Well my name's John Lee Pettimore
Same as my daddy and his daddy before
You hardly ever saw Grandaddy down here
He only came to town about twice a year
He'd buy a hundred pounds of yeast and some copper line
Everybody knew that he made moonshine
Now the revenue man wanted Grandaddy bad
He headed up the holler with everything he had
It's before my time but I've been told
you never come back from Copperhead Road
Grandaddy ran the whiskey in a big block Dodge
Bought it at an auction at the Mason's Lodge
Johnson County Sheriff painted on the side
Just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside
Well him and my uncle tore that engine down
I still remember that rumblin' sound
Well the sheriff came around in the middle of the night
Heard mama cryin', knew something wasn't right
He was headed down to Knoxville with the weekly load
You could smell the whiskey burnin' down Copperhead Road
I volunteered for the Army on my birthday
They draft the white trash first,'round here anyway
I done two tours of duty in Vietnam
I came home with a brand new plan
I take the seed from Colombia and Mexico
I just plant it up the holler down Copperhead Road
And now the D.E.A.'s got a chopper in the air
I wake up screaming like I'm back over there
I learned a thing or two from Charlie don't you know
You better stay away from Copperhead Road

Review about Copperhead Road Perfect Example | Reviewer: Chris | 9/18/2007
This song is a perfect example of why Ray Charles liked country music, it has a good beat and a really good story. Plus it gets stuck in your head, I find myself singing it all the time.
From the first time my son heard this song, he was hooked. He loves anything about the historic old south. This song has a story that sticks in his head.
My husband and I have always loved the song "Copperhead Road". About 2 weeks ago I was taking my 6 year old son to school. We were trying to find something on the radio and as usual for that time of morning nothing could be found. I put my Steve Earle cassette in and my son fell in love with the song "Copperhead Road". Every time we get in the car my son plays the song over and over. I got that tape for Christmas of 2004. The tape has been played more in the last 2 weeks than the whole time I have had it. I am going to have to buy a new tape before long because mine has started to drag. The song is one of the best story songs around. Most song artist can sing story songs but I do not believe that any other artist could have sang that song as well as Steve Earle.
