Pearl Jam Corduroy Lyrics

Last updated: 08/29/2012 12:36:01 PM

The waiting drove me mad...
You're finally here and I'm a mess.
I take your entrance back -
Can't let you roam inside my head.

I don't want to take what you can give
I would rather starve than eat your bread.
I would rather run but I can't walk
Guess I'll lie alone just like before.

I'll take the varmint's path
Oh and I must refuse your test
A-push me and I will resist
This behavior's not unique.

I don't want to hear from those who know
They can buy, but can't put on my clothes.
I don't want to limp for them to walk
Never would have known of me before.
I don't want to be held in your debt.
I'll pay it off in blood, let I be wed
I'm already cut up and half dead
I'll end up alone like I began.

Everything has chains, absolutely nothing's changed.
Take my hand, not my picture, spilled my tincture.

I don't want to take what you can give
I would rather starve than eat your breast
All the things that others want for me
Can't buy what I want because it's free
Can't buy what I want because it's free
Can't be what you want because I'm...

I ain't s'posed to be just fun
Oh, to live and die, let it be done.
I figure I'll be damned - all alone like I began...
It's your move now...
I thought you were a friend, but I guess I, I guess I hate you...

Vedder's 'Have A Cigar' or 'Workin' for MCA' | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/29/12

It's about Vedder's hatred for the business side of the music industry. He just wants to make music, doesn't care about the money and all the 'advice' he's getting from "those who know" the business...what he needs to do to make money at it.

It's about a guy who gave everything that was precious to him to win a girl and please her selfish family. Joined by his best friends, his precious porcelain doll betrayed him in a brutal way. Once he was broken, she revealed the truth and left him feeling the harsh truth of abandonment.

from my prespective the songs about someone who's been really hurt. and hurt by a loved one. so he tries to build this wall between him and that person and the rest of the world. he becomes bitter and sad, but he doesn't want to admit he's sad. he's just...going...mad.

Quotes | Reviewer: derek | 12/23/10

"It is about a relationship but not between two people. It's more one person's relationship with a million people. In fact, that song's almost a little too obvious for me. That's why instead of a lyric sheet we put in an X-ray of my teeth from last January and they are all in very bad shape, which was analogous to my head at the time." - Eddie Vedder

"Yeah, that song was based on a remake of the brown corduroy jacket that I wore. I think I got mine for 12 bucks, and it was being sold for like $650. The ultimate one as far as being co-opted was that there was a guy on TV, predictably patterned, I guess, after the way I was looking those days, with long hair and an Army T-shirt. They put this new character on a soap opera, so there was a guy, more handsome than I, parading around on General Hospital. And the funny thing is, that guy was Ricky Martin." - Eddie Vedder

I think the chick knows what she wants from Vedder now he's become a rockstar. And if it was something between the two he'd pay the debt in blood rather than having a fake relationship. Nothing's changed everything has spoiled brat! lol

Stay true to you | Reviewer: JorEL | 3/30/10

One of PJ's best songs. I blast it loud and sing at the top of my lungs. Especially when he sings I would rather starve than eat your bread. Yea! To me it's about self perservation. It's about not letting anyone push you around. Push me and I will resist. I sometimes will bite the hand that feeds so don't put your hand too close to my mouth. My teeth are sharp.

This is what Corduroy is about | Reviewer: Ed | 6/27/08

This song is about a chick who cant figure out what she wants from you, when you know you want her. Something happens, (she has a boyfriend and makes out with you) maybe repeatedly and she pulls away for weeks at a time and you feel like you've wronged her. Finally, you give up while she is "away" and the song takes place when she returns to make amends.

Fame | Reviewer: Brendan | 8/17/07

The pressures of fame on Ed, how he has to resist it, no matter what's offered, how he has to be himself no matter what happens. How all those people can buy his corduroy jacket in department stores, but they won't be him. This song, to me, is the willingness and battle of self-preservation, to not succumb to the pressures and false glorification of fame. To not satisfy anyone or their demands, except your own, to not care what anyone thinks, to stay true to yourself.
