"Can't Stand Me Now" is the first single from The Libertines' eponymous second album. The song was their biggest hit and peaked at #2 on the UK singles chart.
The song also received some exposure in the US; WFNX in Boston debuted the song by playing it twice back-to-back even before its official radio airplay release.
The promotional video for the song was filmed at one of the band's gigs at the Kentish Town Forum at the end of 2003 and was directed by ex-The Jesus and Mary Chain bassist Douglas Hart.
The song was written by Carl BarĂ¢t & Pete Doherty with Mark Keds (also known as Mark Myers and credited on this track as Mark Hammerton) who was previously in bands such as the Senseless Things, The Wildhearts and Jolt.
Carl has said in an interview that he used to buy his bandmates harmonicas for Christmas, and towards the end of the song, Pete is heard playing a harmonica.
The song was also featured in the third episode of the Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood, "Ghost Machine", in 2006. It is featured in the EA Sports game Rugby 2005. It also features on the UK version of SingStar Vol. 2.
In May 2007, NME placed "Can't Stand Me Now" at number 13 in its list of the 50 Greatest Indie Anthems Ever.. NME also named the song as the best track of 2004. In October 2011, NME placed it at number 26 on its list "150 Best Tracks of the Past 15 Years". From Wikipedia
An ending fitting for the start
You twist and tore our love apart
Your light fingers threw the dart
Shattered the lamp into darkness it cast us...
No, you've got it the wrong way round
Just shot me up and blamed it on the brown
Cornered the boy kicked out at the world,
The world kicked back a lot fuckin' harder now...
If you wanna try, If you wanna try
There's no worse you could do (oh oh oh)
I know you lie, I know you lie
I'm still in love with you (oh oh oh)
Can't take me anywhere (I'll take you anywhere)
You can't take me anywhere (I can't take you anywhere)
I'll take you anywhere you wanna go!
Oh, you can't stand me now (No, you can't stand me now)
You can't stand me now (Oh, you can't stand me now)
You can't stand me now (No, you can't stand me now)
You can't stand me now,
You can't stand me now!
Have we enough to keep it together?
Or do we just keep on pretending
And hope our luck is never ending
You tried to pull the wool, I wasn't feeling too clever
And you take all that they're lending
Until you needed mending...
If you wanna try, If you wanna try
there's no worse you could do (oh oh oh)
I know you lie, all you do is make me cry
And all these words they aint true (oh oh)
I can't take me anywhere (I can't take you anywhere)
You can't take me anywhere (I'll take you anywhere)
I'll take you anywhere you wanna go!
Oh, you can't stand me now (No, you can't stand me now)
You can't stand me now (Oh, you can't stand me now)
You can't stand me now (No, you can't stand me now)
You can't stand me now (No, you can't stand me now)
You can't stand me now!
You can't stand me now!
You can't stand me now!
No, you can't stand me now!
You can't stand me now!
You can't stand me now!
No, you can't stand me now!

Broken love song | Reviewer: Bosiegirl | 5/7/12
I think this is one of the saddest songs ever written, and I can't listen to it easily. Two troubled souls who can't get past their problems, despite it being obvious to a blind man that they love and need each other. The hardest thing you'll ever learn is how to love and be loved in return...

i definitely feel that this song is about their breakup.
i think it's pete & carl, and their relationship that makes libertines so special from other bands. it makes me so sad that they're not together anymore.
wish the libertines would reunite
The world kicked back a lot fuckin' harder... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/16/09
I love this song. I've seen Dirty Pretty Things & Pete Doherty Live and I wish I could see The Libertines, I am hoping for a reunion so much!!
The rawness off this song is amazing, one of the reasons why I love The Libertines. The lyrics and vocals are always just so raw and beautiful.
Of course Pete wrote this | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/7/09
Uh, Pete did write quite a bit of this, haven't you seen the Newsnight interview? It's credited to Doherty, Barat, and Hammerton (Keds) on the album that Pete had no control over the lyric credits on.
Get with the program | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/27/08
Just for the record, this song was written by Carl Barat & Mark Keds who used to sing with the Senseless Things. Pete Doherty had nothing to do with the writing of this song! Mark Keds is friends with Barat and also a former heroin addict. Doherty's relationship with Carl may have influenced the lyrics but Pete had no part in the writing of this song or lyrics
terrific song | Reviewer: kingleon 99 | 10/29/08

Don't blame the drugs | Reviewer: Pete C | 3/18/08
I'm not condoning drugs, I never would, but to all those who say the band could have been so much more if it wasn't for the drugs, you are wrong.
These songs would never have been so good if it wasn't for their love/hate relationship (caused by the overuse of drugs).
We never would have had this song for starters if Doherty wasn't taking Heroin.
The Libertines :( | Reviewer: Hans | 11/5/07
The song's way bittersweet... what an awesome band they were and to think what they could've done had they remained together. Stupid drugs. Anyway The Libertines will always remain in music. <3 Pete Doherty is a genius when it comes to delivering the lyrics. I love the song to death.
:( | Reviewer: tara | 11/1/07
this song makes me so sad
to think of what could have happened if the band has stayed together
theyre songs were pure genius
its awful what drugs can do to such a good relationship
love the band :)
especially pete, what a legend x
right then | Reviewer: Danny | 8/24/07
i luuv every song the libertines av dne bt this 1 is the best, it jus explains ow the both of them were towards th end, pete has his problems bt wen he does wat he does best he i genious, n i dnt think there is many ppl better thn him, these two were best friends and the song is sung with passion, amazing song from an amzing band.
just shut me up and blamed it on the brown | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/17/07
what can i say. this song is full of passion. the break up of the closest friends. why because of the brown. makes me cry
Quality Song indeed | Reviewer: Iainandgreg | 8/8/07
This is possibly the best song in the world. It captures the ending of the relationship running between these two song-writing geniuses over there musical careers in this band The Libertines. It incapsulates the break up to a tee, describing how Pete kinda robbed Carl with his *Quote* "Light fingers through the dark, that shattered the light and the darkness that cast us" *De-quote-ify*.
If you listen really carefully, you can just hear Pete Doherty sniffing a bit, which just shows us how emotionally involved Pete Doherty is with his music. Not only is he a musical genius, hes a musical genius with feelings. That ammounts to 2...yes 2 musical geniuses merged together genetically, like a lab-rat in a New York dungeon/laboratory. ok...we mabye took the piss a tad there but anyway were a bit bored..trust us..we could write for days on this song..
ahemm....NME editors please email...not like that nob before us though. Way Way, Your mother.
o yeah this is a good song | Reviewer: angel_babybit@hotmail.com | 8/6/07

Probably the most public band collapse song ever | Reviewer: neutron | 7/16/07
This is a current and future classic, full of acrimony, angst, bitternes and yet still delivers the absolute message that these boys were fucking great pals destroyed by trainspotter fuel. Compile a playlist with the likes of the Sex pistols' 'Pretty vacant', Nirvana's 'She hates me' plus a bit of Morissey and the like then grab some Stella and enjoy at the expense of your neigbours!
wt the hell?! | Reviewer: Libsgrrl666 | 4/26/07
cn i jst say tht whaay is a tw*t. judgin music by the person singin it is crap. u shud b ashamed. go set fire to urself. >:( anyway, its a gr8 song, n i think tht, yeh sure, the guy has a few personality problems bt tht dnt interfere wiv the music..
