But I think the message is more complex than you're hitting on. Our scars come from our pain. We must open our own scars to empathize with others going through pain. Its painful for us to dig deeper into our scars (shed our blood for our friends) but it builds eternal bridges of connection between us and our fellowman and it helps us all heal. While they are not a "christian band", this song is undeniably about Jesus and his forgiveness to humans and is also Dustin professing his Christian beliefs. Some may even consider this a worship song and I would find that understandable. "And there's no greater love than the one who shed his blood for his friends" is a very powerful line about Jesus being crucified that always gives me chills every time I hear it.
