Carole King Child Of Mine Lyrics

Last updated: 04/10/2013 10:19:02 AM

Although you see the world different than me
Sometimes I can touch upon the wonders that you see
All the new colors and pictures you've designed
Oh yes, sweet darling
So glad you are a child of mine

Child of mine, child of mine
Oh yes, sweet darling
So glad you are a child of mine

You don't need direction, you know which way to go
And I don't want to hold you back, I just want to watch you grow
You're the one who taught me you don't have to look behind
Oh yes, sweet darling
So glad you are a child of mine

Child of mine, child of mine
Oh yes, sweet darling
So glad you are a child of mine

Nobody's gonna kill your dreams
Or tell you how to live your life
There'll always be people to make it hard for a while
But you'll change their heads when they see you smile

The times you were born in may not have been the best
But you can make the times to come better than the rest
I know you will be honest if you can't always be kind
Oh yes, sweet darling
So glad you are a child of mine

Child of mine, child of mine,
Oh yes, sweet darling
So glad you are a child of mine

Child of mine, child of mine
Oh yes, sweet darling
So glad you are a child of mine

Wedding dance | Reviewer: Cindy | 4/10/13

My son asked me to find a song for our mother -son dance at his wedding. This was the perfect song. My intention was to let him know how proud I am to be his mother, even though we are so different. The result was making everyone cry and my son realizing my true feelings. We have never been closer. What a wonderful gift for both

Mother Son Dance | Reviewer: Yvonne | 12/1/10

Carole King was the first live concert that I attended with my then boyfriend (now ex-husband). She was always and still is one of my favorite artists. Her songs are stories put to music. Both my sons are getting married in 2011 and I have been searching for months for the perfect song for a Mother/Son dance. I was starting to panic as the first wedding is next month! Last night I decided to go back to the music I love best...Carole King, Elton John, Billy Joel just to name a few. The minute that I saw "Child of Mine", I knew it was it. I listened to the song over and over and sent my choice to my eldest son!

Very special song | Reviewer: Nicholas | 9/15/10

My mom is a big Carol King fan. She told me that when I was born, this song was playing in her head. I know that a lot of people say this, but the entire song talks about our relationship; especially the last verse. My parents were poor when I was born (The times you were born in may not have been the best) and my mom said that whenever she held me, all her stress went away
(But you can make the times to come better than the rest). I'm very much a "wear my heart on my sleeve" kind of guy and I'm honest to the point of bluntness (I know you will be honest if you can't always be kind). My mom and myself can't even listen to this song around each other because one or both of us inevitably starts tearing up when we think about the ups and downs we've shared together. If I ever meet miss King, I'll have to thank her for this song. Oh, and this will be the Mother & son dance at my wedding, my mom told me I don't have any say on the matter lol

Memories | Reviewer: Debra | 8/10/10

We sang this song in a 6th grade chorus program. I sang it to both my kids when rocking them as babies. They're 25 & 30 now. I could not remember who sang it so I decided to google it today. I'm a huge Carole King fan so I was surprised it was her song!

Special Song | Reviewer: Lou Limehouse | 6/17/10

I was introduced to this song by my son's band director after Jason and his best friend died in a car accident in 1998. It was such a comfort and blessing to me to be able to listen to the sweet lyrics and music during my times of grieving. Eventually I returned the CD to the band director. I've seen the ads for the concert tour with James Taylor (another long time favorite artist) and was researching tour dates and the fact that you could enter a contest and request a song to be played at a concert. I thought, "what better place to hear the song than a live concert?" and at my request too! So, I've entered the contest, but regardless of whether I win or not, "The Ode Collection" will soon be in my hands again, as I've determined to buy it this week!!! Thanks for such a precious and loving song.

My mother sang this to me as a child (especially when she was feeling the frustration of parenting) and now I sing it to my children. The song never fails to remind me how much love I have in my life.

The perfect song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/2/10

I was driving home from work today when this song came on the radio. It was perfect timing since I was trying to think of a song to dedicate & sing to my daughter at her wedding reception. A Child of Mine has so much meaning that I began to cry as I listened to the lyrics. I knew then that God had meant for me to hear this song at this time and that it will be what I will sing to my daughter on her wedding night.

