Bowl Of Oranges Lyrics - Bright Eyes

Review The Song (30)

The rain, it started tapping on the window near my bed. There was a loophole in my dreaming,
so I got out of it. And to my surprise my eyes were wide and already open.
Just my nightstand and my dresser where those nightmares had just been.
So I dressed myself and left then, out into the gray streets.
But everything seemed different and completely new to me.
The sky, the trees, houses, buildings, even my own body.
And each person I encountered, I couldn't wait to meet.
I came upon a doctor who appeared in quite poor health.
I said "{I am terribly sorry but} there is nothing I can do for you
{that} you can't do for yourself."
He said "Oh yes you can. Just hold my hand. I think that would help."
So I sat with him a while and then I asked him how he felt.
He said, "I think I'm cured. No, in fact, I'm sure.
Thank you Stranger, for your therapeutic smile."
So that is how I learned the lesson that everyone is alone.
And your eyes must do some raining if you are ever going to grow.
But when crying don't help and you can't compose yourself.
It is best to compose a poem, an honest verse of longing or simple song of hope.
That is why I'm singing...
Baby don't worry cause now I got your back. And every time you feel like crying,
I'm gonna try and make you laugh. And if I can't, if it just hurts too bad,
then we will wait for it to pass and I will keep you company
through those days so long and black.
And we'll keep working on the problem we know we'll never solve
Of Love's uneven remainders, our lives are fractions of a whole.
But if the world could remain within a frame like a painting on a wall.
Then I think we would see the beauty.
Then we would stand staring in awe at our still lives posed like a bowl of oranges,
like a story told by the fault lines and the soil.

still lives posed | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/7/11

This is a happy song!!!! (yes,it is)....ultimately dealing with the sad view of life in motion. 4 me the title says it all (reinforced by the last 2 lines)...sometimes life can seem pretty hectic but it's also like that picture of a bowl of oranges in your kitchen...just a simple glimpse of a 'fraction' or part of our lives. an excerpt sort of. that BE is profusely fighting for the safekeeping of love/happiness for the person in the song means that its worth the fight. but he clarifies this great (and i think thwarted) assertion by ending with the fact that we are all broken...we have hurt within us.we are torn...and irrevocably so..
but we live for those moments were happiness,or the vague idea of it, is contained in a still frame

Some stuff along the same (sort of, although not really) lines as Bright Eyes are.. antony and the johnsons, the tallest man on earth, bon iver, death cab for cutie, iron and wine, sufjan stevens, nick drake, jeff and tim buckley, kings of convenience, sigur ros, the national. should be enough to get started with!

nothing compares | Reviewer: killphilistines | 5/16/11

I don't know what it is but there's something about Bright Eyes that no other band has, and I can't quite put my finger on it. I haven't come across any other artist–except for Elliott Smith–that has the ability to move me like Conor does. I almost wish I never started listening to Bright Eyes cause now I feel like everything out there sucks cause they don't even compare to Bright Eyes, LOL. I know that sounds ridiculous but it's true. Does anyone know of any other bands out there that rivals the beauty and magnificence of Bright Eyes? If so, please share.

This song is beautiful. Everything Bright Eyes does is insanely beautiful. I want to meet Conor Oberst one day to thank him for opening me up to this world of hope and understanding he brings me. This isn't music I listen to when I'm in a certain mood; it's music I listen to all the time. Not to mention he's incredibly beautiful himself.

This song isn't easy to listen to because it leaves me with such an empty broken feeling. the lyrics are happy because he is writing "an honest verse of longing or a simple verse of hope." It is the only way for him to cope with his lonliness as he tries as hard as he possibly can to solve the problem that will never be solved. "Love's uneven remainder." He loves this person so much but they just don't love him back. His life has become a fraction of a whole and there's nothing he can do to fix it. Anyway that's what I get from the song.

Conor reaches into my emotional depths deeper than anyone else. It's brilliant

Just a point. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/22/09

First of all, "just a thought, you might not of wanted to but you kinda ripped that last sentence off of Gandi. HAHAHA. But what I wanted to say is that I enjoy bright eyes very much. They went from being the songs I listened to in the car, to being my comfort music. Conor Oberst's lyrics are very strong and have a way to intensify or emphasise your emotions. To me his sad songs always make me feel more comfident even though I feel the depression. and his happy songs, such as this one, have a happy feeling and a thought that every one is very selfish. Besides the point I just wanted to take this little writing to say that I love bright eyes because I noticed thast the mountain valley band doesnt have quite the same feel (not that they aren't good) and that bright eyes more of an impact.

Bright Eyes has this way of capturing real emotions and twisting them into lyrics. I enjoy listening to their songs because they're packed with true feeling.

I love this little bit:

"And every time you feel like crying, I'm gonna try and make you laugh. And if I can't, if it just hurts too bad, then we will wait for it to pass and I will keep you company through those days so long and black."

such a beautiful thought, being there for the ones you love.

Just a thought. | Reviewer: Natty | 7/22/09

Bright Eyes is, well, my favorite band ever.
Simply because the lyrics are not the norm, almost like... organized chaos. In a sense.
By that, I mean some people tend to think of the lyrics as long and annoying and "creepy."

one thing I have noticed about Bright Eyes, is the vast majority of the endings of his songs are optimistic.
Like they're showing up the listening the possibilities.
What could be, in the end.
But along with that also the truth of the moment, the hardships before the happy ending.
In essence; the organization of the chaos.

This song follows that pattern as well.

There are the nightmares, a common subject in his songs.
But then there is the epiphany.
The realization that all you need to do to make a difference in someone's life is simply be their friend.
I found that people have the tendency to lose faith in humanity when they feel that humanity has abandoned them.
But if you just take the time to show that you care, and not abandon them if it doesn't work right away, you can make a difference in someone's life.
Like being the change that you want to see.

In my opinion, at least.

I always just listened to this and didnt think about it, but loved it. Now that i read the lyrics it is very meaningful and deep. I only get bits and cant truly figure out the whole meaning, but the bits are still influential
It is also a wonderful song

I don't think I've ever listened to a Bright Eyes song that I didn't like. Conor's lyrics are so deep, heart breaking, and beautiful. I can listen to Bright Eyes in any mood I'm in. This song however is one of my absolute favorites. I love Bright Eyes with all my heart and soul. It's one of the few bands that has any originality left.
