This song floored me the first time I heard it because of the incredible playing around with metre they are doing in the intro. Basically the guitars are playing in 7/8 and Bruce is singing in 4/4 and they all "land" together at the end of the verse. Just brilliant. The rest of the song continues in this genius vein. Not to mention what the song is actually about. These guys are completely inspired. I love them.

This has to be one of the single most intelligent songs I have heard about the stupidity of mankind, marrying both religion, war and science. The genius behind lies within the connection to one man; J. Robert Oppenheimer. He is known as the father of the atomic bomb and was a serious American political power. The title is derived from the Bhagavad Gita (a Hindu Scripture): "If the radiance of a thousand suns were to burst at once into the sky, that would be like the splendor of the mighty one" and after witnessing the test of a bomb, a second line from the scripture popped into his twisted mind "I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds."
The first nuclear weapons test (which involved an implosion design plutonium bomb)was known as "Trinity," hence the line "Unholy union, trinity reformed"
E=MC squared was the equation used in order to predict the amount of energy and explosive yield of the bombs.
The verses are very selfexplainitory, and I'm sure by reading them you will agree that this song paints a very good picture of what we have done. We are not the sons of God indeed, for how could we be if we made and used a weapon that has potential to destroy the earth and all of its denziens.
I just cant get these lyrics out of my head... like 90% of Iron Maidens songs, lol
But their war epics are among the best and this is no different

E=mc^2

E=energy, m=mass, c=speed of light

The equation describes the relationship between mass and energy, and conversion of mass to energy. Basically, your finger nail could level a city block if its energy could be harnessed.

The song is a reference to the detonation of the first atomic bomb. E=mc2 is Einstein's formula for his theory of relativity. The reference to Robert is of J Robert Oppenheimer, who led the Manhattan Project. The detonation of the bomb at the Trinity site had one person say, "it looked brighter than a thousand suns". The book of the same name is probably what led to the writing of the song! GREAT SONG, by the way!

Bruce never sung any better "until" powerslave? This was 22 years after powerslave. :P

This would probably be one of my favorite songs on the album if it wasn't so repetitive with the "Out of the darkness, brighter than a thousand suns" bits.