Beautiful Child of Mine | Reviewer: Baabee | 10/23/08

Almost three years ago, my daughter became pregnant with her fourth child. Her first was a miscarriage and her two boys were 11 and 13 at the time. They were not too happy about mom having a baby. Through tests my daughter found out that there may be something "wrong" with the baby and agreed to have an amniocentesis. Knowing what could eventually happen, we prayed and were overjoyed when the results were positive that her baby girl would be fine. On the way home one day, another daughter and I were listening to the car radio when Child of Mine played. Without a word to the other, we were both sobbing because no matter what, Desiray would be our child. And she definitely is! She has won the hearts of her brothers - she could get away with sin and they are sooo protective of her. They were present at her birth and were so overcome by her arrival that the attending nurse stopped what she was doing to give the 11-year old a hug. They wouldn't leave their sister's side. She is such a beautiful and smart two year old. And I thank God everyday for her as well as my other grandchildren.

I have been a Carole King fan for 40+ years, but only heard this song a few years ago. I was widowed 14 years ago, and our only child, a daughter, is getting married this year and I will give her away. We will play this song as I walk her down the aisle. I can't think of a song that expresses what I feel better than this. Waterproof mascara will be a must on the wedding day!!!

amazing | Reviewer: Steve | 11/18/07

Although I am reasonably familiar with Carole King's work, I somehow missed this song until I picked up "The Ode Years". It began playing on my car stereo, and it brought me to tears. It is exactly what I wanted to say to my oldest child, with whom I've had a tempestuous relationship over the years. It's amazing how someone else's words can really express what's in my heart!

Proud Army Mom | Reviewer: Mama K | 5/21/07

This song makes me think of all my children, but it has a special meaning when it comes to my oldest son Daniel. Right now Daniel is in Iraq serving our country & I'm missing him very much! He met a wonderful girl in the Army & they recently got married (secretly!) & I just recently found out, but I know she makes him very happy & I know marring her before he left for Iraq makes him happy, so even though I was devestated that I wasn't there for my first-born son's wedding- just knowing he's happy makes it all better. I'm so incredibly proud of the man Daniel has become, even though it hasn't always been easy- if not downright hard! I love you, Daniel.

This song reminds me of all my children, but I'm especially thinking of my oldest son, Daniel who's in Iraq serving our country. I know it has been hard for him, but he always manages to do great! He recently, secretly got married to his wonderful new wife, Toni- who is also in the Army. They really seem to complete each other. I was devestated that I was not there for my first-born son's wedding, but knowing how happy this makes him seems to make it all worth it. I'm so incredibly proud of the fine young man Daniel has become. I love you, Daniel.

Tonight was the first time I heard this song. What a wonderful, wonderful song. As I was driving this song came over the radio as a dedication to a ladies daughter's, this being Mother's Day. As I sat listening, I thought of my own living daughter studying to become a Doctor and my deceased daughter, who would be 23 this November. Our love for our children never stops no matter where they are or what they are doing. I have printed these lyrics so I can give them to my daughter to let her know just how much I love her each day and that I am never far away. I was so blessed with two beautiful daughters and I know I was to hear this song tonight. My deceased daughter was a light beyond lights. Both of my girls were well behaved and knew their dreams would come true. My youngest, is walking with God, her best friend, and yes, to my sweet darling, I am so glad that you are a child of mine. Thank you Carole King for what my heart wants to say each day.

a beautiful memorial | Reviewer: j flaherty | 2/13/07

A while ago, a neighbor passed away from cancer. She was a beautiful person, wife, and mother of two little boys and she was in her early 30's. She knew she was dying and she had the wherewithall to set up pretty much her own memorial service, so her family wouldn't have to perform that painful task. Friends and family all said their lovely pieces that they had created with so much dignity , love, and sweetness. After it was all said, my neighbor had arranged with the pastor to play this song ,"Child of Mine",through the church speaker system, but instead of Carol King singing and playing it, it was my neighbor herself with her guitar in her own marvelous voice. Her two little boys were in the front pew and they got to hear their mommy do it for them once more. It was incredibly beautiful and unbearable touching for all of us in the church, and the boys seemed to enjoy it with their little faces genuinely smiling. They were only about 4 and 5 at the time, and it must've been a very different experience for them at that age than it was for the rest of us. It was wonderful that there was such a perfect song for her to give to her children. I just wanted to tell you about this tender memory and how special this song has become for me. "Thank You" to Carole King--you, too, are remarkable, needless to say .
