Review about Captain Jack Captain Jack | Reviewer: Andrea | 9/15/09 The character in the song is such a tool. He wants to be cool but he's still a tool. I love it. Billy manages to sum this guy up in a serious way, yet still make fun of him. Amazing song writing. I remember my mother playing this record when it came out in '73, and wondering why the man in the song still picked his nose - even as a grown up. He's 21 and his mother still makes his bed. He also, in my opinion, has a great voice and great skill on the keyboard. I am sure that some who read this will think this is a bizarre analogy, but I think his style of singing is a cross between Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley. He posesses a signature sound, that is recognized immediately. B.J. has the ability to make you feel what he is trying to convey through his lyrics. A combination of cool words and melodies like Sinatra, and at times the hard, grinding rock and roll vocals like Elvis. Captain Jack | Reviewer: miranda | 7/8/09 In my opinion this song really speaks to me; It shows how the character in the song obviously has a lot of money cause he can aford heroin and cockaine and fancy clothes but the thing that he lacks in his life is exitement and thrill; it seems as if life has become one long ballad of saddness and self-pity. The line "Your sister's gone out, she's on a date and you just sit at home and masterbate" shows how the character doesn't really care that his sis is having fun and he would rather do that the see her off or ask how it went. He is unquestionably a great lyricist and the melody seems perfect. Now I know there aren't Billy Joel fans out there but he really proved himself I feel. His success is no accident. It reminds me of the skill of "she's only a woman" which has heartache written all over it and even "piano man" and even the upbeat "sometimes a fantasy"-- he fuses an upbeat feeling and a sad feeling simultaneously. He created irony and substance where maybe that is lacking today a bit. You always understand his lyrics-- you can actually decipher them-- and he always tells a story. I remembered when my friend died tragically on his motorcycle at 25 and I get chills telling this story but when his friends sang his favorite song and the lyrics from that song "bottle of white and bottle of red" it brings tears to my eyes running down my face as I write this. I can't say that was one of my favorites but at that moment, nothing seem more right and they sang with gusto and cheer at a bar in Forest Hills and well, the tears keep coming. Listen, in fourth grade Glass Houses was my album of choice and it still holds up. He is a gifted man and I have no problem with his massive success and riches. Sometimes I guess it's more cool for me to say I love David Bowie or The Stones and U2 and Dylan and I do, but let's give a hand to Billy for making some songs that clearly stand the test of time and even songs later like "Matter of Trust"-- that's obviously a man capable of great lyrics and melody. Can we please get more of that today!
