Black Throated Wind Lyrics - Grateful Dead

Review The Song (4)

You're bringing me down, I'm running aground,
Blind in the lights of the interstate cars,
Passing me by, the busses and the semis,
Plunging like stones from a slingshot from mars.

But I'm here on the road, bound to the load,
That I picked up in ten thousand cafes and bars.
Alone with the rush of the drivers that won't pick me up,
The highway, the moon, and clouds and the stars.

Black throated wind, keeps on pourin' in,
With it's words of a life where nothing is new,
Ah, mother American night, I pass from the light,
Ah, I'm drownin' in you.

I left St. Louie, city of blues,
In the midst of a storm I'd rather forget.
I tried to pretend it came to an end,
Cause you weren't the women I once thought I'd met.

But I can't deny, times have gone by,
Well I never had doubts or thoughts of regret,
And I was a man when all this began,
Who wouldn't think twice about being there yet.

Black throated wind, whisper in sin,
And speaking on life that passes like dew.
It's forced me to see you've done better by me,
Better by me that I've done by you.

Now what's to be found by racing around,
you carry your pain wherever you go,
Full of blues, and tryin' to lose,
You ain't gonna learn what you don't wanna know.

So I give you my eyes and all of their lies,
Please help them to learn as well as to see.
Capture a glance, and make it dance,
But looking at you is looking at me.

Black throated wind, keeps on pourin' in,
With it's words of a life that could almost be true,
Ah, mother American night, here comes a light.
I'm turning around, that's what I'm gonna do.

Going back home that's what I'm gonna do.
I'm turning around, that's what I'm gonna do.
Going back home that's what I'm gonna do.
Cause you've done better by me than I've done by you,
I'm drowning in you.

what it means to me | Reviewer: benwah | 5/18/12

BTW to me is a song about love lost and self reflection. All of us while becoming an adult reach a point where we are completely on our own and realize who we are. BTW hit me the first time while traveling across country at 28 in the middle of a breakup with my girlfriend of 7 years. It helped me piece together who I was and how I came to terms with my place in not only my relationship with her but with the world. It helped me realize that trying to please others is pointless if you can't be content with yourself. The most important lyric for me is "looking at you is looking at me". To me that meant learn what makes you happy before trying to make others happy. Happiness is a decision we all have to make, not force on others. My life has been better ever since. Thanks to the good ol' grateful dead to put things in perspective.

A song from the wild heart | Reviewer: Mark Grindell | 6/16/11

I first heard this on "Steal your face", and at first it didn't make much sense; I was 16 and still really a boy. I grew up in the following years. My Dad had got me a rucksack for my 17th birthday, and there you go, I was away and gone; I spent the next years travelling all over the place. I went to school in Calder High, Mytholmroyd, and was supposed to be a quiet, shy kid, but in reality I got to Plymouth one rainy weekend and spent the night under the stars, watching ships dock and undock; spent one crazy Sunday getting back by Bristol, finally landing in Yorkshire late that night back to my folks, a bit worried about where I had been. And this is how I grew up over those years. And now this song makes perfect sense; it's telling a true story about that thing that you feel late at night, scared that you might not get home and thrilled that you might not even now where you are going to sleep that night. There are times when I think that there is no finer way to grow up to be a man.

heartfelt | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/6/08

as a lifelong dead fan, i still wait for a song which i can say is more heartfelt than BTW. bobbie gives everything he s got into this one. earlier today on channel 32 sirius, i was fortunate enough to hear BTW twice. dylanish in its lyrical progrssion. BTW, never fails at bringing out a certain desperation we have all felt. when all else fails, weir concludes-"going back home thats what i am goin do" sometimes we all feel like thats all we CAN do. "i am drowning in you" another familar metaphor for those of us that have been through a desperate relationship. oh yes,BTW will always take me to a familiar place in my head and heart. keep on keeping on bobbie. and GOD BLESS THE GRATEFUL DEAD.
