Clannad Lyrics

(from Atlantic Records)

Taking their name from the Gaelic language of their native
Donegal - an abbreviation of "an clann as Dobhar," meaning
"a family from the town land of Dore" - Clannad have woven
a unique and timeless sound from the various strands of
music which surrounded them as they grew up in the remote
coastal region of Gweedore.

In their earliest days, the members of Clannad were - like
typical teenagers - influenced most immediately by the pop
charts. They would master Beach Boys, Stones, and Joni
Mitchell covers, More...

Review about Clannad songs
The Haunting Caislean Oir | Reviewer: Frank Olmsted
------ About the song Caislean Oir performed by Clannad

As so many of Clannad's songs are, Caislean Oir is hauntingly beautiful. It is wonderful in Gaelic, but it is very much worth reading the lyrics in English to gain the full richness of this song.

------ About the song Caislean Oir performed by Clannad

Funny, when I was a little girl, I always thought that also; that the sun rays were taking a soul up to heaven. This is one of my favorite songs but I never made that connection in the meaning of the song. Makes total sense. Go hálainn.

------ About the song Caislean Oir performed by Clannad

Hi there,

The lyrics mean:

Around Us,
Bright stars in the night,
The sea is quiet
And there is quiet in the wind
The quiet sea
is asleep in the wind

Down in the valley, the valley of fog
The kingdom of the sun in Caislean Óir*
The sea is quiet and there is quiet in the wind
The quiet sea is asleep in the wind

Magic to entice people before us
Bright lights of Caislean Óir
The sea is quiet and there is quiet in the wind
The quiet sea is asleep in the wind

Around Us,
Bright stars in the night,
The sea is quiet
And there is quiet in the wind
The quiet sea
is asleep in the wind

*Caislean Óir means 'Castles of Gold'. I was half brought up in the Gaeltacht area and I was told when I was younger that the phrase relates to an old belief of people in the area that sunrays through clouds where stairways to heaven. The Castles of Gold where like paradise and lost loved ones lived there, so the locals would think of them fondly and watch them over the sea.

Cheers :)

Rock, not rod | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song Siuil a Run performed by Clannad

The line should read, 'I'll sell my rock, I'll sell my reel, I'll sell my only spinning wheel.' It's not about fishing guys, its about the tools the lady uses to spin thread. A 'rock' is a distaff, a reel is used to wind the thread into skeins and the spinning wheel...well...that should be self explanatory.

------ About the song Siuil a Run performed by Clannad

I like this song. I was glad to find the lyrics to it, especially when I found the Englis translation. I could tell that it was being sung mostly in the Irish Gaelic tongue, but I really wanted to know what was being sung! Anyway, this page is really helpful.

------ About the song Theme From Harry's Game performed by Clannad

My mother insisted in playing this song on her funeral.
Evenso wanted my brother this song on his funeral.
In 2003 and 2007 my both sisters had this song on theis funeral.
When I'm working on my computer I often have this song playing in the background. Your song gives me the strength of going on.
Thank you very much.
