Cassandra Lyrics - Abba

Review The Song (5)

Down in the street they're all singing and shouting
Staying alive though the city is dead
Hiding their shame behind hollow laughter
While you are crying alone on your bed

Pity Cassandra that no one believed you
But then again you were lost from the start
Now we must suffer and sell our secrets
Bargain, playing smart, aching in our hearts

Sorry Cassandra I misunderstood
Now the last day is dawning
Some of us wanted but none of us would
Listen to words of warning
But on the darkest of nights
Nobody knew how to fight
And we were caught in our sleep
Sorry Cassandra I didn't believe

You really had the power
I only saw it as dreams you would weave
Until the final hour

So in the morning your ship will be sailing
Now that your father and sister are gone
There is no reason for you to linger
You're grieving deeply but still moving on
You know the future is casting a shadow
No one else sees it but you know your fate
Packing your bags, being slow and thorough
Knowing, though you're late, that ship is sure to wait

Sorry Cassandra I misunderstood
Now the last day is dawning
Some of us wanted but none of us would
Listen to words of warning
But on the darkest of nights
Nobody knew how to fight
And we were caught in our sleep
Sorry Cassandra I didn't believe
You really had the power
I only saw it as dreams you would weave
Until the final hour

I watched the ship leaving harbour at sunrise
Sails almost slack in the cool morning rain
She stood on deck, just a tiny figure
Rigid and restrained, blue eyes filled with pain
Sorry Cassandra I misunderstood
Now the last day is dawning
Some of us wanted but none of us could
Listen to words of warning
But on the darkest of nights
Nobody knew how to fight
And we were caught in our sleep
Sorry Cassandra I didn't believe
You really had the power
I only saw it as dreams you would weave
Until the final hour

I'm sorry Cassandra
I'm sorry Cassandra

Just came across these explanations of Abba's song "Cassandra". Until now I didn't know what they were about, and I want to say a big thankyou to everyone on this page who posted explanations. Now the song makes complete sense.

cassandra.. | Reviewer: Polyxena | 10/21/10

in my childhood, i loved abba, but i've never heard of this song until now. a friend and i are writing a novel about the trojan war, in which she plays the part of cassandra, and i play the part of her younger sister, polyxena. Cass prophisied that Troy would fall, but because of Apollo's Curse, nobody beliveved her. Sure enough, Troy fell. Her father, brothers and sisters were killed. Cass was raped by Ajax II and then she was taken away as a war prize for Agamenmon. It's a heart shattering story, and I can just picture poor Cass, looking out from the ship at her destroyed city, wishing that people had listened to what she'd said.

Abba's song "Cassandra" | Reviewer: cassandra | 5/17/10

Very heart-wrenching song and lyrics. I never knew of it till today. Putting the record straight, Cassandra, however, was not lost from the start. She received her prophecy not from Apollo but from a serpent, the ancient knowledge he also had access to. Apollo and his kind, like the Trojans, had further eastern origins. The Trojans were more ancient and to Cassandra, Apollo was cunning with little nobility; this is why she spurned him. Yes, she was cursed by him. The Trojans did not believe her because they were falling under a spell of an awakening mentality that brought down the entire Near-East. She was like the last of her kind, similar to the original Delphic or Pythian oracle. Abba is right to say they are sorry and I thank them for that.

Trojan War, huh? | Reviewer: Luigifan | 7/29/09

Blind Guardian's "Under The Ice" is about the same woman. Turns out that she married a jerk named Agnemnon (yes, THAT Agnemnon), and when Agnemnon was forced to kill his own daughter, the murdered girl's half-sister, Queen Klymnestra, showed up and murdered him. Sadly, Cassandra, who was totally innocent, also got butchered in the bloodbath.

My god, I never knew the meaning behind this song untill a few minutes ago. For those of you that don't know its about a girl called Cassandra who lived during the Trojan War. She could see the future but because she declined Apollos advances, he put a curse on her gift so it would be rendered useless and nobody would believe her !!!! Now listen to that powerful song again, you can almost picture the entire scene ...FANTASTIC
