Known as Mr. Country Gentleman, Carl Smith was one of the
most popular honky tonkers of the '50s, racking up over 30
Top Ten hits over the course of the decade. Smith was also
able to sustain that popularity into the late '70s, during
which time he had a charting single for every year except
one. Smith had a talent for singing smooth ballads which
polished the rough edges of hardcore country. Nevertheless,
he could sing pure honky tonk with the best of them, and
his hardest country was made tougher by the addition of a
drum kit. Smith was one of the very first country artists
to regularly perform with a drummer, and though it earned
him criticism at the time, the hard-driving sound of those
up-tempo numbers proved to be influential. Smith also

------ About artist/band Carl Smith
It's hard to say what causes some one to be attracted to a certain artist. For me it was a combination of lyrics and arrangement-'the sound' and being a small town country boy starting out in the early '50's to explore the world, Carl's message in music resonated with me. Even today, with so many copy cats mouthing the same quotidian refrains Carl Smith's works are still sineqau non in the country genre.
Why he would voluntarily squelch one of the most fantastic voices in the music business while yet in his prime is beyond comprehension. There will be no more like him in our time-or ever.
Carl, Marty, Jim and Johnny were the best and still can outsing today's 'stars'! | Reviewer: roseofnuevo
------ About artist/band Carl Smith
I grew up on country music and Carl Smith, Marty Robbins, Jim Reeves and Johnny Horton were my all time favorites....they could (even today, if all were alive) sing circles around the so-called 'country' singers....Carl, Marty, Jim and Johnny put their heart into a song, they didn't just get up on stage, make a lot of noise to try to cover up their inadequacy of little or no talent. They sang from the heart and put feeling into it....and the songs had a melody, unlike today's 'songs' that are just people up there talking with something similar to music as a background. Carl was one of the best and I wish country would go back to what it was and not this poor excuse for a 'remnant of country' that it is.

I grew up lisiting to Carl, he was always a favorite. I do get to see him and hear him sing on a new TV station that features mostly country artist from the 50's 60's and 70's. I am so glad he is still singing.
How can I get a copy of this song. I need a CD with this song for my husband. He will be 76 in August and I have been trying to get this song by Carl Smith. I would like to have any additional christian songs. Thanks, Joanne
'Would like to suggest that you credit Tillit Sidney Teddlie, a Church of Christ Minister in Dallas Texas for writing this song. Also, you might want to compare your version of the lyrics with the original, also available online if you Google the title and/or composer's name. I doubt that Mr. Carl Smith would want to claim credit for a song he didn't write.
I WOULD LIKE TO BY THE CD. COULD YOU PLEASE EMAIL ME AND LET ME KNOW WHERE I CAN PURCHASE IT.
