Brick By Boring Brick Lyrics - Paramore

Review The Song (17)

She lives in a fairy tale
Somewhere too far for us to find
Forgotten the taste and smell
Of the world that she's left behind
It's all about the exposure the lens yes I told her
The angles were all wrong now
She's ripping wings off of butterflies

Keep your feet on the ground
When your head's in the clouds

Well go get your shovel
And we'll dig a deep hole
To bury the castle, bury the castle x2
Ba da ba da ba

So one day he found her crying
Coiled up on the dirty ground
Her prince finally came to save her
sponsored links
And the rest you can figure out
But it was a trick
And the clock struck 12
Well make sure to build your house brick by boring brick
or the wolf's gonna blow it down

Keep your feet on the ground
When your head's in the clouds

Well go get your shovel
And we'll dig a deep hole
To bury the castle, bury the castle x2

woah woah

Well you built up a world of magic
Because your real life is tragic
Yeah you built up a world of magic
If it's not real
You can't hold it in your hand
You can't feel it with your heart
And I won't believe it
But if it's true
You can see it with your eyes or
Even in the dark
And that's where I want to be, yeah

Go get your shovel
We'll dig a deep hole
To bury the castle, bury the castle x2
Ba da ba da ba...

Butterflies | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/3/12

Anyone ever heard of The Butterfly Project? It's been on Paramore's forum before...

THE RULES:
1. when you feel like you want to cut, take a marker or pen and draw a butterfly on wherever the self-harm occurs.
2. name the butterfly after a loved one, or someone that really wants you to get better.
3. NO scrubbing the butterfly off.
4. if you cut before the butterfly is gone, it dies. if you don't cut, it lives.
5. if you have more than one, cutting kills them all.
6. another person may draw them on you. these butterflies are extra special. take good care of them.
7. even if you don’t cut, feel free to draw a butterfly anyways, to show your support. if you do this, name it after someone you know that is suffering right now, and tell them. it could help.

That's just what came to mind when I heard "she's ripping the wings off of butterflies." I could be wrong.

"She lives in a fairytale, somewhere too far for us to find" this song talks about a girl slipping into delusion and insanity to escape from her life.

"he found her crying, coiled up on the dirty ground" i think going through betrayal, loneliness, abuse, etc., one day she collasped in sadness. The "prince that came to save her" is her delusion and fantasy, as her only way out of her problems.

"forgotten the taste and smell of the world she's left behind" she slips further out of touch with the world and those who care about her.

The point of view of person singing is desparately trying to save her and connect with her. the writer tries to reason with the girl, "if it's not real you can't hold it in your hands, you can't feel it with your heart."

the conflict in the story is between the real world that is harsh and filled with pain, and the too good to be true "perfect" fantasy. Reality, while stark and cruel, has real joy and love in it, and it's worth fighting for. The world of her delusion is superficially happy and free of pain and sadness, but is truly monotonous and empty. It's hard to pull the girl back to the painful reality of her life, especially because it means she will have to face her pain and heartbreak.

"build your home brick by boring brick or the wolf's gonna blow it down." invest your time and heart in real relationships and purpose, because investing in something that provides temporary happiness but is actually empty and untrue will leave you more broken and empty when it collapses.

"get your shovel and we'll dig a deep hole, to bury the castle."
The writer tries to get the girl to cooperate with her. she tries to convince the girl to work with the people who want to help her, to seperate herself from her insanity and bring her back to reality, instead of letting her slip further into herself.

"If it's true, you can see it with your eyes, even in the dark. And that's where i want to be."

I think this also applies to us trying to avoid the harsh reality of life by focusing on empty things that provide temporary happiness, such as drugs, getting drunk, pornography, cutting, etc., that ultimately leave us empty and broken. I think the point is to "build our houses brick by boring brick", to work through reality, although progress and fufillment is very slow, and invest in real relationships and purpose, although it is much harder work and is painful, it is rewarding in the end, unlike "happy" escapes. It's a hard choice to make.

That's what this song means to me.

Wrong Lyrics but one of the most amazing songs in the world | Reviewer: Dominique | 9/10/10

