Can't You Hear Me Knocking Lyrics - The Rolling Stones

Review The Song (2)

(M. Jagger/K. Richards)

Yeah, you got satin shoes
Yeah, you got plastic boots
Y'all got cocaine eyes
Yeah, you got speed-freak jive

Can't you hear me knockin' on your window
Can't you hear me knockin' on your door
Can't you hear me knockin' down your dirty street, yeah

Help me baby, ain't no stranger
Help me baby, ain't no stranger
Help me baby, ain't no stranger

Can't you hear me knockin', ahh, are you safe asleep?
Can't you hear me knockin', yeah, down the gas light street, now
Can't you hear me knockin', yeah, throw me down the keys
Alright now

Hear me ringing big bell tolls
sponsored links
Hear me singing soft and low
I've been begging on my knees
I've been kickin', help me please
Hear me prowlin'
I'm gonna take you down
Hear me growlin'
Yeah, I've got flatted feet now, now, now, now
Hear me howlin'
And all, all around your street now
Hear me knockin'
And all, all around your town

One of their best songs. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/16/11

Regarding the above post by Mike, it's definitely "plastic boots." "Y'all got cocaine eyes" is more than one person. I don't think it's specifically to one woman in that part. Allegedly, Mick Taylor was knocking on the door while the others were doing blow and didn't hear him. He said, "Can't you hear my knocking?" and they wrote the song. (That's what I've heard.)

He's prowling around..."I've been kickin'" sounds like he's withdrawing off of cocaine or some drug. On the other hand "kicks" means "the sudden stimulation provided by strong drink (or certain drugs)". IOW, getting one's kicks. Whatever the meaning, it's definitely about being on drugs and a feeling of desperation.

It's a great song that some people think is underrated, but both the song and the ablum Sticky Fingers is under 100 on top lists of guitar songs and best albums. But they never played it live until decades later. Being that they had these extra musicians on tyhe studio recording, it would have been more difficult to get those extras on stage for it to sound as good. I'm not sure why they didn't play it live.

Mick Jagger – lead vocals
Keith Richards – electric guitar, backing vocals
Mick Taylor – electric guitar
Charlie Watts – drums
Bill Wyman – bass guitar
Ian Stewart - piano
Rocky Dijon – congas
Bobby Keys – saxophone
Billy Preston - organ
Jimmy Miller – percussion

Great song by the Stones. I have listened to this song many times and I think that in the beginning verse it is plastic boobs not plastic boots. Meaning a girl with breast implants. After all why would she have satin shoes and plastic boots at the same time.
