In the past few years since the release of Bright Eyes’
fourth full-length album, Lifted or The Story Is In The
Soil, Keep Your Ear To The Ground, the Bright Eyes tale has
taken many unexpected twists and turns. Conor Oberst and
his ever-changing line up of musical comrades appeared on
“The Late Show with David Letterman,” “The Late Late Show
with Craig Kilborn,” and were a prominent addition to the
MTV2-televised 2003 Shortlist Awards. In October of 2004 he
was invited to join Bruce Springsteen and REM on an arena
tour of swing states in advance of the presidential
election. His performance at those shows sealed his
reputation as a creative force, able to command the
attention of thousands of rock fans with, at times, just
his voice and an acoustic guitar.

------ About the song Cleanse Song performed by Bright Eyes
wow so the person judging on the aspect that this is about drugs is clearly a retard.
you are right it isnt about DOING drugs, its about getting clean, "On a detox loft through a Glendale Park over sidewalk chalk
Someone wrote in red, "start over"
So I muffled my scream on an Oxnard beach
Full of fever dreams that scare you sober
Into saltless dinners"
detox? what does that mean hmm. yeah duh.
its about more than just getting clean from drugs though, its about getting a clean and healthy spirit, getting rid of things that trouble you and being free and pure.

I Think That This Song Really Is Truthful. When A Lot Of People Write About Their Loved Ones "Drug" Problems They Wwrite About How They Are Going To "Fix" That Person. This Song Really Brings Out The Reality And How You Cant Simply "Fix: Someone With A Drug Problem. It Doesnt Work. ThisIs A Very Simple, Inspirational Song.

------ About the song Something Vague performed by Bright Eyes
when this song came out my brother got it for me as a present. Now im 13, and this cd is still in my room. At 12 i did some chores to get more albums. Something Vague describes everything and everything about everything. This song was the first song i learned to play on my guitar(acoustic). i even preformed it at a talent contest. Connor and bright eyes are true artists

------ About the song Poison Oak performed by Bright Eyes
In Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood", the character was rescued from his jail cell by a Yellow Bird. Yellow Bird now stands for an allusion for someone's only hope. Maybe Conor Oberst saw Collin as his only hope, and with his suicide, Oberst was lost. That's my interpretation. I've been a devoted fan of Conor for many years. His music has saved me from myself.

------ About the song Poison Oak performed by Bright Eyes
This song is about my late friend, Collin, who took his life while we were working together at the soda fountain at the drugstore. Collin was an amazing spirit and he used to read to me and we'd play music together at my apartment in Dundee--we would bang on my piano until the guy living upstairs would come down and yell at us!. The day before his death he left a copy of his beloved book, "Wuthering Heights" on my coffee table. In the book was a note. It was a very sad note and I chose not to share it with anyone. Collin and I had a connection because we were addicts and suffered from severe depression. I wish he were still here. His death was one of the reasons why I had to get the fuck out of Omaha. I fled to the West Coast thinking I could beat my addictions and depression. The past 8 years have been a constant battle, but I am sober now, and I feel that Collin was with me to help me through my journey.
The song is about existentialism. It is about the search for meaning in life, and relinquishing all the things that hold you back, because if you do, you will find happiness in realizing you are insignificant. Most people fear death, which is illustrated in the song, but we do not have to think about the inevitable end. We can just live our lives and be happy realizing we are "no one"

------ About the song Pull My Hair performed by Bright Eyes
This just explains everything you want to say but can't...I know that feeling all too well, and it just really does explain a part of my life that I only wanted to feel the rythm of the song and not all the technicalites of a math problem. More like just go with the flow, not all problems have a solution, but the song whether it makes sense at all or not, leaves you listening. I adore connor and his lyrics, he could have my heart for one night and keep it!

------ About the song Bowl Of Oranges performed by Bright Eyes
First of all, "just a thought, you might not of wanted to but you kinda ripped that last sentence off of Gandi. HAHAHA. But what I wanted to say is that I enjoy bright eyes very much. They went from being the songs I listened to in the car, to being my comfort music. Conor Oberst's lyrics are very strong and have a way to intensify or emphasise your emotions. To me his sad songs always make me feel more comfident even though I feel the depression. and his happy songs, such as this one, have a happy feeling and a thought that every one is very selfish. Besides the point I just wanted to take this little writing to say that I love bright eyes because I noticed thast the mountain valley band doesnt have quite the same feel (not that they aren't good) and that bright eyes more of an impact.