Amazing song but you have some of the lyrics wrong. You have "Ba da ba da ba" it's accually "Ba da ba ba da ba ba da"
You have "And the rest you can figure out" it's accually "And the rest she can figure out"
You have "And the clock struck 12" it's accually "And a clock struck 12"
I absolutly love this song! It's the most played on my iPod. I think the main theme is that you can't escape the real world. Hailey's parents are divorsed and so are mine so I understand the feeling of wanting to create your own happy ending were everything is perfect, but that will never happen. In the music video Paramore gives the impression that behind all the magic and fairytales the real world is waiting for you and it's not always pretty. When Hailey says "and we'll bury the castle" that may imply that you have to let go of your fairytale and deal with the truth. To let go of the past and start building up your future. Not to lingure on the past and all the tragity involved with it. It's an amazing song with a very deep message. This song made me fall in love with Paramore even more once their second album came out. I can't get enough of it. Parmore is my all time favorite band and will always be all time favorite band! I love you ♥Paramore♥

i think this song is one of the best of this album although i do think that some of the older songs, incuding Misery Business and CrushCrushCrush, are just as good or even better. And of course this has nothing to do with the song but, Hailey i thought your hair looked awesome red. it looks better than the blonde because it makes you look more aggressive and outgoing. just my opinion, after all its your life...anyways, long story short, i like this song a lot its a great song and it is one of your best. by the way my name is Mystery(stagename) and i am trying to get out into the music business so if you are reading this please check out my youtube channel (its called ifyoucouldbeavampire) and my myspace page(search me through my email mysterypurple@gmail.com) and please leave a comment or a friend request. thank you. i will soon have some videos of songs up and running!

My opinion of the song | Reviewer: Miyu | 3/31/10

I think it's reflecting about being heartbroken and possibly her wanting her "innocence" back. hence the little girl that is similar to her. and the lyrics "
So one day he found her crying
Coiled up on the dirty ground
Her prince finally came to save her
And the rest you can figure out
But it was a trick
And the clock struck 12"
that the fantasy for her living happily ever after with the guys she loved is not want she thought and everything was a lie

;( | Reviewer: werewilldthingsare@hotmail.com | 3/14/10

i allways thought the song was about the singer. almost everyone knows that her parents are devorsed, so pretty much i thought she was trying to live in a fairy tale world but in the end everything comes back to her and she learns that no matter how hard she tries nothngs going to change
(thats my point of view of this song ____my parents are dvorsed to but ive learned how to accept the fact that they hate echother

and just to say paramore is my favorite band , i can relate to almost all of their songs from personal experiance
i love the band so much i dont kno what i would have done if that band wasnt there when i was sad

What the video means... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/8/10

I think the videp is about a girl living in a fairytale. She thinks she going to have a "Happy Ending" ,but she's not because when she goes into the castle, she discovers the ugly truth about everey fairytale. So she gets afraid of whats going to happen to her 'cause she's living in one. So at the end, she dies. Not a happy ending...

Ba da baaaaaaa... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/8/10

Well I think what she's trying to tell the little girl is that she needs to see the world as it is. That is why she is trying to convince her to throw away her dream (bury the castle) and leave it be. She tries to convince her because her real life is tragic, so she builds up a world of magic. And it's not real so she can't hold it in her hands nor can she feel it with her heart.

omg i love this song. it also reminds me so much of a poem by some man. its called the stolen child. im so gonna worship paramore for this song and since its soo good im gonna use it for an english project!!!!!!!!! Rock on hun!! I LOVE PARAMORE!!!!!!!

My opinion | Reviewer: alexx | 11/24/09

i really just think it's about a girl who's living in a fantasy instead of facing the real world because everything in her real life has gone wrong, hence the quote, "well you built up a world of magic, because your real life is tragic."
And it's like the person who's talking about her is showing her that if you just find that right person in life then real life is a lot better than a fantasy land, as she says if its not real then you can't feel it in your heart, but if its TRUE then you can see it as clearly as possible and not just in your head.
She's trying to convince the girl to throw her fantasy away, "go get your shovel, and we'll dig a deep hole to bury the caslte."
And also when she says, "Keep your feet on the ground, while your heads in the clouds." Don't lose yourself while your dreaming and don't let it get out of hand.
But to 'Bob' I do agree with you about the butterfly thing. It's like she's ripped up her innocence and all her hope (as butterflies also represent hope) and now she's got nothing left but her fairytale.
Well done Paramore =D (Y)

What does it mean? | Reviewer: Bob | 10/31/09

Seems to be a story about a girl being betrayed and learning to defend herself. The story appears to start in verse 3 and verse 1 is more of a summary of the whole song. She's ripping butterflies wings etc may be a reference to the fragility of innocence and the anger directed at herself after being betrayed, possibly in a sexual realtionship ( since the reference to the wolf, which is traditionally a male sexual image). However the metaphor is mixed in some ways: the wolf of red riding hood would match the betrayal, but them there is the prince of cinderalla, the moment when her dreams should have come true, the clock struck twelve and see saw the situation clearly instead. Then the image of the wolf changes again, it's added to the 3 little pigs wolf now and joins the story of building a house brick by boring brick. As the story goes the brick house was unable to be brought down the by huffing and puffing, which couls mean the "sweet nothings" of a young romance or even the huffing and puffing of a sexual relationship. So the girl learns, tears the last pieces of fragility away to protect herself and begins to build a stronger mental defence against he betrayals of the world - brick by boring brick - since she clearly isn't enjoying the experience.
