Crack Pipes Lyrics - Sage Francis

Review The Song (15)

[Sage as a kid]
To All them people who said I wouldn't last
Don't make me laugh, don't make me laugh

[Sage Francis]
I'd give a twenty one gunshot salute
With the toy rifle that you bought me but it won't shoot
And all is well because there's been one too many shots
The sterile robots want to talk to me about detox
Stop the presses, there's been an update
Delivered via 1:30 AM phone call
When an only half-informative source talks discretely
Meet me... at the family room on the side of the Intensive Care Unit
Immediately, I carry a tune
The sirens so loud, can't hear my music
Keep free... of negative thoughts, everything'll be fine
We all assume... That it would go back to the way things were
That it would go back to normal soon
Saw the moon in a way that I never seen it before
When I looked up that night into the sky wondering why
Lookin' for answers, guess I ain't asked right
I'm guessin most of y'all out there know exactly what that's like
What that's like, now tell me what's that like?

It's like a whirlwind of emotions that occurs when moms and dads fight
It's like when a girl grins, an emotion of hers
That holds your arm, and grabs tight
Hurl him into the ocean, one of them cold sweat heat flash types
But extreme fluctuations and temperature changes
Have been known to crack pipes...
...crack pipes...crack pipes...

Meet me-- half way and i'll go that extra length just to help your strength
Meet me-- at the AA meeting, needing to take more than 12 steps
Bring me to your hiding place, so I can face your vice grip
I'll chisel every single monkey off your back with this ice pick
Come meet up with me on the sidelines when the game is over just to say hello
Then afterwards, backstage to let me know that you enjoyed the show
And go to grandma's house for Sunday dinner
Sit at the head of the table, take away the fatal flaw
you made the day before, I seen you bleed
Meet me-- on Christmas Eve, we can fight but make up before you leave
Make visits with the rest of those who rest in pieces of my dreams
Meet me at the fork in the road where lost souls get indecisive
Meet me at the crossroads so I can have someone to walk into the light with

i like how the guy says that sage has never done drugs but then goes onto say he's not sure haha. I think music like this from a genuis like Sage because his words hit everyone different. Just enjoy the music and stop trying to be a psych.

sage francis does not or never did drugs, i believe, well im totally ignorant on the facts but i would like to guess this song is about a parent or loved one of his, who prolly did have some kind of substance abuse problems and maybe health issues due to it, and went to the hostipital over them, but as far as sage francis smoking crack. haha if you think that you must be smoking crack. Geeze get educated.

Speak discreetly. | Reviewer: Michael | 12/6/09

I've broken down every line or set of lines in this song, it goes as follows:

"To All them people who said I wouldn't last
Don't make me laugh, don't make me laugh"
This part was in the song to indicate that sage feels that he'll endure anything, and that he'd laugh in anyones face who says otherwise. Its also him as a child, which indicates that this is referencing a childhood event or that since he was a kid he's had this enthusiasm for music.

"I'd give a twenty one gunshot salute
With the toy rifle that you bought me but it won't shoot
And all is well because there's been one too many shots
The sterile robots want to talk to me about detox"
This part is about a person taking shots and developing alcoholism to the point of sterile robots (doctors) talking to him about detox (rehab).

"Stop the presses, there's been an update
Delivered via 1:30 AM phone call
When an only half-informative source talks discreetly
Meet me at the family room on the side of the Intensive Care Unit" This is about being in a state where he suffered from alcoholic poisoning and was being rushed to the hospital to have his stomached pumped, then to begin rehabilitation. "stop the presses" indicates a sense of extreme urgency.

"Immediately, I carry a tune
The sirens so loud, can't hear my music"
This indicates that he uses music to escape from the reality of the world, and that he was trying his hardest to do this, but the sirens from the ambulance was too strong, and held him in reality.

"Keep free of negative thoughts, everything'll be fine
We all assume That it would go back to the way things were
That it would go back to normal soon" thus indicates that he lived and that he and his family all hope that things are like they were before, and that they have to tell themselves that it'll be okay. Its an emotional fight against creating awkwardness between him and his family, at which they are failing at.

"Saw the moon in a way that I never seen it before
When I looked up that night into the sky wondering why
Lookin' for answers, guess I ain't asked right
I'm guessin most of y'all out there know exactly what that's like
What that's like, now tell me what's that like?" this shows that he was at his lowest, looking for answers from the moon, not God, which implies atheism. And how he could be asking for a solution, but never get an answer.

