Cleaning This Gun (Come On In Boy) Lyrics

Performed by Rodney Atkins

(Marla -Goodman/Casey Beathard)

The Declaration of Independence
Think I can tell you that first sentence
But then I'm lost
I can't begin to count the theories
I've had pounded in my head that I forgot
I don't remember all that Spanish
Or the Gettysburg Address
But there is one speech from high school
I'll never forget

Chorus:

Come on in boy, sit on down
And tell me 'bout yourself
So you like my daughter, do you now
Yeah we think she's something else
She's her daddy's girl, her mama's world
She deserves respect, that's what she'll get, ain't it son
Now y'all run along and have some fun
I'll see you when you get back
Bet I'll be up all night
Still cleaning this gun

Well now that I'm a father
I'm scared to death one day my daughter is gonna find
That teenage boy I used to be
Who seems to have just one thing on his mind
She's growing up so fast it won't be long before,
I'll have to put the fear of God
Into some kid at the door

Come on in boy, sit on down
And tell me 'bout yourself
So you like my daughter, do you now
Yeah we think she's something else
She's her daddy's girl, her momma's world
She deserves respect, that’s what she'll get
Now ain't it son, y’all go out, have some fun
I'll see you when you get back
Probably be up all night
Still cleaning this gun

Now it's all for show ain't nobody gonna get hurt
It's just a daddy thing, -n- hey, believe me, man it works

Now Come on in boy, sit on down
And tell me 'bout yourself
So you like my daughter, do you now
Yeah we think she's something else
She's her daddy's girl, her momma's world
She deserves respect, that’s what she'll get
Ain't it son, ya'll run along and have a little fun
I'll see you when you get back
Probably be up all night
Still cleaning this gun

Ha ha

Now son now y’all buckle up and have her back by 10, uh lets say 9...30
Drive safe

stupid parents | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/3/11

A song about threatening to kill a boy is fun? How about teaching the girl right from wrong and how to be strong. Threatening a child with a gun doesn't teach anyone respect. It's illegal. How is it gonna make the girl feel when the boy says, "I don't wanna date a girl with a whacked out old man." Then it's the dad who hurt her, not the boy. I know a man who makes boys sign bullets before they leave on the date with his daughter. That girl has more boys trying to climb into her pants just to show how brave they are. She's become like the haunted house everyone dares each other to enter on Halloween. Yeah, certainly great parenting there. Instead of trying to be "cool" try thinking about the effect your actions will have on your child and do the right thing. The only way to protect your daughter is to teach her about respect. I am the mother of a teenage daughter. This song is parenting FAIL!

This is the funnest song! Having raised a daughter and having been a daughter I find great humor in a MAN realizing what dog he'd been in youth. The lesson goes both ways. Also my daughters father sounds just like this. HA!

As a father of a teenage daughter in rural Tennessee, I can agree with every word of this song. I want my daughter to respected by who ever she is with and not be treated wrong. If not, then that person should understand what the outcome of the situation could be. Just something to think about. I don't want to harm anyone, but when it comes down to my daughter, a farthers love can change things. Great Song, Mr. Atkins, keep up the great work.

completely accurate song | Reviewer: 2girldad | 10/11/10

I have 2 daughters and found this song to be 100% accurate in the way I feel as a father and how I will greet all of my daughters' boyfriends. I didn't build up a gun collection for nothing; no one lays a hand on my daughters without the fear of possibly losing it. Great song.

Sounds familiar | Reviewer: Annie | 5/29/10

Boy oh boy does that sound like my Dad-and now, or course, like my husband! It sure does make a boy think first before taking liberties with someone else's daughter. And, no, we don't condone just shooting folks, but it's a funny song just the same.

Grandma agrees! | Reviewer: LaVonne | 10/25/09

Of course, we know the song is not about killing someone. It's about reality in the dating world and parents protecting their daughter from the boy who thinks he just invented it. I'm buying two of these cd's to give to my son-in-law's for Christmas. I have a fourteen-year-old granddaughter and a seven-year-old granddaughter. Their fathers need a copy of this one and should have it playing when the boy comes to pick up their daughters for that first date.
Keep up the good work with reality lyrics in these troubled economic and moral times!

listen to a song before you "review" it | Reviewer: Sean | 5/23/09

ABOMB, you're an idiot. If you actually listened to Cleaning this Gun, you'd know it's not about anyone killing anyone else, it's about a father protecting his daughter. Like any other father, he is imparting a little "friendly" advice to the boy before he takes out his daughter in a date: Treat my little girl right, or face the consequences. You clearly don't understand a thing about music, ABOMB, and obviously don't have any daughters. This is a great song, and I agree with every word he sings.

wow.... | Reviewer: ABOMB | 11/16/08

how many "red necks" acaully kill another person...... hmmm?? now how many gangsta kill ppl. do you have nothing better to do than find lyrics to songs and comment how they suck. do us a favor and kill yourself, and some nutrients back to the soil, the only good thing you can do with ur life.....

Interesting | Reviewer: Shelley | 7/13/08

That song is nothin but the truth. Because boy do take advantage of a girl and dont care what the girls thinks about it. They'll do absolutley anything and I'm not jokin. My dad heard the song and felt the exact same way.

GREAT WORK!!!

With some of the boys that have tried to date his stepdaughters, I don't blame Rodney in the least bit for this song; call us "gun-toting rednecks" all you want, but sweetheart, this is Tennessee and some boys today are crazy. I'm 22, and have known BOTH of the girls all their lives. I myself, have even stood up to some of the guys asking them out and told them no. Having hidden the youngest one from a friend of mine, and had to use force to make him leave her alone after she told him about ten times in a parking lot that she wasnt interested, then yes I understand this perfectly. Funny thing is, I can see Rodney sittin on his front porch with the lil dog, waiting on the girls to come home, and yes, even cleaning his gun while doing so. Kudos to Rodney on this song!
