Carnival Lyrics - Natalie Merchant

Review The Song (13)

I've walked these streets
A virtual stage
It seemed to me
Make up on their faces
Actors took their
Places next to me

I've walked these streets
In a carnival
Of sights to see
All the cheap thrill seekers
The vendors & the dealers
They crowded around me

Have I been blind
Have I been lost
Inside myself and
My own mind
sponsored links
Hypnotized
Mesmerized
By what my eyes have seen?

I've walked these streets
In a spectacle of wealth & poverty
In the diamond market
The scarlet welcome carpet
That they just rolled out for me

I've walked these streets
In the mad house asylum
They can be
Where a wild eyed misfit prophet
On a traffic island stopped
And he raved of saving me

Have I been blind
Have I been lost
Inside myself and
My own mind
Hypnotized
Mesmerized
By what my eyes have seen?

Have I been wrong
Have I been wise
To shut my eyes
And play along
Hypnotized
Paralyzed
By what my eyes have found
By what my eyes have seen
What they have seen?

Have I been blind
Have I been lost
Have I been wrong
Have I been wise
Have I been strong
Have I been
Hypnotized
Mesmerized
By what my eyes have found
In that great street carnival
In that carnival?

So very sad | Reviewer: Mary | 12/10/13

Aileen lived a horrible life no human should have to live through. Why are people so cruel to each other? Why do families sexually abuse their children. From age 9 or younger she had been abused in every way possible. It's no wonder she did what she did. When society just looks away and does nothing to help a child being abused then scociety should feel responsible when that child grows into a murder. No one helped that child! She was just a little kid and having a kid at 13, come on social service where were you! Ya think that's NORMAL! The words to this song is how she felt and saw her life. Just cruel and sad. I do feel bad for her. She knew nothing else but being used.

im a musician..not yet heard this song,,but researched god bless aileens scenario,an feel sick inside as her story n truth comes about.aileen found comfort thru this song, this girl, woman, child fought very hard to live an survive,to the breaking point where she could no longer make people understand that it was others who drove her to this corner.lowerd and giving in, into nothing but empty endness..as i type there are cases far worse with more unexplanatory no reason twice, four, six, multiple outcomes ,but get 20yrs b n b with clemency to end..get peace of mind natalie, bless you aileen...male dominance dont rule, next album for you..misburn if ya read well

Aileen Wuernos | Reviewer: Deidre | 9/25/12

Aileen was a survivor although she was a product of severe physical and emotional abuse from a very tender age. Living in a wrecked car in the snow in woods at the age of 13. All she needed in her life was love, support and trust but instead she was betrayed and made a mockery of. Her life story is a tragedy and whatever she did wrong, is because of her circumstances..... May Aileen rest in peace as well as her victims and their families. This should be a wake-up call to our present society with it's children and youth at risk because of their current circumstances.....

"Well put ... excellent interpretation and descriptions" ... | Reviewer: El Cuervo | 3/24/12

As we all go through life, it seems this marvelous singer/song writer has captured what a lot of us see, feel, experience, ponder ... the list just goes on.

So, it seems we all go through "trials" ... yet as we "realize" introspective moments, it's good to know we are not alone in questioning "the why's" of this life.

But, PLEASE, ALWAYS remember & DON'T EVER forget ... hang on, keep the faith (whatever you believe in) ... don't give up, we should try to look for the good in each day.

"Every day is a GOOD day; Some are just better than others ..."

screwed | Reviewer: Tracy | 1/31/12

RIP Aileen, this song was fittin for her. Society screwed her and nobody would believe her b/c of her background, just push her aside...she was literally screwed over by dirty cops all for the all mighty dollar...un fuckin real...this pisses me off and am glad the truth is out...she is now free!!!

Aileen W documentary | Reviewer: Jeannine | 12/10/11

Just as James mentioned below, I also just watched the same documentary and was interested in the lyrics. I just keyed in a few words of the song in a google search and it brought me here. My heart goes out to Aileen and the victims and their families.

The Community | Reviewer: Joanne | 9/27/11

I live in a diverse community that runs the entire demographic of age and income. What shocks me is the number of "throw-away teens",,,more now than ever. People divorce and the step father or mother moves on to an all-encompassing relationship, and/or the new person doesn't like the child...they seem to land in my home as friends of my teens. These are times that reflect the streets as illustrated so beautifully in this Natalie Merchant "Carnival".

Aileen Wuornos: The Selling of a Serial Killer | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/23/11

R.I.P. Aileen. No matter what some people think, this woman was forever black eyed a product of a broken home and she only wanted one thing in life... and that was to be loved. "Have I been wise To shut my eyes And play along" that one quote says it all, finally she gave up all hope of ever getting a fair trial so she just said what everyone wanted her to say which was "I'm a serial killer"

variations on a theme | Reviewer: James Isaak | 5/18/11

I just watched the same documentary on Ayleen W. and couldn't quite make out the lyrics as they were playing the closing credits so I came here. It kind of took me back a little to find that the same experience brought all three of us to this site and I too found the words to be quite haunting against the background of what I'd just seen. I couldn't help but think of the parallels between her living as an outcast in the woods as a thirteen year old and finding herself as an outcast on deathrow thirty years later. A very sad story. At the same time, I'm continually amazed by people like Natalie Merchant who have developed their gifts to be able to capture such profound experiences so beautifully. Absolutely beautiful.

Aileen and the song | Reviewer: Sean | 3/18/11

My god what Susan has wrote is exactly what i thought after watching the documentary, yes she did some terrible things but she is a product of her enviroment and upbringing, put her into a stable family and im sure she would of grown into a different person. I feel for the victims of what she done but i do feel sorry for her.
RIP Aileen.
Great song by Natalie.

Aileen Wuornos | Reviewer: Susan Giammarino | 11/1/10

There was a documentary on this weekend about Aileen Wuornos & she requested that this song be played at her wake after her execution.
When you read the lyrics, man it reads like it was written for her.
Regardless of what people think I think she wa a product of her environment & society & had she been born into a different family "setting" (especially with the fact that her grandfather was also her father!)
I really don't think she would have ended up on the streets & prostituting herself @ 14 years of age. She didn't stand a chance from that moment on. In a way, I feel sorry for her.

Great song | Reviewer: Rodrigo | 11/20/09

I love this song! I have it taped, it is so great (and long)...It is old, isnĀ“t it? I discovered, yesterday, the name of the person who sings (and the title of the music).
And the song reminds me "fashion", "people walking and showing clothes"!

Angola | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/25/08

Staying in Lunada was a great opportunity but at the same time a lot of depression existed, but I will never forget the people there and the poverty in which the children had to live with, which reminded me of my youth before computer games where anything found in the street would do, and thereby the children had a Carnival - I heard this song there for the first time and have many great memories of it since ........