"It's like a whirlwind of emotions that occurs when moms and dads fight
It's like when a girl grins, an emotion of hers
That holds your arm, and grabs tight
Hurl him into the ocean, one of them cold sweat heat flash types
But extreme fluctuations and temperature changes
Have been known to crack pipes...
...crack pipes...crack pipes..." This is the feelings one has when they O.D. on a substance. Then passing that and facing all the emotions of coming to the realization that they almost died. "crack pipes" is a implying that he was the pipe, and that he snapped from all of these sensations and was in the lowest state he's ever been.

"Meet me half way and i'll go that extra length just to help your strength
Meet me at the AA meeting, needing to take more than 12 steps
Bring me to your hiding place, so I can face your vice grip
I'll chisel every single monkey off your back with this ice pick"
Its about family and friends being there for him and supporting him in the small ways that they can. "Chisel every single monkey off your back with this ice pick" implies that he'd do everything that he could for them, like they have. It also implies that, even though they've been loving to him, they've still been cold towards him ever since he was rushed to the hospital due to his alcoholism.

"Come meet up with me on the sidelines when the game is over just to say hello
Then afterwards, backstage to let me know that you enjoyed the show" Once again, a small way to express love to him to let him know that he isn't alone. But still, in an awkward way, since they never say that they love him.

"And go to grandma's house for Sunday dinner
Sit at the head of the table, take away the fatal flaw
you made the day before, I seen you bleed
Meet me on Christmas Eve, we can fight but make up before you leave
Make visits with the rest of those who rest in pieces of my dreams" This is about the tensity from family gatherings, how they cannot look at him the same as before because of what happened. And how the fight and soon make up for it often because of this.

"Meet me at the fork in the road where lost souls get indecisive
Meet me at the crossroads so I can have someone to walk into the light with" This is about having someone to help guide him and so that he won't have doubts with his religion like he did as before. Essentially, having them there so he won't lose his way.

Grief | Reviewer: Grief | 7/1/09

To me this song represents the grief one feels when a loved one dies a sudden and violent death. Albeit from drugs or some other cause. In particular it draws to mind the five stages one goes through in a typical grieving process. The first verse deals primarily with denial "everything'll be fine we all assume that it would go back to normal soon" and ending with anger.

The second verse goes through the last three, being bargaining, depression and finally acceptance.

At least, that's my take on it.

Sage | Reviewer: lyrical headspin | 11/14/08

The song is about him overdosing. Sterile robots are doctors and Detox is the first step to rehab. Its him having to face his family being sober and to have to handle and make amends for all of the damage he had caused them

For the dude that didn't get the crack pipes I think it has something to do with him happening to mention real PIPES cracking like heating the house kind As per the heating and cold influxiation conenction and then him realizing he said crack pipes and having a moment of memory about his past addiction and another moment of consideration......

I think.

death in the family | Reviewer: youknowimrite | 1/11/08

I'm pretty sure its about the deathe of his mother. Regardless, its a death of a loved one. From the beginning that's obvious. 21
gun salute. Its like a movie in words. Intense. It goes from the call at 1:30 in the morning. To the rushing over to the person's house. To the ambulance ride. Him having thoughts of them dying. Asking for why its happening. All the emotions he goes through in the process. Then it goes to them saying they want them there every second that the missed and they're regretting not spending as much time as they could have. I'm not sure wuts up with the crack pipe. I heard he was addicted to crack early on in his life, so maybe the death of his mom helped him kik crack. I mean death can really change the way u look at life. LJMF

I love this song, man | Reviewer: Ted | 12/4/07

I'm not a giant hip hop fan, like the reviewers above me, but how anyone can relate to this song, and how real it is blows my mind every time I listen to it, which is often. I give it 10/10

Well written | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/3/07

This song appeals to a large audience because regardless of your background, you can find a way it relates to it. Though I'm not a fan of the genre I definitely enjoy this song.

Well Constructed | Reviewer: Ben | 11/15/07

I'm not a big fan of hip-hop / rap, but I do listen to a little of everything. I think Paul has reached the height of his lyrical mastery in this song. It deals with so many different issues, and I believe that any person capable of interpretting this song on multiple levels can find some way to find a direct link to themselves within it.

This song makes me want to cry, scream, and weep for joy all at once. It is amazing. Truly one of the best songs ever written imo.