------ About the song Lua performed by Bright Eyes
my interpretation is that he is singing to this girl that he loves, who is hasnt been through as much as he and is probably younger and is saying how hard life can be. how just because these drugs and pain allow you to escape from life, its really not worth it. and he understands her struggle, and the other guys shes been with have rejected her because she has such huge emotional problems they cant carry "so many men stronger than me have thrown their backs out trying to lift it". hes not saying "stop drugs" or "what you are doing is wrong" but is just telling her what she already knows and how he understands. "ive got a flask inside my pocket, we can share it on the train". hes not stopping her, because he knows it wont work, it never really works, people cant just stop someones life struggle, they have to decide to change themselves.
very deep and accurate song in relation to a lot of teen struggles nowadays. congrats conor, on being brilliant
What i think | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song Lua performed by Bright Eyes
I think anyone can relate to this song, whether its about drugs or not. Basically it talks about how something you do at night, in the morning may seemed like not such a good idea. Parts of this song also relate to everyday life.
However, this song i think is about a guy and a girl who are unsure of each others love, the girl is also unsure about herself. The guy thinks he knows the girl and what shes going through...
"I know that it is freezing, but I think we have to walk
I keep waving at the taxis, they keep turning their lights off
But Julie knows a party at some actor's West side loft
Supplies are endless in the evening by the morning they'll be gone"
Basically the guy and girl are leaving from wherever, and all the taxis aren't stopping for them, so the guy suggests on going to some party where all the supplies are endless, but by morning everything will be used up.
"When everything is lonely I can be my own best friend
I'll get a coffee and the paper, have my own conversations
with the sidewalk and the pigeons and my window reflection
The mask I polish in the evening by the morning looks like shit" Now he is talking about on days where he is lonley he can just sit in his apartment and reflect (this is why he mentions his reflections). And that something he thought that would be good at night, turned out looking like shit
"And I know you have a heavy heart, I can feel it when we kiss
So many men stronger than me have thrown their backs out trying to lift it
But me I'm not a gamble, you can count on me to split
The love I sell you in the evening by the morning won't exist"
He is talking about his girlfriend who he feels isn't happy, and that she is hiding something.
"You're looking skinny like a model with your eyes all painted black
Just keep going to the bathroom, always say you'll be right back
Well, it takes one to know one, kid, I think you've got it bad
But what's so easy in the evening by the morning's such a drag"
She has an eating disorder and she goes to the bathroom to throw up, He says she looks skinny like a model. And he's been through smething like that (but not as bad) and she thinks shes got it bad.
"I got a flask inside my pocket, we can share it on the train
And if you promise to stay conscious I will try and do the same
We might die from medication, but we sure killed all the pain
But what was normal in the evening by the morning seems insane"
they're gonna take drugs, to let go of the pain from there past insecurities... this is kinda like the circle of the day. In the morning they have insecurities (the girl with her weight) then by the end of the day they take drugs to forget about, and by the next day they dont feel good again.
"And I'm not sure what the trouble was that started all of this
The reasons all have run away, but the feeling never did
It's not something I would recommend, but it is one way to live
Cause what is simple in the moonlight by the morning never is"
Hes not sure what started this cycle of theirs.
Its not a good way to live, but its one way.
Metaphor | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song Lua performed by Bright Eyes
This song could be thought of as a metaphor for our addiction to the material world and our self-images and our rejection of love. Night is a time of self-hate, ego, selfish feelings. Day is knowing the truth. What we do in the night time by day "looks like shit"-- whether it be wearing masks, being "complicated", or taking the "drugs" of the material world, what we do when we are not "conscious" is a violation of what we know to be right and true. This man is talking to his true love.
By another token, this is a song about a man who's found his true love but can't bring himself around to believing in it. This interpretation doesn't hold up for as many of the lyrics but I still like it.

------ About the song Lua performed by Bright Eyes
my class and I really scrutinized this song and we got the interpretation that the singer is seeing how a girl is going through a really hard time and she's beating up her body (being bulimic, drugs, alcohol, sex, etc) and the singer himself has gone through something similar (referring to the line "it takes one to know one kid") and although he's not 100% out of the dark of his time yet, he understands the struggle and wants to help this girl before she gets way too bad or kills herself from drugs and alcohol, etc. ("We might die from medication, but we sure killed all the pain")
i think it's beautifully written although the message is very heavy. the melody and the way it's written helps to kind of cushion the message but it still comes across strong.
to have any bright eyes song on the radio is amazing, but to have one of his very unknown ones...well that's a miracle.
kay i love this song, its quite different from others he's done but i still like it.
A bit Juno actually.

------ About the song Cleanse Song performed by Bright Eyes
It seems to me to be about cleansing in a more general sense.
"Of a millstone house in a seaside town
When your heart gave out in a mission bed
So your wife gave birth to a funeral dirge
You woke up purged as a wailing infant
In Krug Thep, Thailand"
"And if life seems absurd what you need is some laughter"
These quotes seem to have little to do with drug addiction, that's just another example in the song of a person who is attemption to cleanse themselves. It's about the notion that no matter where you are, you can always begin aknew. It's also about perspective, about realizing that even though you've become so wrapped in in what you've become, that in the grand scheme of things these don't mean very much:
Hear the chimes, did you know that the wind when it blows
It is older than Rome and our joy and our sorrow

------ About the song First Day Of My Life performed by Bright Eyes
I love this song. Its just fantastic. And completley real. Its just real. I cant help but relate to this..
My friend/Ex boyfriend ment everything to me. I never told him that either. Well, we were so cool last year then he changed. He started doing all these different kinda drugs. He became all the things i hate. And he wasnt the same person i knew. Then he dropped out of school. And i cried every single night after he did that. He started selling drugs out on the street. I miss him. I couldnt stand it. I knew that the one person i believed in more than anything, was gone. I was the one person who actually gave a fuck about him. I cared more than i cared about anything else. Everyone at school and in his life, litterally hated him. He was a jackass. He talked too much shit, and he even said a few things about me aswell. I dont know what to do. I MISS HIM. I just wanna save him.... Kinda like he saved me once...
