Cats in the Cradle Lyrics - Cat Stevens

Review The Song (67)

Cats in the Cradle
by Harry Chapin

My child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch, and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away
And he was talking before I knew it and as he grew
He said, "I’m gonna be like you, Dad,
You know I’m gonna be like you"

And the cats in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin home, dad, I don’t know when,
But we'll get together then, Son,
You know we'll have a good time then.

My son turned ten just the other day
He said "Thanks for the ball, Dad, come on lets play
sponsored links
can you teach me to throw?" I said, "Not today,
I got a lot to do" He said "Thats okay"
And then he walked away but his smile never dimmed
And said "I’m gonna be like him, yeah
You know I’m going to be like him"

And the cats in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin home, dad, I dont know when,
But we'll get together then, Son,
You know we'll have a good time then.

Well he came from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say,
"Son, I’m proud of you, can you sit for a while?"
He shook his head, and he said with a smile

"What I'd really like, Dad, is to borrow the car keys
See you later, can I have them please?"

And the cats in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin home, Son, I dont know when,
But we'll get together then, Dad,
You know we'll have a good time then.

I’ve long since retired, my son's moved away
I called him up just the other day........
I said "I'd like to see you if you don’t mind"
He said "I'd love to Dad, if I could find the time.
You see my new jobs a hassle, and the kids have the flu.
But It's sure nice talking to you, Dad,
It's been sure nice talking to you........"
And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me
He'd grown up just like me,
My boy was just like me..............

And the cats in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin home, Son, I dont know when,
But we'll get together then, Dad
We're gonna have a good time then.

Cat's in the Cradle by Harry Chapman | Reviewer: M | 8/30/14

Since there has been no correction to the song's author since 2006, I can only assume there is a shortage of admin time, or this page is here to incite negativity. I'm sure Harry, not Cat, would be glad to read how so many people get what the song is about....

Great song for my kids to undersatnd me | Reviewer: Paul W | 12/23/13

I've been humming this song in all its various forms through my head for a long while. Never been a cat steven's follower and never picked his songs on the old juke box. But when i was told that i was mumbling some old crap i just typed the words in to the old internet and up came the lyrics, printed them out and shoved it in their faces.Satisfaction and after a while some appreciation.

Some of you are too young I suppose to remember what a cat in a cradle is, it's the string you use to make different patterns by hand, takes two at the last part to make the cradle. Anyway the song is about not spending time with your child, and it goes on and on.

The last couple of comments notwithstanding, I suggest that anyone who still holds the misguided view that Cat Stevens had anything to do with this song should take a look at the comments posted on the page for Harry Chapin Cats in the cradle. There you will find the views of people who know what they are talking about.
I also suggest that the people who administer this site remove this misleading page. It only seems to stir a lot of resentment and anger which would irk Mr Chapin if he was still with us and would surely annoy Mr Stevens.
Give credit where it's due, this is Harry Chapins song and should not be on Cat Stevens page.

Obviously a Problem? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/10/11

I cherrish the late 60's and 70's. I went to both of these performers concerts on more that one occassion. I do know two things 1)Harry wrote and sang "Cat's in the Cradle" and 2) He is turning in his grave listening to the annomosity being spilled over such a simple mistake. Take a chill pill!-GQ

You Guys All Need to Chill | Reviewer: William | 6/25/11

It's about the lyrics, and great lyrics they are! I am 61 and I know exactly what the song is about. A word of advice to you younger folks: Chill, watch the language, and take plenty of time with your children while they are young; you will regret it if you don't but will be greatly enriched if you do. Take it from someone who knows.

No one cares if you smoke dope or not, it's the dumb ppl that can't afford their pot, like gas stealing teenagers, who are unemployed in their very late teens or unmotivated unemployed dickheads! Otherwise smoke up and don't steal from your nice neighbors and friends for your pot. So just party on, like I said nobody cares what you smoke or how much as long as you can afford it!!!!!

Wow, such big words you use. You know they say that people who must use foul language in a conversation are only showing their lack of intelligence, and are insecure about themselves. So I'm guessing that you must belive that everything you see on the internet must be a fact, because when i did my search it came up with Harry Chapin, Cat Stevens, Ugly Kid Joe,Guns n Roses and Bon Jovi.
The dumb can be taught ,but there is no cure for stupid. And really, who are you to judge anyone?
By the way retarded means slow, dumb means that you dont know any better, and stupid means that you know better but you don't care.
Maybe you need to relax a bit, take alook in a mirror and judge yourself as you do others, and see what improvements you can make.

Cat Stevens or Harry Chapin | Reviewer: Kyle Faber | 4/11/10

My wife claims that Cat Stevens recorded this, the tune was in my head this morning and I beleive Harry Chapin, like riding in his taxi when he's stoned. My wife claims that she has on the song on an old vinyl LP or cassette tape. She drove that Celica with the deck blaring.

Little boy blue landed on the moon | Reviewer: Paul | 3/19/10

Can any one produce a vcd or tape recording. Back some time in the late 1980's the song cats in the cradle played with the first moon landing by a little boy who did it for real with a customize jet back in 1958. The airforce wanted to give him credit for his fantastic true life tales.
I saw it about 4 times on tv and pass out with a repress memory. Some political freak black out the nation not to reveal it. I would like to have a copy of the video to play on youtube.

Not a sheep like everyone else | Reviewer: HateDumbPeople | 3/13/10

FUCKIN OPEN YOUR BRAIN AND DO A SEARCH ONLINE OR ANYWHERE FOR THE ALBULM IT WAS ON. ALL U FUCKING MORONS WHO CLAIM IT WAS CAT ARE AS SMART AS A GOD DAMN 2ND GRADER AND NEED TO BE SHOT!
"Duh, the song is called Cats In The Cradle, therefore it must be sang by Cat Stevens" WHY IS EVERYONE SO RETARDED??? WAAAY TOO MUCH POT SMOKING IN THE 70s!!! IF YOU CANT PROVIDE THE ALBULM, IT WAS NOT ON AN ALBULM OF CAT'S.
THE REASON WHY IT WAS MISLABELED ON LIMEWIRE OR ELSEWHERE IS BECAUSE OF ALL YOU MORONS! BLIND LEADING THE BLIND!!! FUCKING SHEEP!

IT WAS FUCKING HARRY CHAPIN!!!! AND THATS THE END OF IT! WOW I NEVER KNEW A GENERATION COULD BE SO DUMB, MY MOM THOUGHT IT WAS CAT TOO, WTF IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE FROM THE 70s???

purformed by many over a long period | Reviewer: meowza | 2/9/10

to be honest i thouhgt the song was called cats robbing cradles.i also vaguely recall it was performed by the great felix as he was crooning for his soon to be spouse of half his age.regardless i may be mistaken.that song will be forever in my mind and a reminder that sometimes its what we dont do that counts.

re: illegitmate child | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/27/09

I guess the song is all about a father who can provide everything to a son except a quality time with him... and a son who is becoming very much like his father... and the son who fathered a son and don't have time with him... and the story goes on and on...
