Countdown Lyrics - Rush
Review The Song (7)
Lit up with anticipation
We arrive at the launching site
The sky is still dark, nearing dawn
On the Florida coastline
Circling choppers slash the night
With roving searchlight beams
This magic day when super-science
Mingles with the bright stuff of dreams
Floodlit in the hazy distance
The star of this unearthly show
Venting vapours, like the breath
Of a sleeping white dragon
Crackling speakers, voices tense
Resume the final count
All systems check, T minus nine
As the sun and the drama start to mount
The air is charged
A humid, motionless mass
The crowds and the cameras,
The cars full of spectators pass
Excitement so thick you could cut it with a knife
Technology...high, on the leading edge of life
The earth beneath us starts to tremble
With the spreading of a low black cloud
A thunderous roar shakes the air
Like the whole world exploding
Scorching blast of golden fire
As it slowly leaves the ground
Tears away with a mighty force
The air is shattered by the awesome sound
Like a pillar of cloud
The smoke lingers high in the air
With the eyes of the world

USA? | Reviewer: Craig | 7/1/10
What's all this American stuff? How about being proud of being apart of the human culture that accomplished the unbelievable of sending people into orbit? Remember it took a CANADIAN band to sing about an American achievement.
Highly underrated song! | Reviewer: Kirk Bradford Myers | 6/11/10
You can enjoy "Subdivisions" on the radio all you want...in my opinion, Rush truly saved their best on "Signals" for the last track! The best songs in the world are the ones that capture a moment, evoke an emotion, and take you to the very place the creators of the song intended, and "Countdown" fits that mold perfectly...more than perfectly! Most musicians' basic instincts when trying to create a song similar to this one is to build the tension during the first verses, launch the rocket during the first chorus line, and follow through with the journey to space. Only a genius band like Rush could turn this formula cleanly on it's head, building the tension right through the first chorus line and launching the rocket in the MIDDLE OF THE SECOND VERSE...and still make it work spectacularly! Definitely one of Rush's best, one they have been hard-pressed to top as far as telling a coherent story with music as well as lyrics and making you actually feel it goes. Only "Red Barchetta" and "Xanadu" come remotely close.
One Problem | Reviewer: Chris | 7/26/07
The song was written before any of the shuttles were lost. It was a powerful song at the time, and the disasters have made it even more so.
Awesome | Reviewer: GMan | 7/14/07
Being a person who actually knew people who died when Challenger exploded, this is a fitting tribute to the men and women who aspire for the stars and are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice. America is behind our Space program, we need to make the politicians aware of this.
Goodbye Columbia! we miss you | Reviewer: Kevin | 6/5/07
I miss Columbia-- she was a good ship.
So long- and thanks for all the memories, and God bless the families of the seven we lost in her.
One of their best | Reviewer: Steve | 5/19/06
I remember when this event occurred. The song brings it all back.
Strong powerful song that evokes the emotions all over again. Makes you so proud of being an American.
Listen to the song, read the lyrics, and absorb the intensity that RUSH brings.
