Copeland Lyrics

"Strip away all the fluff. Does the song still speak the
same way when performed with just a voice and a single
piano or single guitar?” This is Copeland’s test of a well
written song. Lead vocalist and principal songwriter, Aaron
Marsh was bred in the diverse Florida music scene where he
started the band with his close friend, bassist James
Likeness. During their search to finish off the line-up,
Aaron found a kindred spirit in Maryland native guitarist
Bryan Laurenson, with a mutual appreciation of quality pop

------ About the song Chin Up performed by Copeland

To me, "You'd break your neck to keep your chin up" means that you'd do anything to stay strong. To keep your face and pride together so as not to show that anything's wrong as you are going through your memories or reliving your past. So as not to show just how much you wish you could go back to where things were before things got so messed up, before you lost yourselves along the way.

------ About the song Chin Up performed by Copeland

pretty sure the lyric in the second verse is 'and the drops come in a snail race down to your neck' refering to tears slowly running down your face, which is why the line 'but you were smiling somehow' contrasts so well, in the same way someone moving in a frozen day would.

it's just a beatiful way of wording a simple act.

i like both of those meanings, but i got a different one also. he is guiding the listener through a story, sort of like j. alfred prufrock would. he starts by saying close your eyes and look at your past ("watching a strange show"), which make you smile. the picture you have in your head is one of perfection and you want to keep it like that so you make everyone still, but that doesnt change the fact to everyone is moving in the real life.

then he gets to the chorus and is talking about how we visit our past before life was so complicated and messed up ("back to where we started, losing who we were"), but we should only dwell enough to keep us going ("tip a bottle back to keep us filled up" not get drunk). the next part he is talking about how we all try so hard to to stay happy that sometimes it bites us back and "breaks our neck".

the next part is saying that even in discomfort the past will still hold you up and keep your mind else where (notice that the snail raced down to your neck, implying that it had started higher and slowly moved down, but you were not paying attention and it seemed like it raced down.)

that what the song means to me at least.

I agree, this is an incredibly pretty song but I got a different meaning from it. He talks about how "maybe we should tip a bottle back to keep us filled up" because all of us are so empty and in the song, he takes us "back to where we started losing who we were"...keeping your "chin up" is perhaps a sad reference to our conceit and ego which compels us to do stupid things (like "break your neck") to protect it.

Love is a Fast Song | Reviewer: David
------ About the song Love Is A Fast Song performed by Copeland

My sister has spoken with Aaron of Copeland, who writes the songs, and he says though some of the band members are Christians, the songs are not written as Christian songs. Though it's true that songs are meant to be interpreted multiple ways, if we are discussing here what it was written with the intention of communicating, it would be the love between the writer and his lover.

Whether or not the 'miracle' is a child or love is debatable, but I think it fits the entire song much better if it is translated as 'love'. The issue of pregnancy is unrelated to the rest of the song, and Aaron is good enough of a writer to not have such a clear 'error' in the writing.

The miracle is one that she would be 'ashamed' of because of how much love has changed, i.e. love=money for the woman and love=body for the man. True love is certainly something to be ashamed of if this is the context by which you are comparing it to.

Other than that, the song is pretty much self-explanatory-it's beautiful and extremely powerful when the tender lyrics are contrasted against the very unCopeland heavy guitars and hook.

Sad to see such a good band be done, but I look forward to what else Aaron has up his sleeves.

I never knew people interpret the lyrics in those ways... I guess I'm just a bit surprised.

I remember the band mentioning that this song is something like about how every person experiences love and puts meaning into love differently. And it doesn't matter if one's love is "a fast song", "not like we used to hear in those old songs", or "not like yours", because when you experience love, and it feels real, then it can't help but take over your whole world. (Okay, that very last part is my interpretation, but I think the chorus is pretty explicit about it).

Umm guys, Copeland is not a Christian band, they've said it so many times themselves (even in the old FAQ section of their website and in the old message board). The members in it might be Christian, yes, and they seem like really good people. But like other bands, they also write (wonderful) songs about love, and I think they may not necessarily refer directly to God in every song.

This song has nothing to do with pregnancy or god. The miracle inside of her is her love for him and how they love each other, how it's supposed to be, not like people who say they love each other for sex or money.

One of the most beautifully epic songs. | Reviewer: T-Fizzlies
------ About the song Love Affair performed by Copeland

I absolutely love this song. Especially the instrumental bit and lyrics at the end. That part is so gorgeous. "Like all the fools who play it smart. Lose your head just for your heart." I couldn't agree more wholeheartedly.

On a side note, I think it's funny that you're using this song for an essay in your music class. I used Copeland's "She Changes Your Mind" for an essay in my first music class. That was right around the time you posted too. Anyways, over a year later, hoping you did well on it lol.
