Dancing Barefoot Lyrics - Patti Smith

Review The Song (4)

she is benediction
she is addicted to thee
she is the root connection
she is connecting with he

here I go and I don't know why
I fell so ceaselessly
could it be he's taking over me...

I'm dancing barefoot
heading for a spin
some strange music draws me in
makes me come on like some heroin/e

she is sublimation
she is the essence of thee
she is concentrating on
he, who is chosen by she

here I go and I don't know why
I spin so ceaselessly,
could it be he's taking over me...

she is re-creation
she, intoxicated by thee
she has the slow sensation that
he is levitating with she ...

here I go and I don't know why,
I spin so ceaselessly,
'til I lose my sense of gravity...

(oh god I fell for you ...)

the plot of our life sweats in the dark like a face
the mystery of childbirth, of childhood itself
grave visitations
what is it that calls to us?
why must we pray screaming?
why must not death be redefined?
we shut our eyes we stretch out our arms
and whirl on a pane of glass
an afixiation a fix on anything the line of life the limb of a tree
the hands of he and the promise that s/he is blessed among women.

(oh god I fell for you ...)

Another Case Of Someone Else Writing The Song | Reviewer: Longtime | 12/15/10

Patti Smith has always been the beneficiary of someone else who could write a song. She's always attached her somewhat dim lyrics to another's hooks and structure. Although she has had her day, and is being overcompensated in the current epoch, the fact remains: She has never written a song without the help of someone else.

Kudos to her to piggyback efforts on the work of others. Although I was a fan of hers way back in the days, I think she's pretty over-rated. Today, her supposedly "great work" sounds tired. Even with all that help from Kral, Sohl, Lenny Kaye, Springsteen and others...

Patti is one of the "Lady Treasures" of rock & roll | Reviewer: Paul White | 8/8/07

Dancing Barefoot is my favorite Patti Smith song. Theyre's so much "going on" there lyrically; she truly does find her righteous space -among women. She gives you so much to think about throughout the song, especially at the end. Not only is she at her best vocally on this album (Wave), the musicianship of the band really helps kick it all up a couple notches. Check out "Frederick" and her cover of "So You Want To Be A Rock & Roll Star" - both excellent!

I think above all else though, I love her concept for the album liner picture which has Patti standing there (I believe with a dove in hand - alas I've misplaced it!!) with this quote from the poet Rainer Maria Rilke which says: "For one human being to love another; that is perhaps the most difficult of all our tasks, the ultimate, the last test and proof, the work for which all other work is but preparation." If that doesn't say it all, I don't know what does. Thanks Patti Smith for reminding us! God bless you!

Haunting tune from a cutting edge artist that put out a lot of great material. Great music, great lyrics, great vocals -- what more could you ask for?
