Brothers On A Hotel Bed Lyrics
Artist(Band):Death Cab For Cutie
You may tire of me as our December sun is setting
'Cause I'm not who I used to be
No longer easy on the eyes
These wrinkles masterfully disguise
The youthful boy below
who turned your way and saw
Something he was not looking for
Both a beginning and an end
But now he lives inside someone he does not recognize
When he catches his reflection on accident
On the back of a motor bike
With your arms outstretched trying to take flight
Leaving everything behind
But even at our swiftest speed
We couldn't break from the concrete
In the city where we still reside
And I have learned
That even landlocked lovers yearn
For the sea like navy men
'Cause now we say goodnight
From our own separate sides
Like brothers on a hotel bed [x4]
You may tire of me as our december sun is setting
'Cause I'm not who I used to be

Review about Brothers On A Hotel Bed
Meaning | Reviewer: James | 9/19/2008Its about one guy, looking back on being young and not taking the time to see change as its happening, rather looking at the past and present many years on.
it talks of a man, who feels the same as when he was probably a young man but his body isn't matching the way he feels.
To the people who think this is about homosexuals, you really don't get the music at all, the part; "like brothers on a hotel bed" refers to himself and his younger-self, because they're so alike, they're like brothers. get it yet?
When is a Death Cab song ever completely literal? | Reviewer: writerbynite | 7/21/2008
I always took this song to be sad as well. Its about someone who is with someone and realizes that neither of them are the same, time has changed him, and the relationship. Most people who have one thing for a long time want something else, land locked lovers yearn for the sea, earth and sea being opposites...say goodbye from opossite sides, obviously these two people are so seperate and this person just wants to feel free. This is all my opinion.
"Like" .... "like" .... get it? | Reviewer: Exeterite | 7/13/2008
PEOPLE! "Like" means, metaphor, analogy, simile, etc. Not hte actual thing. It doesn't matter to whom this song may apply, and the writer doesn't appear to care or he would have offered other clues. The song is universal because every last one of us must grow old (or face the alternative). Anyone can apply the sexlessness that follows a lack of intimacy and waning attraction-- gay or straight. In the face of that universality, why settle for the minutiae of particularity?

You guys have brothers on a hotel bed all wrong. When I have to get a hotel with my brother, we sleep on the same bed if we have to, but far apart. We're not cuddling or anything. That's what the part about "Brothers in a Hotel Bed" means.
When they go to sleep, they're not holding each other. Just sleeping on separate sides of the bed. It's a very sad song, if you ask me.
a metaphor | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/3/2008
i personally find it hilarious that some people have interpreted it as a song about homosexuality. the 'brothers' reference is obviously a metaphor for a lack of passion in a marriage. using the word "sibling" wouldn't be as effective because siblings may show some affection, but the lyricist is highlighting a lack of affection between a couple that have been together for a long time.

the reference to "brothers" is obviously a metaphor for the lack of affection in a marriage. it makes perfect sense because use of the word "siblings" wouldn't be as effective because siblings can show some affection for each other. sorry to disappoint but there are no homosexual references here.
Either way | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/29/2008
I agree with most reviewers. Furthermore, I think it could either take the homosexual route or not. Aging could have a distancing effect in terms of intimacy. Homosexual or not. Either way, a lovely song.
yeah... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/11/2008
This isn't about homosexuality to me. It's about a man who is aging and has faded from his former glory days...but still sees that young man inside of himself. And, as his marriage's love was between this youthful man, it is lost in the couples old age...
So, naturally if you've ever seen two brothers in a hotel bed, they tend not to hold eachother in loving embraces...they go to either side of the bed and sleep as if there alone. And that's what his marriage has become. Distant and lonesome. Just like his life.
Awesome | Reviewer: Djuna | 5/24/2008
I think the "brothers on a hotel bed" part is referring to the "separate sides" line before. Have you ever been forced to share a bed with siblings? You always stray to the furthest part of your side.

I believe that this song is about an aging man and his wife, and how their relationship is weak and growing weaker, and could possibly be coming to a close. Near the end of the song, when it says "Cause now we say goodnight / From our own separate sides / Like brothers on a hotel bed," I believe means that the couple no longer embrace each other in bed, but rather sleep far apart, avoiding each other. If one has ever actually listened to the song or read the lyrics, he who realize that there is no way that this song could be about homosexual lovers.
