i concur with most of what is being said.. but noone has mentioned the actual MUSICAL composition of the song which is excellent... and like the other contributer said here.. it is soooo catchy - a great sign of a great pop song, and pop songs have the same validity as great rock'n'roll (we all love "POPular Culture" in all it's forms after all. Be it Beatles, Stones, Pollock, Warhol, and yes, in their own way the Spice Girls!!!)lol

So, it's thumbs up for this most excellent of music, and great lyrics.

it's a guy. he's hitting on another guy. they are both guys. the tune's catchy 'cause it's yer dad's music - like the Stones, but these guys bring more to the table - a contemporary cultural twist on the music and the relationship theme.

Well, the lyricists are clearly having fun, but I think that while the narrator / character is BSing, I think the two characters may be on to a great thing. Kind of like the characters in "life in the fastlane".

I don't like the reviewers who make the woman just sound like a stupid victim -- she's also jacking the guy around with her "ex", they all know and no one cares. Very realistic / well observed.

I agree with Olivia. Clearly this song is sarcastic and even cynical in my opinion. It is juste a story about an arrogant guy who looks cool and make a girl believe he's "like her" while obviously he doesn't give a crap about her.

We Used to Be Friends is a track on the album "Welcome to the Monkey House" which was released in 2003, meaning We Used to Be Friends is in no way a 'new' song.

The song is (clearly) about trying to be unique, all the while acting and doing what millions of other "bohemians" do and being exactly like them. So basically the song is about being fake, mundane and predictable.
