simultaneous release
California show me your teeth
She's my priestess; I'm your priest
Yeah! Yeah!

Who knew the other side of you
Who knew what others died to prove
Too true to say goodbye to you
Too true too say say say

Push the fader, gifted animator
One for the now and eleven for the later

Never made it up to Minnesota
North Dakota man was a gunnin'
For the quota

Down in the Badlands
She was savin' the best for last

It only hurts when I laugh
Gone too fast

California rest in peace
Simultaneous release
California show me your teeth
She's my priestess; I'm your priest
Yeah! Yeah!

California rest in peace

She's my priestess; I'm your priest
Yeah! Yeah!

The lyrics clearly tell a story. If you can't figure out what the meaning is just from listening to the words, you lack basic comprehension skills. Some artists like to wax abstract in their lyrics, but this song is pretty cut and dried.

whatever you feel | Reviewer: tricia | 9/26/12

songs are written by people for whatever reasons...and once it becomes your song to listen to...it is whatever you want it to be...whatever meaning story..feeling it gives ..the lyrics are re-worded and the inspiration is different in your world. Thats the beauty of listening to music! its inspiring...its nice to know what inspired a musician to write a song, but by the time you have listened to it and fallen in love with it..the inspiration is yours then! a song can have a zillion and one meanings!

Meaning is important | Reviewer: Someone Clean | 7/12/12

I think the lyrics of a song are very important for they are a big part of the song's general feeling with their sound and meaning, arguing about the meaning of them is not something bad since it allows us to see other people's interpretation of the song. I also like the beat,
RHCP rock for ever

you people are idiots! why bother fighting on here, or wasting time trying to figure out the songs meaning when you could just notcare what other people say, i mean, everyone has an opinion and not everyone is going to like a song, why dont you forget about the meaning and just enjoy the beat, dance to the flo of the music, take a few minutes from your day to forget about fighting and meanings and just let loose, let your hair down, have some fun, enjoy yourself, sing along. just some advise, :)

the real meaning of this song | Reviewer: is this real life | 5/23/12

Guys this song is a continuation of the story of the girl that was brought up in a verse on Scar Tissue and Californication album from the Californication album. They actually said that themselves. He accidentally kept singing about the same character without realizing it.

Came home late one night from work (2:00am) sat down to watch a movie.
I didn't make it thru the whole movie because I fell asleep.
Later on I was wakened by an interesting video that was playing,
Dani California by the RHCP.
As I focused my eyes to watch the video, I began to laugh at how they were spoofing different artist. Needless to say I love the song and had to download the song and video from iTunes.
I'm not a super fan of RHCP but I do like some of their stuff and by far this best song I like of theirs.
I can't stop singing or playing the video.

Now for all of you who are trying to figure out the songs meaning, your best answer would come from the RHCP themselves.
Why not write them and ask what the song means. Lol

To me, I really don't care. It's one of the coolest songs/video I had the pleasure of enjoying in a long time.

I used 2 like the chili peppers... But now I LOVE them. When I first heard this song I grabbed me straight away! It was love at 1st listen! But then I saw the music video....... That made it 10times more lovable! (If u haven't seen it, check it out!) The chillies are awesome, they have made rock history! Anthony, flea, john + chad! Love them all! xxx

Just for fun | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/28/11

I enjoy this song just for its great melodies and beats. If you want to try and interpret what they mean thats fine, but most people just like a song cause they like it. Not because of uts meaning. Unless of course its something like "Cats in the Cradle." XD

The Fault lines in Cali | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/18/11

The song is also about the fault lines that run through Cali. Meaning a big quake might set off BOTH major faults...{Hence} (Simultaneous Release) and send California sinking in the ocean. (the death of Dani California)...get it.. The Peppers are clever when using double meanings.

Dani California's Last Dance | Reviewer: Phil | 6/30/11

Love the Chilli's, but I liked this song better the first time I heard it...it was called Mary Jane's Last Dance. I'm not saying that RHCP intentionally ripped it off, but don't you think in a studio full of industry people that one person might have put up their hand and said "hey guys this sounds a lot like Tom Petty"...just putting that out there.

Oh, and Sir Psyco Sexy is the chilli's best song..this doesn't even compare.

Dani California's Last Dance | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/29/11

I liked this song better the first time I heard it...it was called Mary Janes Last Dance....I love the Chilli's, but don't you think in a studio full of so clled music experts that one guy would have put up his hand and said "Um...guys i think tom petty wrote this song 15 years ago"
....just saying

RE: "no your retarded" | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/2/11

Okay listen I didn't say that the artist of this song weren't deep. I was simply addressing the fact that people in previous posts were interpreting this song in a very obscure manner.. And I was simply stating the borderline basic idea of the song.. The red hot chili peppers are one of a kind. They're style and approach to art is fantastic.. Creative and charismatic all of they're songs are notably unique. I was only straightening out the people who were misinterpeting the song and it's basic principles. But thanks for bash and calling me an all out hater... They're actually one of my favorite bands!

Wiki:Throughout the song, lyricist Anthony Kiedis laments the early death of Dani, a poor, young Southern girl who eventually lived in California, became a mother and lived a hard, fast, unsettled life.[4] Kiedis has commented that the character of Dani is composite of all the women with whom he has had relationships. The song narrates much of Dani's life, starting with her birth in Mississippi and apparently culminating with her death in the badlands, by a man "gunnin'" from North Dakota, while en route to Minnesota.[5]

Dani first appeared in the 1999 song "Californication", which includes the lyrics "Teenage bride with a baby inside/Gettin' high on information" although the girl's name is not specified. She was next mentioned in the Red Hot Chili Peppers' 2002 single "By the Way" as "Dani the girl". It is also possible that the character is alluded to in the 1999 single "Scar Tissue" from the "Californication" album through the lyrics "Blood loss in a bathroom stall/Southern girl with a scarlet drawl" and "Push me up against the wall/Young Kentucky girl in a push-up bra." Kiedis is quoted as saying: "When this funky groove came up it struck me as a perfect place to actually tell a story. It sort of revealed itself to me that it's been the same character, just kind of developing. At first I didn't realize that I was writing about the same girl."[

no, you are retarded | Reviewer: anonymous | 5/24/11

the red hot chili peppers are the most ridiculously deep band ive ever had the pleasure of listening to. they have honestly shaped my life, and its people like you who make me sick. to interpret this song in the shallow context that you did, is a disgrace to them. even if this song does "mean" that. it means so much more to each individual. and the way anthony sings it, and the words they use allow people open their minds to more then just surface thinking. obviously, you dont understand that.
