Black Velvet Lyrics - Alannah Myles

Review The Song (11)

Mississippi in the middle of a dry spell

Jimmy Rogers [JIMMIE RODGERS] on the victrola up high

Mama's dancing with baby on her shoulder

The Sun is setting like molasses in the sky.

The boy could sing, knew how to move, everything.

Always wanting more, he'd leave you longing for.

CHORUS:

Black velvet and that little boy smile

Black velvet with that slow southern style

A new religion that'll bring you to your knees

Black velvet if you please.

Up in Memphis the music's like a heat wave

White lightning, bound to drive you wild.

Mama's baby's in the heart of every school girl

"Love me tender" leaves 'em cryin' in the aisle

The way he moved, it was a sin, so sweet and true.

Every word of every song that he sang was for you.

In a flash he was gone, it happened so soon,

What could you do?
CHORUS:

Black velvet and that little boy smile

Black velvet with that slow southern style

A new religion that'll bring you to your knees

Black velvet if you please.

Black velvet and that little boy smile

Black velvet with that slow southern style

Black velvet if you please.
If you please

If you please

THE very first time i heard this song,my whole body was covered in Goosebumps,it was a better feeling than a orgasm, yet you wanted more,so you repeated the song and turn it up LOUD for another time,The drum beat was a added part to the goosebumps,it's a good song for the Misionary postion, cos of the rocking back and fro movement by the drums,TRY it..

Elvis is the boy in the song | Reviewer: Lynne | 9/30/09

See Wiki article about the song. His mother is holding him in the beginning, and yes, he was born in Mississippi. Jimmie Rodgers is the correct spelling of the name of the country singer Gladys is listening to on the Victrola. :)

Great!!!! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/2/09

This is one of my favorites. It's about A southern boy and his charms. I lived in TN. for 2 years, and I'm still a southern girl. (The accent come out when I get mad, when I'm in a hurry, and when I say Tennessee, it's there.)

Elvis and Black Velvet | Reviewer: katherine | 2/11/08

I do agree with Natasha and Marina. It is about Elvis. He was originally from Tupelo Mississippi and later on came Memphis Tennessee. :) If I'm not mistaken I think a pet name for his mom was "velvet." Others have tried to sing this song but Alannah's is the best.

I adore this song, she (Alannah) has such a great voice.I agree with Marina about it being about Elvis, for all of her points plus the fact "love me tender" is namechecked and he lived in Memphis (his Graceland home) which is also mentioned, plus I'm pretty sure he came from Mississippi :)

Anyway,Elvis aside,this is an amazing song :)

When I've heard "Black Velvet" on the way back in the late 80's since I was about six | Reviewer: Alyssa | 6/12/07

I think "Black Velvet" is a pretty good song by the canadian rock female singer Alannah Myles, I guess Alannah Myles is a great singer and she's got a great voice, Her voice is very smooth and beautiful, When I've heard that song on the way in the late 80's since I was about six.

Elvis perhaps? | Reviewer: Marina 13 from Germany | 4/9/07

Ithink this song is about Elvis.
He could dance, girls were crying and his death happend to soon. That makes sense to me.
Don't ya think???
